Internationally representative steel design standards have forbidden or limited the application of high-strength steels to tubular joints, partly because of concerns about their unique material characteristics such as high yield ratio. Most of design standards stipulate that for steels whose yield strengths exceed 355 or 360 MPa, the strength equations cannot be utilized or strength reduction factor below 1.0 should be multiplied. However, the mechanical background behind these limitations is not clear. Experimental testing of high-strength steel CHS (circular hollow section) X-joints recently conducted by the authors also clearly indicated that the current limitations might be unduly conservative. As a continuing work, extensive, test-validated numerical analyses were made to investigate the behavior of high-strength steel CHS X-joint under axial compression. Three steel grades covering ordinary to very high strength steels were considered in the analysis. Again it was found that the high strength penalty to the joint strength in current standards is too severe and needs to be relaxed. The high-strength steel joints under the effects of chord stress generally showed higher strength than the ordinary steel joints and their strengths were conservatively predicted by current standards. It is also emphasized that current format of the CHS X-joint strength equation does not reflect observed behavior and needs to be recast.
This paper is concerned with a theoretical study on the local load-carrying capacities of Concrete-Filled Circular Tubular(CFCT) column to H-beam connections by yield line theory. In this paper, the three cases which are assumed the yield line are involved. The first model is a simplified yield line model. The second model is modified by x and kx factors. The last one is a Morita's model. The local load-carrying capacities of CFCT column to H-beam connections has been studied both experimentally and theoretically using the yield line theory. The purpose of this paper is to suggest the basic data for developing the non-diaphragm connection.

This study discusses the inelastic behavior of single-layer latticed dome, which consists of a tubular truss member and newly proposed joint sections, through a loading test on a scaled-down structure. The loading test was performed under displacement control conditions, using loading transfer system for the same value of point loads on all joints. The maximum applied load was nearly 1.6 times of the design load, and structural failure occurred after exceeding the compressive yielding in some members. Structural displacement was maintained up to the limit of the oil jack. The behavior of the latticed dome from the loading test was analyzed according to the order of loading steps.
Concrete filled steel tubular (CFT) columns are becoming popular in structural applications. The increased popularity comes from their excellent structural properties such as high strength, high ductility, and large energy absorption capacity. However, the disadvantage feature of CFT column is the difficulty in predicting its time dependant characteristic (i.e., creep and shrinkage) of inner concrete. The time dependent behavior of CFT column can cause serious serviceability problems. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate the long term behavior of CFT column. This paper presents analytical and experimental studies on long-term behavior of CFT-column under a central axial loading. Two loading cases are considered in the research; (1) the load applied only at the inner core concrete of CFT-column and (2) the load applied simultaneously on both concrete and steel tube. Analysis method using the bond strength model is proposed and conclusions on long-term properties of CFT-column can be derived from the results.

A composite pile consisted of a concrete lower part with a steel tubular pile at upper part was installed by pre-drilling method. Seven pairs of strain gauges and inclinometer were attached on the pile in order to measure stresses and displacement along the pile during the lateral loading test. The results of instrumentation were analyzed using various theoretical approaches. The back analysis showed that the measured stresses were smaller than those of the calculated. The maximum stress is measured at the steel upper part and decreased rapidly with depth of the pile. The calculated lateral displacement along the pile provide very good agreement with the measured values if the coefficient of subgrade reaction is selected properly. The design concept of a composite pile is verified by the measured stresses and displacement which is within the tolerable limits of the pile.
A new type of precast CFST column to RC beam braced frame is proposed in this paper. A series of shake table tests were conducted to excite a one-third scale six-story model for investigating the global seismic performance of this type of structure against earthquake actions. Particular emphasis was given to its dynamic property, global seismic responses and failure path. Correspondingly, a numerical model built on the basis of fiber-beam-element model, multi-layer shell model and element-deactivation method was developed to simulate the seismic performance of the prototype structure. Numerical results were compared with the measured values from shake table tests to verify the validity and reliability of the numerical model. The results demonstrated that the proposed novel precast CFST column to RC beam braced frame performs excellently under strong earthquake excitations; the "strong CFST column-weak RC beam" and "strong connection-weak member" anti-seismic design principles can be easily achieved; the maximum deflections of precast CFSTC-RCB braced frame satisfied the deflection limitations proposed in national code; the numerical model can properly simulate the dynamic property and responses of the precast CFSTC-RCB braced frame that are highly concerned in engineering practice.
Developed from conventional concrete filled steel tubular (CFST) members, concrete-encased CFST has attracted growing attention in building and bridge practices. In actual construction, the inner CFST is erected prior to the casting of the outer reinforced concrete part to support the construction preload, after which the whole composite member is under sustained service load. The complex loading sequence leads to highly nonlinear material interaction and consequently complicated structural performance. This paper studies the full-range behaviour of concrete-encased CFST columns with initial preload on inner CFST followed by sustained service load over the whole composite section. Validated against the reported data obtained from specifically designed tests, a finite element analysis model is developed to investigate the detailed structural behaviour in terms of ultimate strength, load distribution, material interaction and strain development. Parametric analysis is then carried out to evaluate the impact of significant factors on the structural behaviour of the composite columns. Finally, a simplified design method for estimating the sectional capacity of concrete-encased CFST is proposed, with the combined influences of construction preload and sustained service load being taken into account. The feasibility of the developed method is validated against both the test data and the simulation results.

It is almost impossible to evaluate the ultimate strength theoretically, because the behavior of Gusset-Tube connection stiffened with rib-plate is considerably complicate. Therefore in this study a finite element model of gusset-tube connection stiffened with rib-plate was established. The validity of finite element analysis was examined through comparing with previous experimental result and the behavior and strength of the connection was examined. From the parametric study considering lateral force ratio, eccentricity, gusset length based on finite element model, the stiffened effect was estimated and stiffening method was proposed.
This paper is a study on the structural behavior of CFCT(Concrete-Filled Circular Tubular) column to H-beam connections with longitudinal rib. The important parameters are being longitudinal rib or not. variable column thickness(5.8mm. 9.2mm. 12.0mm. 15.0mm) around the joint between CFCT and H-beam and the width of flange to diameter. Test results are summarized for the strength, initial stiffness, failure mode and energy absorption capacities of each specimen. These are compared with the theoretical results(Yield line theory, numerical analysis). Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to investigate the stiffness and the strength of connections to evaluate the structural behavior of the CFCT column to H-beam connections with longitudinal rib.
This mixed-use Raffles City (RCH) development is located near the Qiantang River in Hangzhou, the capital of Zhejiang province, located southwest of Shanghai, China. The project incorporates retail, offices, housing, and hotel facilities and marks the site of a cultural landscape within the Quianjiang New Town Area. The project is composed of two 250-meter-tall twisting towers with a form of vibrant waves, along with a commercial podium and three stories of basement car parking. It reaches a height of 60 stories, presenting views both to and from the Qiantang River and West Lake areas, with a total floor area of almost 400,000 square meters. A composite moment frame plus concrete core structural system was adopted for the tower structures. Concrete filled steel tubular (CFT) columns together with steel reinforced concrete (SRC) beams form the outer moment frame of the towers' structure. The internal slabs and floor beams are of reinforced concrete. This paper presents the engineering design and construction of this highly complex project. Through comprehensive discussion and careful elaboration, some conclusions are reached, which serve as a reference guide for the design and construction of similar free-form, hybrid, mix-use buildings.
