The freezing resistance of Eleocharis kuroguqai was evaluated in artifical and natural freezing conditions in relation to tuber size, depth of tuber burial and soil moisture conditions. Osmotic potential of immature and mature tuber of E. kuroguqai before hardening was -12.1 and -23.5 bar, respectively, but decreased to -61. 0 and -67.1 bar after 120-day hardening period. Percent survival of E. kuroguqai tubers during the winter period was 13% and 67% in dry and moist moisture conditions at burial of 5cm depth, but all tubers were survived in the three moisture conditions employed when buried at 25cm depth. Greater decrease of osmotic potential was observed in tubers buried at 5cm depth than tubers buried at 25cm depth, resulting in greater freezing resistance in the former. Large tuber was more susceptable to freezing temperatures than small tuber.
This study was conducted to dentify the optimum plantlet type of 'Solara' potatoes (Solanum tuberosum L.) for growth in an aeroponics system. Plantlets of 'Solara' were transplanted on March 16, 2015 in a greenhouse, and growth and yield characteristics were investigated at 70 and 78 days after transplanting, respectively. Stem length was shorter in plantlet of 15-day-old stem cuttings and acclimatization of culture, and the stem length of plantlets of stem cuttings tended to increase with increasing stem cutting age. The fresh weight of plants was the highest in the plantlets of 40-day-old stem cuttings and the lowest in non-rooted stem cuttings and acclimatization of culture. The highest number of first stolons was obtained in 35-day-old stem cuttings. The number of second stolons was the highest in plantlets of 35-day-old stem cuttings, acclimatization of culture, and 30- day-old stem cuttings. The total number of tubers was higher in plantlets of 35-day-old stem cuttings and acclimatization of culture, and the number of tubers above 3 g was the highest in plantlets of 35-day-old stem cuttings. The weight of tubers above 3 g was the heaviest in plantlets of 35-day-old stem cuttings(1,947 g per 10 plants), followed by plantlets of 30-day-old stem cuttings. These results indicate that plantlets of 30 to 35-day-old stem cuttings could be the best for production of 'Solara' potato tubers in an aeroponics system.
Recently, as famous YouTubers produce and broadcast videos that receive sponsorship and advertising such as indirect advertising (PPL), a so-called 'back advertising' controversy continues, and not only famous YouTubers but also entertainers are caught up in the issue. It is causing confusion among the public in Korea. This study attempts to find out the public's reaction before and after the controversy of 'back advertising' by YouTubers through comment analysis. Specifically, among text analysis using R programs, we intend to analyze the issue through various methods such as word cloud, qgraph analysis, LDA, and word2vec analysis, a deep learning technique. The target of the analysis was to analyze the channels of three YouTubers who belonged to the controversy of the 'back advertising' YouTuber and uploaded the 'Apology video'. The 5 most recent videos of Muk-bang YouTuber Moon Bok-hee, who has a similar content disposition to SussTV's Han Hye-yeon stylist, which was controversial, and Yang Pang, a YouTuber who showed various contents (August 09, 2020) Criterion and her first 5 videos uploaded were reviewed. As a result of the study, most of the comments that showed positive reactions before the controversy, but after the controversy, it was found that negative reactions accounted for most of the comments. Therefore, this study examines the degree of change of the public about influencers through comments after the controversy over 'back advertising' through various analysis using R program. This research also devises various measures to prevent the occurrence of back advertising of influencers in the future.
The composition of soluble neutral carbohydrates in jerusalem artichoke tubers was measured and compared according to harvest dates and storage temperatures using HPLC. The breakdown of inulin $({\ge}GF8)$ into sucrose and fructo-oligosaccharides (GF2-GF7) was highest on November just after cold-shock. The composition of sucrose and fructo-oligosaccharides on March was much higher than that on September of previous year. Inulin $({\ge}GF8)$ proportion decreased from 66.4% to 33.1% but the proportion of fructo-oligosaccharides (GF2-GF7) and sucrose increased from 25% to 61% and from 3.4% to 13.6%, respectively. The storage at a low temperature $(4^{\circ}C)$ for 34 days increased the composition as well. However, the amount of fructo-oligosaccharides was decreased when the tubers harvested in March were stored at high temperature $(25^{\circ}C{\sim}40^{\circ}C)$. For the maximam yield of fructo-oligosaccharides in jerusalem artichoke, it is concluded that the tubers be harvested in March and/or stored at the low temperature.
Sagittaria pygmaea Miquel is widely infested and is the most dominant perennial weed in paddy field in Korea. This study was carried out in order to clarify the factors influencing tuber production and the competition ecology. The tuberization capacity in the paddy field transplanted with the small seedlings of rice was higher than in the paddy field transplanted with the vigor seedlings of rice. The stage which rice plants were most damaged by S. pygmaea plants was the period from 31 to 37 days after transplanting. According to the increasing of Eleocharis acicularis Roem. in the condition of rice cultivation, the number of S. pygmaea plants was remarkably reduced. Small size tubers planted within deep soil produced less tubers than large size tubers did. The number of plants and tubers were remarkably increased under the high levels of fertilization. Phosphorus was essential as well as nitrogen for tuberization. And the tuberization capapcity was different with the organic matter content in soil and with the soil moisture.
Potato cv. 'Haryeong' was bred with high solids, resistance to late blight and good culinary quality. It has been registered as new potato variety in 2005. Tuber necrosis symptoms such as severe superficial necrosis, raised surface lesions and ringed necrotic areas were found in tubers of 'Haryeong' during storage of seed potatoes in 2010. Potato virus Y (PVY) was detected from these symptomatic tubers by the analysis of RT-PCR using a primer set specific to coat protein gene of PVY. The nucleotide sequence of RT-PCR product ($PVY^{Hkr}$) was determined and compared to those of other strains, such as $PVY^{Kor}$, $PVY^N$, $PVY^{NTN}$, $PVY^O$, and $PVY^C$ registered in GeneBank. The result showed that $PVY^{Hkr}$ was exactly the same as $PVY^{Kor}$, Korean isolate reported in 2005, except two nucleotides. To verify the PVY was responsible for the tuber necrosis symptoms shown in the tubers of 'Haryeong', a bioassay was done using two viruses (PVY and Potato leafroll virus) and five potato cultivars ('Haryeong', 'Superior', 'Atlantic', 'Dejima', and 'Chubaek'). As expected, the same necrosis symptom appeared in tubers of 'Haryeong' infected with PVY only during the storage period.
BACKGROUND: In order to cultivate upland crops in reclaimed land, economically appropriate crops should be selected. Jerusalem artichoke (Helianthus tuberosus L.) is one of the primary sources for inulin in higher plants. The objective of this study was to evaluate and compare growth and inulin of H. tuberosus L. according to the cultivation region in Korea. METHODS AND RESULTS: 21 varieties of H. tuberosus L. were collected in Korea, and then 7 varieties of H. tuberosus L. were selected for this study. To compare growth and inulin, those varieties were cultivated in reclaimed land and upland soils. The growth of H. tuberosus L. significantly decreased when cultivated in reclaimed land. There was an increas at 17.8% in the content of white H. tuberosus L. tuber inulin in reclaimed land. CONCLUSION: The content of inulin in H. tuberosus L. tubers was found to be dependent on cultivation region and tuber color. There was a difference of the inulin content between the tubers with different colors in reclaimed land. Purple tubers of P20 were considered suitable varieties for cultivation in reclaimed land. White tubers of W1 and W8 were also considered suitable varieties for cultivation in reclaimed land.
Growth and tuber development of ‘Black Magic’calla lily as affected by the rain shelter with 50% shading and the tuber size were investigated. Tubers of five grades in size were cultivated in the rain shelter or in the open field (control). Days to emergence of shoots in the rain shelter was accelerated by 4.2 days as compared to the open field. Emergence ratio was higher as the tuber was larger, tubers grown in the rain shelter showed the significance in the growth characteristics as compared to the control. There were no significant differences in the number of flowers per tuber between the rain shelter and the open field. Flower quality was 12.2 cm longer than that in the open field. flowering characteristics was improved with the increasing tuber size. Low infection of soft rot disease of 3∼22% was found in the rain shelter as compared to the that of 19∼83% in the open field. Thus tubers produced under the rain shelter showed improved quality, Even if the small tubers with diameters of 0.5∼1.0 cm were cultivated in the rain shelter, the weight and diameters of tuber harvested after approximately 7 months were 50.2 g and 5.7 cm, respectively.
This study was carried out to investigate the effects of stem cutting ages and harvest time on the growth and yield of potato 'Dejima' in aeroponics. The stem cuttings were produced from in vitro plantlets and transplanted into an aeroponic system with 20, 30, 40 and 50 day-old stem cuttings (DOS). Tubers were harvested 60, 70, 80 and 90 days after transplanting (DAT) and sorted into following categories: $1{\sim}5$, $5{\sim}10$, $10{\sim}20$, $20{\sim}30$, $30{\sim}40$ and over 40 g. Plant height from the 40 DOS was the highest during the growing periods but no significant difference was observed on 75 DAT. The tuber weight increased until 90 DAT with the greatest weight of tubers in the 20 and 40 DOS. However, there was no significant difference among 20, 30 and 40 DOS in the number and weight of tubers. Harvesting at 80 and 90 DAT increased the number of tubers over 5 g, which are usually considered as appropriate for direct field planting.
The genus Armillaria is important because they produce Gastrodia tubers. Seventy two isolates of Armillaria were obtained from fruit bodies grown on decayed wood in Korea. Twenty four isolates from Pinus koraiensis were identified as A. ostoyae. Two isolates from G. elata growing in the field were identified as A. mellea. Seven isolates from Acer ginnala and Quercus spp. were identified as A. tabescens. Thirty nine isolates were identified as A. gallica. Armillaria gallica was isolated from Quercus spp., Ainus japonica, Vitis amurensis and Prunus sargentii. Armillaria spp. isolates were divided into four groups based on the cultural characteristics. Group II (A. gallica KNU-A110) was better than the other groups for mycelial growth and rhizomorph formation. Isolate KNU-A110 proved to be good for production of G. elata tubers. This fungus forms mycelial fan in the plant tissue and rhizomorphs in contact with G. elata tubers. Gastrodia spp. was found in thirteen sites in Kangweon province in Korea. The plants were divided into three different kinds based on stem color. Plants with stems of brownish orange and greyish yellow were identified as G. elata, and those with greyish green colored stems were identified as G. gracilis. Gastrodia was collected mainly from humus soils rich in leaf debris, and slopes facing south from mid-May to mid-July. Once the new tubers are formed from the ancestry tuber, the ancestry tuber begins to decay. The offspring tuber, apparently gaining nutrients through rhizomorphs, begins to grow in length and slowly to enlarge. It takes three years for the offspring tuber to become ancestry tuber.
