Risk Ranking for Tunnelling Construction Projects in Malaysia

  • Tunnelling has become a preferred method of construction for road and highway projects in countries with a lot of hilly slope geological conditions such as found in Malaysia. However the construction works of a tunnelling project are usually complicated and costly, which consequently impose great risks to the parties involved. This paper identifies the key significant risks and sub-risks for tunnelling construction projects in Malaysia through a case study. Interview has been used as the solitary means to determine the significant risks from contractor's eleven key project personnel who were directly involved in the tunnelling construction such as consultant, construction manager and tunnel engineers. The importance of the risks identified is then prioritised and ranked via the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP)'s pairwise comparison approach to determine their criticality towards a successful delivery of project. As a result, three key risks have been identified as significant for the tunnelling case study project, namely health and safety, cost overrun in construction and time overrun in construction. Two sub-risks each of the latter categories, which are cost underestimation and unforeseen events (cost overrun in construction) as well as plant and machinery failure and delay in material delivery (time overrun in construction), have occupied the top five overall risk ranking.

  • To secure the stability of geotechnical infrastructures and minimize failures during the construction process, a number of support systems have been introduced in the last several decades. In particular, stabilization methods using steel bars have been widely used in the field of geotechnical engineering. Rock bolt system is representative support system using steel bars. Pre-stressing has been applied to enhance reinforcement performance but can be released because of the failure of head or anchor sections. To overcome this deficiency, this paper proposes an innovative support system that can actively reinforce the weak ground along the whole structural element by introducing an active tension bolt containing a spring unit to the middle of the steel bar to increase its reinforcement capacity. In addition, the paper presents the support mechanism of the active tension bolt based on a theoretical study and employs an experimental study to validate the performance of the proposed active tension bolt based on a down-scaled model. To examine the feasibility of the active tension unit in a pillar, the paper considers a pullout test and a small-scale experimental model. The experimental results suggest the active tension bolt to be an effective support system for pillar reinforcement.

  • 본 연구에서는 GBM-UDEC(grain based model combined with Universal Distinct Element Code) 모델을 통해 암석의 역학적 거동을 모사하기 위한 수치해석기법을 소개하였다. 이를 적용하여 암석의 광물학적 구조를 다각형 입자의 집합체로 표현하고, 압축하중 하에서 암석의 파괴 특성 및 인장균열의 전파 양상를 살펴보았다. 제시된 수치해석모델은 단축압축강도시험 및 간접인장강도시험을 통해 관찰되는 암석의 역학적 거동 특성을 합리적으로 모사할 수 있는 것으로 나타났다.

  • In this paper, reliability analysis of surface settlement by ground water drawdown is performed using a reliability-groundwater flow numerical model. The result is compared with that of the deterministic model to evaluate the influence of the uncertainty from hydraulic conductivity in the soft ground as well as to determine the range of hydraulic conductivity of grouted ground. From the analyses, it was found that probability of failure to exceed the tolerable settlement was very high, if the hydraulic conductivity of grouted ground is decided from the deterministic flow model only. Reliability analysis which evaluates variance of hydraulic conductivity should be used together with the deterministic model for grouting design of tunnels to prevent ground water drawdown.

차세대 고속철도 차량 모델의 1.2차 현가요소의 고장 발생 시 안전성 해석 (The Safety Analysis under failure of the 1st and 2ne Suspension Elements of the Next Generation High-speed Train model)

  • In Korea, the next generation high-speed train, whose target is maximum speed of 400km/h and operating speed of 370km/h, has been developed since 2007. In this paper, the safety of the next generation high-speed train is compared UIC 518OR under the malfunctioning situation of the suspension system. The bogie of the next generation high-speed train has two suspensions. Two different vehicle models of the next generation high-speed train are created by using VAMPIRE and ADAMS/Rail, which are specialized to design railway vehicle. And Those models are showed same dynamic properties. First of all, the sensitivity analysis of ModelCenter is performed using model of VAMPIRE. One suspension element which has significant effects on the safety are selected by result of the sensitivity analysis. And then, the dynamic analysis when the suspension element is broken is performed using ADAMS/Rail. The 30km track between Pungsegyo and Biryong tunnel in Gyeongbu High-speed Line was used at the dynamic analysis. The estimated value is found by using the normal method of UIC 518OR. The estimated values on the normal/fault state and the limit values of UIC 518OR are compared. Finally, the safety of the next generation high-speed train is verified.

시추 및 야외조사 자료의 절취면 투영 분석 시스템 Fracjection (The Fracjection: An analytical system for projected fractures onto rock excavation surface from boreholes and outcrops)

  • Surveying rocks for engineering aims for prediction of geological feature of the construction site. Conventionally, survey information at outcrops and bore holes are projected to the construction sites, such as tunnel and slopes, and rock properties of the sites are predicted by interpretations of specialists. This system, the "Fracjection", aims to assist the specialist for visualization of the projected fractures from borehole and outcrop survey. The Fracjection accepts the BIPS and outcrop survey data to its database and allows plotting them in AutoCad map. The software also reads elevation data from contours of the topographic map and constructs DEM of the construction sites. With user's guide, it generates 3D excavation sites such as slopes and tunnels at the topographic map. The s/w projects borehole and outcrop surveyed fractures onto the modeled excavation surface and allows analysis of failure criteria, such as plane, wedge, and toppling failures by built-in stereonet function. Projected fractures can further be analyzed for structural homogeneities and rock mass quality. Moving window style correlation comparison of stereonet plots are used for formal analyses, and RQD type counts of the projected fractures are adopted for the latter analyses.

불연속면을 고려한 암반의 안정변형해석 (Stability and Deformation Analysis Considering Discontinuities in Rock Mass)

  • 암반에는 단층 절리 층리 균열 편리 벽개 등 불연속면이 포함되어 있다. 따라서, 불연속면을 포함한 암반의 역학적 거동은 연속체와는 다르게 불연속면의 역학적 거동에 좌우된다. 본 연구에서는 불연속면을 고려한 암반의 안정변형해석기법을 제안하고, 암반 붕괴재난현장에 적용했다. 암반 불연속면을 고려하여 평사투영법에 의한 안정해석과 개별절리요소를 포함한 유한요소법에 의한 변형해석 프로그램을 개발하여, 실제 암반 붕괴 재난현장 지역에서의 해석결과와 비교 및 검토를 하였다. 암반 현장에 적용하여 결과를 비교 검토함으로써, 암반의 파괴 거동 해석에 있어서 개발한 불연속면을 고려한 암반의 안정변형해석법의 적용성에 대한 검증을 하였다.

  • 본 연구에서는 Class II 거동에 대해 입자결합모델을 이용하여 수치해석적인 방법으로 살펴보았으며, 횡방향 변형률 제어 압축시험을 수치해석적으로 모사할 수 있는 방법을 제시하였다. 수치해석에서 사용된 미시변수는 스웨덴 Aspo Hard Rock Laboratory에서 수행한 일축압축시험을 이용하여 결정하였다. 제시된 수치해석 기법을 이용해 Aspo 암석의 Class II 거동을 효과적으로 모사할 수 있었으며, 수치해석의 결과는 실험실 시험 결과와 잘 일치하였다.

  • 건설공사에서 장비의 성능은 공사 전반에 걸쳐서 생산성, 효율성, 공사비용과 공사 기간에 큰 영향을 미친다. 시뮬레이션은 효과적인 건설공사 관리를 위하여 공사 장비 및 자재 등의 적절한 조합을 고려하고 실제 공사에 미칠 영향을 예측하고 분석할 수 있는 기법이다. 본 연구에서는 도심지 지하철 터널현장의 버력처리 공정을 대상으로 CYCLONE을 이용하여 모델링을 구축하고, 버력처리 공정에 투입되는 카리프트 장비의 성능에 따른 생산성을 비교 분석하였다. 시뮬레이션 분석 결과 카리프트 장비의 성능 향상에 따라 생산성이 향상됨을 확인하였으며 이를 통하여 공기의 단축이 이루어질 수 있음을 보여준다.

균열모형을 이용한 암석거동의 수치해석 (Numerical analysis of rock behavior with crack model implementation)

  • 암석은 불연속면들에 의해 다양한 방식의 거동을 보인다. 이러한 암석의 복잡한 파괴와 변형거동을 해석하기 위한이전의 많은 연구들은 균열모델의 개발에 중점을 두었다. 본 연구에서는 석탄과 같은 파쇄 암석에 대해 활주균열모형과 전단균열모형의 타당성을 검토하였고 모델을 수치해석에 적용하였다. 수치해석을 수행하기 위해 여러 방식으로 유한 요소 프로그램을 수정하였다. 2차원 해석에서 횡등방성을 설명하기 위하여 대칭축의 방향에 대해 응력-변형률 관계를 수정하였고, 균열성장에 따른 유효탄성계수의 변화를 계산하였다. 2차원 실내 단축압축시험의 가단한 예를 해석하였으며 해석결과는 실내시험에서 구한 결과와 일치하였다.
