Dynamic analysis of a typical concrete gravity dam-reservoir system is formulated by FE-(FE-TE) approach (i.e., Finite Element-(Finite Element-Truncation Element)). In this technique, dam and reservoir are discretized by plane solid and fluid finite elements. Moreover, the H-W (i.e., Hagstrom-Warburton) high-order condition imposed at the reservoir truncation boundary. This task is formulated by employing a truncation element at that boundary. It is emphasized that reservoir far-field is excluded from the discretized model. The formulation is initially reviewed which was originally proposed in a previous study. Thereafter, the response of Pine Flat dam-reservoir system is studied due to horizontal and vertical ground motions for two types of reservoir bottom conditions of full reflective and absorptive. It should be emphasized that study is carried out under high order of H-W condition applied on the truncation boundary. The initial part of study is focused on the time harmonic analysis. In this part, it is possible to compare the transfer functions against corresponding responses obtained by FE-(FE-HE) approach (referred to as exact method). Subsequently, the transient analysis is carried out. In that part, it is only possible to compare the results for low and high normalized reservoir length cases. Therefore, the sensitivity of results is controlled due to normalized reservoir length values.
This work presents a time-truncation scheme, based on the Lagrange interpolation polynomial, for the solution of the two-dimensional scalar wave problem by the time-domain boundary element method. The aim is to reduce the number of stored matrices, due to the convolution integral performed from the initial time to the current time, and to keep a compromise between computational economy and efficiency and the numerical accuracy. In order to verify the accuracy of the proposed formulation, three examples are presented and discussed at the end of the article.
We modify the formulation of a recently developed absorbing boundary condition (ABC), the perfectly matched discrete layers (PMDL), to incorporate the excitation coming from the exterior such as earthquake waves. The modified formulation indicates that the effect of the exterior excitation can be incorporated into PMDL ABCs (traditionally designed to treat only interior excitation) simply by applying appropriate forces on the nodes connected to the first PMDL layer. Numerical results are presented to clearly illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.
Perfectly matched layers are employed in time harmonic analysis of dam-foundation systems. The Lysmer boundary condition at the truncation boundary of the PML region has been incorporated in the formulation of the dam-foundation FE model (including PML). The PML medium is defined in a way that the formulation of the system can be transformed into time domain. Numerical experiments show that applying Lysmer boundary conditions at the truncation boundary of the PML area reduces the computational cost and make the PML approach a more efficient technique for the analysis of dam-foundation systems.

The method of Rankine source distribution is emerging as a powerful yet simple alternative for the solution of complicated free surface problems. But it has been uncertain whether the radiation condition could be satisfied exactly by distributing the simple sources on the free surface only. In this paper, it is proved rigorously that the Rankine sources, whose intensities are varying sinusoidally along the axis satisfying the free surface boundary condition, generate the radiation waves both in the infinite and finite-depth flows. A formula is derived to give the upper and lower bounds of the errors in the induced velocity computation that will be introduced by truncating the extent of source distribution on the free surface. Since the truncation is inevitable in the numerical analysis, this formula may be used as a criterion to limit the position of the field points, where velocity computation is made, away from the truncation boundary. A typical analysis shows that the maximum error will be 3.4 percent of the exact induced velocity when the field point is on the free surface two wave lengths away from the truncation boundary.
In Fourier magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), the number of phase encoded signals is often reduced to minimize the duration of the studies and maintain adequate signal-to-noise ratio. However, this results in the well-known truncation artifact, whose effect manifests itself as blurring and ringing in the image domain. In this paper, we propose a new regularization method in the context of a Bayesian framework to reduce truncation artifact. Since the truncation artifact appears in t도 phase direction only, the use of conventional piecewise-smoothness constraints with symmetric neighbors may result in the loss of small details and soft edge structures in the read direction. Here, we propose more elaborate forms of constraints than the conventional piecewise-smoothness constraints, which can capture actual spatial information about the MR images. Our experimental results indicate that the proposed method not only reduces the truncation artifact, but also improves tissue regularity and boundary definition without oversmoothing soft edge regions.
This paper shows the use of wavelet transformation combined with inverse acoustics to reconstruct the surface velocity of a noise source. This approach uses the boundary element analysis based on the measured sound pressure at a set of field points, the Helmholtz integral equations and wavelet transformation for reconstructing the normal surface velocity field. The reconstructed field can be diverged due to the small measurement errors in the case of nearfield acoustic holography (NAH) using an inverse boundary element method. In order to avoid this instability in the inverse problem, the reconstruction process should include some form of regularization for enhancing the resolution of source images. The usual method of regularization has been the truncation of wave vectors associated with small singular values, although the order of an optimal truncation is difficult to determine. In this paper, a wavelet transformation is applied to reduce the computation time for inverse acoustics and to enhance the reconstructed vibration field. The computational speed-up is achieved, with solution time being reduced to $14.5\%$.
Digital holographic reconstruction method [W. A. Veronesi, et al, 1989, JASA, Vol. 85, pp. 588∼598] reconstructs a whole sound field by using measured sound pressure. This paper reports numerical errors of the method that occur at specific frequencies. The errors occur due to the truncation errors included in the calculation of transfer matrixes. The frequencies of the errors depend on the size of boundary element surfaces. Moreover, a modified calculation technique is proposed in the paper. The technique prevents the truncation errors by employing an indirect calculation procedure.
The PML developed for the radio wave propagation is a powerful numerical domain truncation technique. We perform an analytic study on the reflection from the PML inserted in the ocean bottom. In the ocean bottom, we show the PML to have the improved performance but simultaneously the degeneration below the critical angle of the fast ocean bottom. The degeneration of the PML can be simply relaxed by stretching the thickness of the PML or putting the attenuation coefficient to the ocean bottom. As a better solution, we propose the improved truncation technique based on the PML and the non-local boundary condition. Finally, we apply the PML to the acoustic wave propagation using split-step Pade PE solver. For the problems of the ocean waveguide, the numerical efficiency of the PML is examined and the usefulness of the PML is confirmed.
A boundary control method that controls interior state by actively controlling the boundary conditions in boundary value problems is proposed for the vibration control of flexible beam by using piezoelectric actuators. The governing equations are derived based on the Euler beam theory and the reduced order model is obtained by modal truncation. The spillover effects caused by the uncontrolled high frequency modes are analyzed and the method selecting a suitable sensor location is also proposed. The lag compensator in digital form is realized by using a microcomputer and its peripheral devices. The efficiency of the proposed control scheme is demonstrated experimentally and compared with the simulation results.
