  • In computational study of the flow in piston engines and the flow through moving valves, the use of moving vertices is essential for modelling flows with moving boundaries. The positions of cell vertices in such cases must be allowed to vary with time. To simulate 3-dimensional port-valve and piston-cylinder of HIMSEN 6H21/32 engine, a commercially available code, STAR-CD, was used. Changes in mesh geometry was specified by PROSTAR commands.(i.e. the Change Grid operation in the EVENTS command module.) Control of the intake flow is expected to play an important role as designers seek to obtain better fuel spray characteristics, fuel mixing and mixture preparation, combustion performance, and emissions reductions to meet national standards. As a result of analysis, velocity fields indicate the presence of a structured flow comprised of one pair of counter-rotating vortices under the intake valve during the early induction process. These flow structures remain visible for most of the intake process. As the piston moves towards BDC, these vortices develops into a larger tumbling motion that dominates the flow structure.

  • The orientation and deformation of polymer chains in a confined channel flow has been investigated. The polymer chain was modeled as a Finitely Extensible Nonlinear Elastic (FENE) dumbbell. The Brownian configuration field method was extended to take the interaction between the flow and local chain dynamics into account. Drag and Brownian forces were treated as anisotropic in order to reflect the influence of the wall in the confined flow. Both Poiseuille flow and 4 : 1 contraction flow were considered. Of particular interest was molecular tumbling of polymer chains near the wall. It was strongly influenced by anisotropic drag and high shear close to the wall. We discussed the mechanism of this particular behavior in terms of the governing forces. The dumbbell configuration was determined not only by the wall interaction but also by the flow type of the geometric origin. The effect of extensional flow on dumbbell configuration was also discussed by comparing with the Poiseuille flow.

  • Tumbling motion is very effective for turbulence enhancement during compression process in the cylinder of 4-valve engines. In this paper the tumble decay mechanism for different intake port configuration were measured using laser Doppler velocimetry. Analysis of the tumble decay mechanism was achieved by means of two non-dimensional parameters, defined as tumble eccentricity and shape factor in tumble velocity profile, in addition to the tumble moment.

  • This keynote presentation covers the subject of intelligent systems development for monitoring and control in various NASA space applications. Similar intelligent systems technology also has applications in terrestrial commercial applications. Discussion will be given of the general approach of intelligent systems and description given of intelligent systems under prototype development for possible use in Space Shuttle Upgrade, in the Experimental Crew Return. Vehicle, and in free-flying space robotic cameras to provide autonomy to these spacecraft with flexible human intervention, if desired or needed. Development of intelligent system monitoring and control for regenerative life support subsystems such as NASA's human rated Bio-PLEX test facility is also described. A video showing two recent world's firsts in real-time vision-guided robotic arm and hand grasping of tumbling and translating complex shaped objects in micro-gravity will also be shown.

  • The flow characteristics of five different 4-valve cylinder heads were investigated in a steady flow rig using laser-Doppler velocimetry. The tumble flow of each head with pentroof combustion chamber was quantified by nondimensional tumble number using a tumble adaptor. The formation of tumbling vortex was examined in an optical single-cylinder engine which has windows for in-cylinder LDV measurements. Tumble vortex ratio was estimated from the tumble flow measurement. The four-valve cylinder heads with pent-roof combustion chamber showed the tumble vortex from the intake process, which was investigated in the steady flow test. The tumble adaptor which converts the tumble into swirl flow was found to be feasible in predicting the tumble flow in the real engine. The tumble strength in the steady flow test coincides with that in the real engine experiment within 15%. It was found that the steady flow test on the four-valve cylinder heads provides the tip for a better design of cylinder head.

  • Larger proteins (above molecular weight 50 kDa) usually show slow motional tumbling in solution, which facilitates the decay of NMR signal, resulting in poor signal-to-noise. In the past twenty years, researchers have tried to overcome this problem with higher molecular weight by improvement of hardware (higher magnetic field and cryoprobe), optimization of pulse sequences for lager molecules, and development of isotope-labeling techniques. Actually, GroEL/ES complex (${\approx}$ 900 kDa) was successfully studied using combination of above techniques. Among the techniques used in large molecular studies, the impact of isotope-labeling for large molecules study is summarized and discussed here.

  • This paper is the second of 3 companion papers which investigate axial stratification process. In-cylinder fuel behavior has been investigated in the port injected Sl engine by visualizing for the purpose of understanding stratification. Planar laser light sheet from an Nd:YAG laser has been illuminated through the transparent quartz cylinder of the single cylinder optical engine and the Mie scattered light has been captured through the quartz window in the piston head with an ICCD camera. Fuel has been replaced with an air-ethanol mixture to utilize atomized fuel spray fur the visualization purposes. This results have been compared with steady flow concentration measurement. For low/medium swirl port, the early injection makes such a fuel distribution state that is upper-rich, middle-lean and lower-rich along the combustion chamber and cylinder by tumbling motion. On the other hand, the late injection induces upper-rich, middle-lean and lower-rich state due to the short fuel penetration.
