Mechanical properties of woods are easily affected by the differences of site environment such as soil and climate changes. In this study, the relationship between mechanical properties and growth factors for Cryptomeria japonica stands in Jeollanam-do Province, Gyeongsangnam-do Province and Je-ju island was analyzed. From these plot data, bending strength, compressive strength, and shear strength were analyzed by Duncan's new multiple range test. The results of Duncan's new multiple range test analysis indicated that bending strength, compression strength, and shear strength were positively related to tree mean height, and stem number per ha, respectively, while they were inversely proportional to DBH (diameter at breast height), elevation, and soil drainage. As a result of this study, there are high correlations between mechanical properties of wood and stand characteristics of Cryptomeria japonica by the region, this findings are very useful to apply the silvicultural treatment system to produce high quality timber as a basic data on this species (distributed in southern region of Korea).

The current study was performed to clarify the pupation disorder symptoms in silkworm which herbicide, molinate has been regarded as a causal origin. Molinate residues in mulberry leaves was monitored in major rearing area of silkworm; Yeacheon, Sangju and Namwon. Detected range of the molinate in mulberry leaves was 0.002 to 0.013 mg/kg and detection frequency was 30.0 to 81.8%. Molinate concentration in the air of mulberry tree growing area was $0.004\;{\mu}g/m^3$. Water diluted solution of molinate at the concentration of 1, 10, 100 mg/l gave no abnormal symptoms in silkworm irrespective of spraying to silkworm or spiking to diet. Exposing the silkworm to the air containing 250, 2,500, and $10,000\;{\mu}g/m^3$ also revealed no abnormal symptom. These results illustrated that the abnormal growth of silkworm encountered in the field was not caused by pesticide contamination.
Many farmers have been seeking alternatives to chemical fertilizer for successful organic fruit production. This experiment was carried out to investigate the replaceability of chemical fertilizer by cover crop and slurry composting biofiltration (SCB) liquid manure (LM) application in pear orchard. Three treatments were contained in this experiment; cover crop only and cover crop + LM treatment, and control (chemical fertilizer application). Dry weight and mineral contents of gramineous cover crops were significantly increased in LM-combined treatments than that of leguminous species. Bulk density of soil was decreased in rye + LM and hairy vetch + LM treatments, compared with each cover crop treatment. Soil pH was lowest in fertilizer treatment and soil nitrate content became similar between treatments after rainy season. Available soil phosphate was lower in cover crop and cover crop + LM treatmemts than control, but exchangeable Mg was higher. The mineral content and net assimilation rate of leaves showed no difference between the treatments. As a result, it is suggested that the application of SCB liquid manure in pear orchard managed by cover crops is desirable to maintain the productivity by improving soil physical properties and potential nutrient recovery.
Quercus gilva Blume is an evergreen-leaved tree that belongs to Facaceae and grows in tropical and warm-temperate regions, such as Japan, Taiwan, China and Korea. This study was carried out to analyze the distribution and growth characteristics of Q. gilva in the native range. In Korea, this species was distributed in Jeju Island between 80 and 350 meter above sea level, and mainly in the south-western regions of the island from 100 to 200 meter above sea level. The average height of Q. gilva was $9.8{\pm}1.9$ meter, with most trees 9 and 12 meter tall. The average diameter at breast height was $22.6{\pm}6.8$ centimeter, with the majority between 20 and 30 centimeter. Several coppice shoots ($3.8{\pm}2.1$ pieces) were formed from stumps and inferred by frequent cuttings for use. Almost Q. gilva individuals(96.2%) were covered with kinds of vines(18 species), and evergreen Trachelospermim asiaticum (Siebold et Zucc.) Nakai was major species. The analysis of damage of vines revealed that the most dead branches were found with 9 to 12 meter height of Q. gilva, and the more vines attached, the larger damage to Q. gilva individuals. A continuous monitoring and investigation would be required to preserve this species in their habitats.
It is one of the important tasks to accurately grasp features of the devastated land to revegetate the denuded, volcanic land. In the present report three factors of such features were discussed : the ash fall phenomenon the overflow of surface water, and the generation of sulfurous acid gas, which are all usual, harmful factors for the successful growth of introduced plants to such area. In addition, it is indicated that to overcome those harmful factors some artificial tools should be applied in such regions before the introduction of pioneer tree species such as Pinus thunbergii and etc. In our three-year pilot study it is found out that the use of mulching sheets developed originally by research members combined together with symbiotic microorganisms such as Pisolithus tinctorus Coker et Couch f. tinctorius was very effective. Experimental plots surveyed throughly in Mt. Fugendake in Nagasaki Prefecture and Mt. Sakurajima in Kagoshima Prefecture showed successful revegetation as models. Finally, for the revegetation of the denuded, volcanic land it is recommended that mulching sheets should be used together with symbiotic microorganisms.
One-year-old cottonwood (Populus deltoides Bartr.) clones, which were classified as sensitive or tolerant, were exposed to 150 n1/1 ozone (O$_3$) over 8 days for 8 hours each day under glass chamber conditions with natural sunlight. The leaves of the sensitive clone had black stipple and bifacial necrosis after $O_3$ treatment. Photosynthesis and stomatal conductance were measured before, during, and after the $O_3$ treatment. The photosynthetic rates due to $O_3$ treatment were decreased 51 percent and 34 percent on the sensitive and tolerant clone, respectively. The stomatal conductance of the sensitive clone was more than 40 percent higher than that of the tolerant clone regardless of the $O_3$ treatment. As light intensity increased, the $O_3$ effect on photosynthesis was clear. Compared to the previous growth chamber studies, our natural light exposure system was able to maintain a stable photosynthetic responses of the control treatment throughout the fumigation period. In addition, changes in assimilation versus intercellular $CO_2$ concentration (A/C curves) showed that $O_3$ decreased the slope and asymptote of the curves for the sensitive clone. This indicates that $O_3$ decreases the biochemical capacity of photosynthesis on the sensitive clone. Chlorophyll contents and fluorescence of the two clones were analyzed to examine the $O_3$ effects on photosystem 11, but $O_3$ did not impact these variables on either clone. Although the tolerant clone did not show any foliar injury, we could not find any ecophysiological defensive responses to $O_3$ treated. Stomatal conductance of the tolerant clone was originally much lower than that of the sensitive one. Thus, the mechanisms of the tolerant clone in this system are to narrowly open stomata and efficiently maintain photosynthesis with a more durable biochemical apparatus of photosynthesis under $O_3$ stress. The sensitive clone has higher photosynthetic capacity and more efficient light reaction activity than the tolerant one under charcoal filtered condition, but is not as resilient under stress.
The present study was conducted to characterize physiological responses of aerial part according to soil water stresses in 'Mihong' peach trees. Discolorations, wilting and falling of leaves were observed in chronological order as response for waterlogging and no irrigation and the phenomena started from basal to end of shoots. Shoot growth in elongation and thickness decreased and fallen leaves were severe in waterlogged trees. Function of water uptake by roots and photosynthesis and leaf respiration decreased by waterlogging. Leaf chlorophyll contents decreased in both treatments. In waterlogging treatment, decrease of chlorophyll was observed in normal leaves with waterlogging using light microscopy. Starch content was lower in both treatment and carbohydrate content was lower in root with waterlogging. These results demonstrated that waterlogging weakened the function of soil water uptake and movement and decreased photosynthesis and fallen leaves. Finally the peach trees would wither or suffer low temperature damage through the shortage of reserve accumulations. We suggested that waterlogging damage in peach trees could be reduced to take notice of irrigation and install drainage facility to improve soil condition.
In other previous in vitro tests, the hyphal growth of Raffaelea quercivorus was inhibited by the treatments of various concentration of nano-silver. In this field tests, treatment of different concentrations of nano-silver to oak trees in Cheolwon and Hongcheon sites showed the inhibition effects against wilt disease caused by Raffaelea quercivorus. However, nano-silver-treated oak tree in Chuncheon site showed mild wilt symptoms with no phytotoxicity. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) observation confirmed that the spore and hypha of Raffaelea sp. inside the vessels were damaged by nano-silver. This result indicates the application of nanosilver is effective for control of Raffaelea quercivorus in the field.

In order to isolate compost-promoting bacteria with high activity of cellulase and xylanase, spent mushroom substrates with sawdust were collected from mushroom cultivation farm, Jinju, Gyeongnam in Korea. Among of the isolates, one strain, designated CA105 was selected by agar diffusion method. The strain CA105 was identified as members of the Bacillus subtilis by biochemical characteristics using VITEK 2 system. Comparative 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that isolate CA105 formed a distinct phylogenetic tree within the genus Bacillus and was most closely related to Bacillus subtilis with 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity of 98.9%. On the basis of its physiological properties, biochemical characteristics and phylogenetic distinctiveness, isolate CA105 was classified within the genus Bacillus subtilis, for which the name Bacillus subtilis CA105 is proposed. The cellulase and xylanase activity of B. subtilis CA105 was slightly increased according to bacterial population from exponential phase to stationary phase in growth curve for Bacillus sp. CA105.
For this analysis, canopies of slender-spindle 'Hongro'/M9 apple trees were divided into 4 positions: upper, lower, exterior, and interior parts. The photosynthetic rate was highest in the external part of the upper canopy of the tree, where it was 4.5 times higher than in the internal part of the lower canopy. This difference was closely associated with differences in light penetration based on canopy position. Analysis of leaf growth characteristics showed that the leaves situated in the internal part of the canopy were larger and thinner than those in the external part of the canopy. The difference in leaf thickness was mainly due to thickness of the primary layer of palisade tissues (68.5 and $110.3{\mu}m$ for internal and external leaves, respectively). Fruit weight and quality were closely related to the extent of light penetration. Fruit weight, soluble solid content, and red skin color were higher in the fruits from the external part of the canopy. Thus, fruit maturity was delayed in the internal part of canopy. The fruit skin and wax layer were thicker in fruits from the internal canopy than in those from the external canopy. Therefore, our results indicate a need for improved light penetration in internal parts of the canopy and for split harvesting depending on maturity at different canopy positions.
