EVALUATION OF FOUR-WHEEL-STEERING SYSTEM FROM THE VIEWPOINT OF LANE-KEEPING CONTROL

  • This paper evaluates the effectiveness of four-wheel-steering system from the viewpoint of lane-keeping control theory. In this paper, the lane-keeping control system is designed on the basis of the four-wheel-steering automobiles whose desired steering response is realized with the application of model matching control. Two types of desired steering responses are presented in this paper. One is zero-sideslip response, the other one is steering response which realizes zero-phase-delay of lateral acceleration. Using simplified linear two degree-of-freedom bicycle model, simulation study and theoretical analysis are conducted to evaluate the lane-keeping control performance of active four-wheel-steering automobiles which have different desired steering responses. Finally, the evaluation is conducted on straight and curved roadway tracking maneuvers.

  • Open-loop position estimation methods are commonly used in mobile robot applications. Their strength lies in the speed and simplicity with which an estimated position is determined. However, these methods can lead to inaccurate or unreliable estimates. Two position estimation methods are developed in this paper, one using a single optical flow sensor and a second using two optical sensors. The first method can accurately estimate position under ideal conditions and also when wheel slip perpendicular to the axis of the wheel occurs. The second method can accurately estimate position even when wheel slip parallel to the axis of the wheel occurs. Location of the sensors is investigated in order to minimize errors caused by inaccurate sensor readings. Finally, a method is implemented and tested using a potential field based navigation scheme. Estimates of position were found to be as accurate as dead-reckoning in ideal conditions and much more accurate in cases where wheel slip occurs.

  • The growing concern surrounding rollover incidences and consequences of Sports Utility Vehicles(SUV) have prompted to investigate the sensitivity of critical vehicle parameters on rollover. In this paper, dynamic rollover simulation of Sports Utility Vehicles is carried out using a validated nonlinear vehicle model in Matlab/Simulink. A standard model is considered and critical vehicle parameters like CG height, track width and wheel base are varied within chosen specified limits to study its influence on roll behavior during a Fishhook steering maneuver. A roll stability criterion based on Two Wheel Lift Off(TWLO) phenomenon is adopted for rollover propensity prediction. Further dynamic rollover characteristics of the vehicle are correlated with Static Stability Factor(SSF), Roll Stability Factor(RSF) and Two Wheel Lift Off Velocity(TWLV). These findings will be of immense help to SUV chassis designers to determine safety limits of critical vehicle parameters and minimize rollover incidences.

  • Stress distribution under a driving lugged wheel was obtained by photoelastic method. The distribution showed two distinct parts, one part is due to sinkage and other due to compression. Results of the study are summarized as follows. 1. The tangential reactions of sinkage as well as compressing parts were directly proportional to tangential load to the driving wheel, that's appeared to be thrust of the driving wheel. The normal reactions of both sinkage and compressing parts were directly proportional to the vertical load to the driving wheel, that's appeared to be resistance against wheel motion. 2. When the tangential load was constant, changing the vertical load did not show any significant thrust variation of the driving wheel. 3. Under the condition of this experiment, the ratio of vertical load to tangential load (T.L/V.L) must be greater than 1.0 in order for the wheel to roll.

  • The working tactor of this study, an agriculture machine, is consisted of 4 wheel driving system with gear trains and 4-type wheel steering system. Since technological regions for 4 wheel driving system and 4-type wheel steering system are some large, we divide on two studies on 4 wheel driving system and 4-type wheel steering system This study develops transmission and axle that are very important units for strong working operation because the power of tractor is largely affected by transmission and axle. Even if the development of the power train is some common technology, it is very complicated work and needs many experience know-hows. So, for new given specifications fitted to the working tractor, a kind of new agriculture machine, this study haws out processes that are development of assembly drawing and strength analysis through classical method and CAE software for all internal parts and housing cases.

A Study on the Contact Behavior of Stress-Displacement Characteristics for an Inclined Rail-Wheel Contact Mode (레일-휠의 접촉면 경사도에 따른 응력-변위량의 거동특성에 관한 연구)

  • Using the finite element method, rail-wheel contact model has been analyzed for mechanical loads due to passengers and payload of the train. This paper presents an investigation on how tapered wheel and inclined rail surfaces affect the contact stress and displacement of rail-wheel contacting surface under mechanical loads. For a numerical analysis, the tapered faces of the wheel are considered as 2.5% and 5.5%. And two models of the tilted rail are also considered as 40:1 and 20:1 at the bottom of the rail. The computed results based on the contact stress and displacement FE analysis indicate that the tilting ratio of the rail, 20:1 with a tapered face of the wheel, 2.5% may be more stable compared to that of 40:1 tilting model and 5.5% tapered wheel face.

  • In this paper, we establish an analysis algorithm and a design procedure for a Vane-Wheel which is a freely rotating device behind a propeller, by using a panel method. Vane-Wheel's function is to extract energy from the propeller slipstream in turbine part which is inner part of the Vane-Wheel, and convert this energy into an additional propulsive thrust in propeller part which is outer part of the Vane-Wheel. Two parts must satisfy torque balance and thrust has to act to the ship's forward direction. A Vane-Wheel has large interaction effect with propeller since it is placed behind of the propeller. Therefore, in order to consider interaction effect correctly, incoming velocity to the Vane-Wheel in a circumferential mean wake was calculated considering induced velocity from propeller to the Vane-Wheel. Likewise, incoming velocity to the propeller was calculated considering induced velocity from the Vane-Wheel to the propeller. This process is repeated until a converged result is obtained.

  • Wheelset dynamic analysis is a key element to determine the degree of accuracy of railway vehicle dynamics. In this study, a three-dimensional wheelset dynamic analysis is presented in such a way that the precise wheel-rail contact analysis in three-dimension is implemented into the dynamic equations of a wheelset. A numerical procedure that can be used for the analysis of a wheelset dynamics when the wheel-rail two point contact occurs in a cornering maneuver is developed. Numerical solutions of the constraint equations and the dynamics equations of a wheelset are achieved by using Runge-Kutta method. The proposed wheelset dynamic analysis is validated by comparison against results obtained from VI-RAIL analysis.

A Study on Brake Gain Adaptive Wheel Slip Control (브레이크 게인 적응 휠 슬립 제어에 관한 연구)

  • The brake gain adaptive wheel slip controller for a vehicle is designed in this paper. The brake gain from braking pressure to braking torque defined by friction coefficient, friction area and effective friction radius is estimated by the adaptive law based on the wheel slip dynamics. And the wheel slip controller is designed based on the estimated brake gain. The robustness of the designed controller is analyzed using Lyapunov function and the convergence of brake gain is verified. Proposed wheel slip controller is verified via CarSim simulation with two kinds of desired wheel slip ratio.

Dynamic Anlaysis of High Mobility Tracked Vehicles (고속주행용 궤도차량의 동적해석)

  • In this study, modeling and analysis procedure for the dynamic analysis of a high mobility tracked vehicle system were studied. The vehicle model used in this investigation is assumed to be consist of two kinematically decoupled subsystems. The chassis subsystem consists of chassis frame, sprocket, support rollers, road wheels, idler wheel, road wheel arms and idle wheel arm, while the track subsystem is represented as a closed kinematic chain consisting of track links and end connectors interconnected by revolute joints with bushing. Nonlinear contact force module describing the interaction between track link, and sprocket, idler wheel, road wheel, support roller, ground was used. The effects of road wheel arms and idler wheel arm due to tension adjuster are also considered.
