  • Fiber reinforced shotcrete(FRS) is widely used in tunnel linings, which strengthen the rock surface and reduce the loosening of the rock strata. The advantages of FRS in tunnel linings are the unsusceptibility to crack, the benefit of shotcrete strength, and the superiority of toughness. In this study, the several evaluation methods of FRS toughness were investgated experimentally, which included the ASTM beam test, EFNARC square panel test and RTA round panel test. Especially, it was examined that the round panel test could fulfill the toughness evaluation of FRS.

  • Tunnels are generally constructed below the ground water table, which produces a long-term interaction between the tunnel lining and the surrounding geo-materials. Thus, in conjunction with tunnel design, the presence of water may require a number of considerations such as: leakage and water load. It has been reported that deterioration of a drainage system of tunnels is one of the main factors governing the long-term hydraulic and structural lining-ground interaction. Therefore, the design procedure of an underwater tunnel should address any detrimental effects associated with this interaction. In this paper an attempt to identify the coupled structural and hydraulic interaction between the lining and the ground was made using a numerical method. A main concern was given to local hindrance of flow into tunnels. Six cases of local deterioration of a drainage system were considered to investigate the effects of deterioration on tunnels. It is revealed that hindrance of flow increased pore-water pressure on the deteriorated areas, and caused detrimental effects on the lining structures. The analysis results were compared with those from fully permeable and impermeable linings.

  • Tunnels acting as drains involve groundwater-related problems such as deterioration of drainage systems or leakage through the linings. Generally initial and minor leakage problems can not be recognized by naked eyes. When the leakage over the linings is noticed, damages to structures and facilities have already occurred and could be considerable. Therefore it is vital to recognize initial leakage as early as possible and provide appropriate measures. Detection of leakage under operation requires installing piezometer. However, that may cause destruction of water proofing sheet which is generally not allowed. In this study electric resistivity method, one of the geophysical surveys, was adopted to detect possible leakage through tunnel linings. Physical lining models were made in the laboratory. The electric response was monitored for varying hydraulic conditions. It is shown that the method is very useful to detect initial leakage and monitor the malfunction of drainage system. Furthermore the method can also be used to check the quality of any repairing works of linings.

  • Since the mid of 1990, permanent shotcrete tunnel linings such as Single-shell and NMT have been constructed in many countries for reducing the construction time and lowing construction costs instead of conventional in-situ concrete linings. Among essential technologies for successful application of permanent shotcrete linings, high performance shotcrete having high strength, high durability and better pumpability has to be developed in advance as an integral component. This paper presents the idea and first experimental attempts to increase early strength and bond strength of wet-mixed Steel Fiber Reinforced Shotcrete (SFRS) in spring water condition. In order to increase early behavior of SFRS, a new approach using high-early strength cement with alkali-free liquid accelerator has been investigated. From the test results, wet-mix SFRS with high-early strength cement and alkali-free accelerator exhibited excellent early compressive strength improvement compared to the ordinary portland cement and good bond strength even under spring water condition.

  • It is very important to study on the structural behaviors of structurally damaged tunnel linings. A series of centrifuge model tests were performed in order to investigate different behaviors of tunnel linings. A 1/100-scaled aluminum horseshoe tunnel linings with a radius 5 cm, height 8 cm were buried in a depth with dry Joomunjin standard sand, the relative density of which was 86%. Such sectional forces as bending moments and thrusts along the tunnel circumference were measured by twelve strain gages. Earth pressures in soil mass and on the outside of lining model were estimated by pressure transducers, ground surface settlements at a center and edges by using LVDTs.

  • Various tunnels such as road, subway, and railway are under construction and operation. Various types of linings are used for structural stability of tunnel structures, and concrete segment linings are mainly installed in TBM tunnel construction. In this paper, when a fire occurs in a tunnel, the impact on the concrete segment lining, which is the structure in the tunnel, and related standards, fire resistance evaluation and fire resistance method are investigated through literature review and related contents are presented. Through this, it is intended to provide an information for practitioners to secure the safety of concrete segment linings against tunnel fires.

  • This paper has the aim of estimating the applicability of a numerical approach to the Hyperstatic Reaction Method (HRM) for the analysis of segmental tunnel linings. For this purpose, a simplified three-dimensional (3D) numerical model, using the $FLAC^{3D}$ finite difference software, has been developed, which allows analysing in a rigorous way the effect of the lining segmentation on the overall behaviour of the lining. Comparisons between the results obtained with the HRM and those determined by means of the simplified 3D numerical model show that the proposed HRM method can be used to investigate the behaviour of a segmental tunnel lining.

  • In recent years a number of catastrophic tunnel fires, the Euro tunnel, the Mont Blanc tunnel, the Tauem tunnel and the Gotthard tunnel, have occurred and inflicted serious damages to European countries. If a fire occurs in shield tunnels, the reinforced concrete segment linings playing as an important structural member is expected to damage severely and finally can be caused the collapse of tunnel. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the performance of concrete segment lining under heat exposure and to obtain information to assist a new technical approach to fighting fires in tunnels. In order to evaluate the fire-resistance performance of concrete segment by adding Polypropylene fibers, fire tests using the RABT heat-load curve is carried out. The temperature rise of this curve is very rapid up to $1200^{\circ}C$ within 5 minutes, and duration time of the $1200^{\circ}C$ exposure is 55 minutes. From the fire test, it was found that the explosive spalling was rapidly reduced by adding polypropylene fibers and this method is considered as an effective fireproof material to upgrade fire safety in tunnels economically.

  • Control of ground water is one of the most important factors for long-term operation of tunnel because most tunnels are located under the ground water level. In case of a drainage tunnel, there is no pore water pressure on the lining when the drainage system is properly working. After long-term operation, however, residual pore water pressure can be developed on the lining due to the deterioration of the drainage system. In this study, the water pressure distribution under obstruction condition of drainage material and conduit on the tunnel is numerically investigated using the ICFEP program and compared with the current value being applied to the residual water pressure for rational application plan of residual water pressure on the tunnel linings.

  • It is easily found by several references of NATM that the cracks on the lining concrete of NATM are more developed than those of the conventional tunnel methods. Based on the results of research, the new method is proposed to control and protect the axial cracks on the tunnel linings. Also, the efficiency of proposed method is evaluated using the Distinct Element Method.
