In general, the stress is concentrated on the pillar of very near parallel tunnel (VNPT), and the pillar has been reinforced by using steel-wires to maintain the stability of the tunnel. However, since the strength of the pillar decreases in the soil layer, the reinforcing pillar with the steel-wires is insufficient for tunnel stability. In this study, the laboratory tunnel experiment was conducted to examine the reinforcement effect for a new method, of which the pillar of VNPT is strengthened by using steel-pipes. As a result, against overburden stress, the bearing capacity of the steel-pipe reinforcement was 22% greater than that of the steel-wire reinforcement. In using the Particle Image Velocimetry method, the analysis shows that the steel-pipe reinforcement forms a more favorable condition of which uniformly the overburden load acts on the VNPT and the pillar than the steel-wire reinforcement. Based on the results, the steel-pipe reinforcement is expected to bring a more positive effect on tunnel stability than the steel-wire reinforcement.

Recently, twin-tunnel is often designed considering the aspects of disaster prevention and economic reasons. However, the design cases and the studies are relatively insufficient. By the twin-tunnel excavation, deviate stresses of pillar between tunnels are increased and the increased stresses induce the instability of the twin-tunnel. In this study, numerical analyses about the twin-tunnel behaviour are conducted while varying ground strength, width of pillar and depth of earth cover and a series of regression analyses are carried out by using the results of numerical analyses for the twin-tunnel. Based on the numerical analyses, an estimation method of derived stresses is suggested though the regression analyses. Also, based on the results of regression analyses, an quantitative estimation method considering the reinforcement effects is also suggested. Then various parametric studies are conducted to be considered the reinforcement type and various design parameters. Finally, the efficiency of the suggested method is verified through the results of parametric studies.

With the concentration of the population in the city center and the saturation of the structures on the ground, the development of the underground structures becomes important and the construction of an adjoining tunnel that can reduce the overall problems is respected. In addition, it is necessary to apply the reinforcement construction method for the pillar part of the adjacent tunnel that can secure stability, economy and workability of the site. In this study, the tunnel pillar reinforcement method using prestress and grouting was reviewed. There are various reinforcement methods that can compensate for the problems of the side tunnel, but as the tunnel pillar construction method using prestress and grouting is judged to be excellent in field applicability, stability and economic feasibility, theoretical and numerical analysis of the actual behavior mechanism are conducted. Numerical analysis is divided into PC stranded wire + steel pipe reinforcement grouting + prestress (Case 1), pillar part tie bolt reinforcement (Case 2), pillar part non-reinforcement (Case 3) under the same ground conditions, and the maximum value of the celling displacement, internal displacement, and member force, the stability was confirmed. Through numerical analysis, it was confirmed that Case 1 which reinforced the PC stranded wire, was the best construction method and if it is verified and supplemented through field experiments later, it will be possible to derive superior results in terms of displacement control and member force than the currently applied reinforcement method was judged.

Due to the concentration of population in the city center, the aboveground structures are saturated, and the development of underground structures becomes important. In addition, it is necessary to apply the reinforcement construction method for the pillar part of the adjacent tunnel that can secure stability, economy, and workability to the site. In this study, the tunnel pillar reinforcement method using prestress and grouting was reviewed. There are various reinforcement methods that can compensate for the problems of the side tunnel, but as the tunnel pillar construction method using prestress and grouting is judged to be excellent in field applicability, stability, and economic feasibility, it is necessary to review the theoretical and numerical analysis of the actual behavior mechanism. Therefore, a scaled-down model experiment was conducted. The reduced model experiment was divided into PC stranded wire + steel pipe reinforcement grouting + prestress (Case 1), PC strand + steel pipe reinforcement grouting (Case 2), and no reinforcement (Case 3), and the displacement of the pillar and the earth pressure applied to the wall were measured. Through experiments, it was confirmed that the PC stranded wire + steel pipe reinforcement grouting + prestress method is the most excellent reinforcement method among various construction methods. It was judged that it could be derived.

Recently, because of the restriction of land for construction and interference of adjacent structure, parallel tunnels with small clearance have been planned and constructed in many sites. In this case, the stability of pillar at center part is very important factor to satisfy the stability of tunnel structure under the construction. In this paper, numerical analyses for the asymmetry parallel tunnels with a narrow width of pillar have been carried out to search for the optimum reinforcement measure for rock pillar and verify the stability of tunnel. Rock pillar between each single tunnel is supposed to be under heavy load by rock mass. The analysis of stress state at rock pillar at various cases for construction conditions is required to investigate the structural behaviour of tunnels and stability of the pillar. Strength-stress ratio is calculated based on the failure theory of rock and the safety factor of tunnel is computed with strength reduction technique. Through these numerical results, reasonable reinforcement measures for rock pillar at parallel tunnel were established and recommended.
Recently, twin-tunnel is often designed in the aspects of disaster prevention and economical reasons. However, the design cases and the studies are relatively insufficient. By the twin-tunnel excavation, deviate stresses of pillar between tunnels are increased and the increased stresses induce the instability of the twin-tunnel. The objective of this study is to suggest a safe and economical pillar reinforcement method when very near-twin tunnels with a minimum interval of 1 m passes through a soft zone such as weathered soil or weathered rock. A standard cross-sectional view of a two-lane road tunnel was applied to suggest a pillar reinforcement method for the very near-twin tunnels. The thickness of the pillar was 1 m. The ground condition around the tunnel was weathered soil or weathered rock. There were four reinforcement methods for pillar stability evaluation. These were rock bolt reinforcement, pre-stressed steel strand reinforcement, horizontal steel pipe grouting reinforcement, horizontal steel pipe grouting + prestressed steel strand reinforcement. When the ground condition was weathered soil, only the pillar reinforced the horizontal steel pipe grouting + prestressed steel strand did not failed. When the ground condition was weathered rock, there were no failure of the pillar reinforced the horizontal steel pipe grouting or the horizontal steel pipe grouting + prestressed steel strand. It is considered that the horizontal steel pipe grouting reinforcement played a role in increasing the stability of the upper part of the pillar by supporting the upper load applied to the upper part of the pillar.

When evaluating pillar stability in very closely spaced tunnels, a local safety factor (strength/stress ratio) at the minimum width has been widely used. Tension bolts have been frequently applied as reinforcement for the cases where safety factors are less than 1.0 from FEM stress analysis. However, the local safety factor shows a constant value irrespective of the change in pillar width/tunnel diameter (PW/D) and the safety factor of the pillar is underestimated because the variation of deviation stress is relatively small even when the pre-stressing is applied to the tension bolt. In addition, the average safety factor proposed by Hoek and Brown(1980) was reviewed, but the pillar safety factor was relatively overestimated when the width of the pillar was increased. As an alternative, the SRM safety factor using shear strength reduction method shows the effect of changing the safety factor in the case of no reinforcement and tension bolt reinforcement as the pillar width/tunnel diameter(PW/D) changes. The failure shape is also similar to the previous limit theory result. In this study, the safety factor was evaluated without considering rock bolt and shotcrete to distinguish reinforcing effect of tension bolt.

Nationally, tunnel and underground constructions are necessary for the environmental sustainability and the efficient use of land space. For the importance of eco-friendly circumstances, 2-arch or large road tunnel has been designed so far. However, such a 2-arch or large tunnel has problems in terms of cost, constructability, construction period, and maintenance. Therefore, in this study, tunnel behavior and stability of rock pillar according to the pillar width and cover depth for parallel tunnels are investigated by performing FE analysis and using empirical formula. According to the results, Rock pillar is reinforced for distributed vertical load by Tie-Bolt due to unpredicted ground deformation, and the reinforced rock pillar's behaviour from the FE analysis shows a quite good agreement with field measurement. According to ground conditions, if the pillar width of the parallel tunnels is reduced, it can be more efficient in use of the tunnel space compared to previous tunnels.

Congestion of the city with the rapid industrial development was accelerated to build complex social infrastructure. And numerous structures have been designed and constructed in accordance with these requirements. Recently, to solve complex urban traffic, many researches of large-diameter tunnel under construction downtown are in progress. The large-diameter tunnel has been developed with a versatile double-deck of deep depth tunnel. For the safe tunnel construction, ground reinforcement methods have been developed in the weakened pillar section like as junction of tunnel. This paper focuses on evaluation of the effects of new developed ground reinforcement methods in double-deck junction. The values of reinforcement determined from the existing and developed methods were compared to each other by numerical simulation.
