  • Along the shoreline a special treatment is required to simulate movement of periodic waves such as tsunami and tide because of continuous movement of shoreline as waves rise and recede. A moving boundary treatment is first proposed to track the movement of shoreline in this study. The treatment is then employed to obtain a maximum inundation area to be used for mitigation of coastal flooding. The obtained maximum inundation zone for a specific location is compared to that of available observed data. A reasonable agreement is observed.

  • Acoustic and pressure type seabed installed wave sensors have advantage in observing long period infra-gravity wave and tsunami, while buoy type wave gauges which measure acceleration of the moored buoy motion are not able to detect long period waves. That's why most of the Japanese coastal wave observation sensors are seabed installed typed ones. Nationwide Japanese coastal wave observation systems with seabed installed sensors are gradually clarifying long-period tsunami profiles and infra-gravity wave characteristics (Nagai.et.al., 1996, 1997,2000,2002a,2002b). • Tsunami generated by the 1992 Nicaragua's west coast earthquake caused 95 persons death, 155 persons injury and 3000 persons homelessness. The previous study done by Imamura et al. (1993) were on the 1992 Nicaragua tsumami generation and propagation which were simulated by using spherical far-field model and Cartesian near-field model, and the computed results with assumption of vertical wall at coast were adjusted by runup ratio to compare with observations. This study using moving boundary model hindcasts El Transito's runup height which was observed as about 6.4-9.9m.
