SQP method is one of the most important methods for solving nonlinear programming. But it may fail if the quadratic subproblem is inconsistent. In this paper, we propose a modified nonmonotone filter trust region method in which the QP subproblem is consistent. By means of nonmonotone filter, this method has no demand on the penalty parameter which is difficult to obtain. Moreover, the restoration phase is not needed any more. Under reasonable conditions, we obtain the global convergence of the algorithm. Some numerical results are presented.
In this paper, we propose a digital image stabilization technique using edge detection and Lucas-Kanade optical flow in order to minimize the motion of the shaken image. The accuracy of motion estimation based on block matching technique depends on the size of search window, which results in long calculation time. Therefore it is not applicable to real-time system. In addition, since the size of vector depends on that of block, it is difficult to estimate the motion which is bigger than the block size. The proposed method extracts the trust region using edge detection, to estimate the motion of some critical points in trust region based on Lucas-Kanade optical flow algorithm. The experimental results show that the proposed method stabilizes the shaking of motion image effectively in real time.
The sensitivity-based finite element model updating method has received increasing attention in damage detection of structures based on measured modal parameters. Finding an optimization technique with high efficiency and fast convergence is one of the key issues for model updating-based damage detection. A new simple and computationally efficient optimization algorithm is proposed and applied to damage detection by using finite element model updating. The proposed method combines the Gauss-Newton method with region truncation of each iterative step, in which not only the constraints are introduced instead of penalty functions, but also the searching steps are restricted in a controlled region. The developed algorithm is illustrated by a numerically simulated 25-bar truss structure, and the results have been compared and verified with those obtained from the trust region method. In order to investigate the reliability of the proposed method in damage detection of structures, the influence of the uncertainties coming from measured modal parameters on the statistical characteristics of detection result is investigated by Monte-Carlo simulation, and the probability of damage detection is estimated using the probabilistic method.

The shape of plate-fin type heat sink is numerically optimized to acquire the minimum pressure drop under the required temperature rise. In constrained nonlinear optimization problems of thermal/fluid systems, three fundamental difficulties such as high computational cost for function evaluations (i.e., pressure drop and thermal resistance), the absence of design sensitivity information, and the occurrence of numerical noise are commonly confronted. Thus, a sequential approximate optimization (SAO) algorithm has been introduced because it is very hard to obtain the optimal solutions of fluid/thermal systems by means of gradient-based optimization techniques. In this study, the progressive quadratic response surface method (PQRSM) based on the trust region algorithm, which is one of sequential approximate optimization algorithms, is used for optimization and the heat sink is optimized by combining it with the computational fluid dynamics (CFD).

Global optimization is a method for finding more reliable models in various fields, such as financial engineering, pattern recognition, process optimization. In this study, we compare and analyze the performance of the state-of-the-art global optimization techniques, which include Genetic Algorithm (DE,SCGA), Simulated Annealing (ASA, DSSA, SAHPS), Tabu & Direct Search (DTS, DIRECT), Deterministic (MCS, SNOBIT), and Trust-Region algorithm. The test functions for the experiments are Benchmark problems in Hedar & Fukushima (2004), which are evaluated with respect to efficiency and accuracy. Through the experiment, we analyse the computational complexity of the methods and finally discuss the pros and cons of them.
Active surface adjustment of cable net structures is becoming significant when large-size cable net structures are widely applied in various fields, especially in satellite antennas. A general-duty adjustment method based on active cables is proposed to achieve active surface adjustment or surface profile reconfiguration of cable net structures. Piezoelectric actuators and voice coil actuators are selected for constructing active cable structures and their simplified mechanical models are proposed. A bilevel optimization model of active surface adjustment is proposed based on the nonlinear static model established by the direct stiffness method. A pattern search algorithm combined with the trust region method is developed to solve this optimization problem. Numerical examples of a parabolic cable net reflector are analyzed and different distribution types of active cables are compared.
A low-energy dielectric loaded accelerator with a non-uniform, multi-segment structure is studied and optimized. So far, no analytical solution is provided for such structures. Also, due to the existing nonlinear behavior and a large number of geometric parameters, the problem of numerical optimizations is complex. For this reason, a method is presented to design and optimize such structures using the Genetic Algorithm (GA). Moreover, the GA output results are compared with Trust Region (TR) and Nelder-Mead Simplex (NMS) methods. Comparative results show that the GA is more efficient in achieving optimization goals and also has a higher speed than the two other methods. Finally, an optimized accelerating tube is integrated into a proper coupler. Then, the accelerator is simulated for full electromagnetic investigations using the CST suite of codes. This design leads to a structure with a power of about 80 kW in the X-band, which delivers electrons to the output energy in the range of 300-459 kV. The length and outer diameter of the accelerating tube obtained are 10 cm and 1 cm, respectively.
This study presents results of aerodynamic wing optimization under uncertainties. To consider uncertainties, an alternative strategy for reliability-based design optimization(RBDO) is developed. The strategy utilizes a single loop algorithm and a sequential approximation optimization(SAO) technique. The SAO strategy relies on the trust region-SQP framework which validates approximated functions at every iteration. Further improvement in computational efficiency is achieved by applying the same sensitivity of limit state functions in the reliability analysis and in the equivalent deterministic constraint calculation. The framework is examined by solving an analytical test problem to show that the proposed framework has the computational efficiency over existing methods. The proposed strategy enables exploiting the RBDO technique in aerodynamic design. For the aerodynamic wing design problem, the solution converges to the reliable point satisfying the probabilistic constraints.

A nonlinear creep function incorporated into the elastic visco-plastic model may describe the long-term soil deformation more accurately. However, by applying the conventional procedure, there are challenges to determine the model parameters due to limitation of suitable data points. This paper presents a numerical solution to obtain several parameters simultaneously for a nonlinear elastic visco-plastic (EVP) model using the available consolidation data. The finite difference scheme using the Crank-Nicolson procedure is applied to solve a set of coupled partial differential equations of the time dependent strain and pore water pressure dissipation. The model parameters are determined by applying the algorithm of trust-region reflective optimisation in conjunction with the finite difference solution. The proposed method utilises all available consolidation data during dissipation of the excess pore water pressure to determine the required model parameters. Moreover, the reference time in the elastic visco-plastic model can readily be adopted as a unit of time; denoting creep is included in the numerical predictions explicitly from the very first time steps. In this paper, the settlement predictions of thick soft clay layers are presented and discussed to evaluate and compare the accuracy and reliability of the proposed method against the graphical procedure to obtain the model parameters. In addition, comparison of the available experimental results to the numerical predictions confirms the accuracy of the numerical procedure.

In this work, optimization of two-stage shock absorption system for lunar lander has been carried out. Because of complexity of impact phenomena of shock absorption system, a 1-D constitutive model is proposed to describe the behavior of shock absorption system. Quadratic polynomial regression meta-model is constructed by using a commercial software ABAQUS with the proposed 1-D constitutive model, and sequential approximate optimization of two-stage shock absorption system has been carried out along with the constructed meta-model. Through the optimization, it is verified that landing impact force on lunar lander can be considerably reduced by changing the cell size and foil thickness of honeycomb structure in two-stage shock absorption system.
