노거수의 가치 평가 연구 - 경주 계림숲 느티나무를 대상으로 - (A Value Evaluation Research of the Old-growth and Giant Tree - Focus on Gyeongju Gyerim's Zelkova Serrata -)

  • 노거수는 높은 가치를 지니고 있는 재생불능자원이므로 과학적이고 합리적인 가치 평가는 노거수의 보존관리에 있어 매우 중요하다. 그러나 현재 노거수의 가치 평가에 관한 연구와 권위 있는 평가 지표는 매우 부족한 실정이다. 본 연구는 노거수의 특수성을 감안한 가치 요인을 분석하여 합리적인 평가 지표를 선정하고 현실 적용 가능한 가치 평가 모형을 구축하는데 목적이 있다. 노거수의 평가 지표는 경제가치, 과학연구가치, 생태가치, 경관가치, 사회공익가치로 구분된다. 노거수의 가치에 대한 중요 인자는 인문역사, 성장장소, 수목상태, 수형, 수세, 수종, 수관, 보호등급, 성장환경 등 이다. 계층분석법(AHP)을 이용하여 가치 평가 산식을 작성하고 경주의 세계문화유산인 계림숲 내에 위치한 느티나무의 가치 평가를 실시하였다. 느티나무의 가치는 평가결과 491,503,300원으로 추정된다. 연구 결과는 노거수의 가치 감정과 손실 보상에 중요한 자료가 되며 노거수에 대한 보호 의식을 향상시킬 수 있다.

백두대간 마루금일대 소나무의 연륜생장과 기후와의 관계 (Relationships between Climate and Tree-Rings of Pinus densiflora in the Ridges of the Baekdudaegan, Korea)

  • 백두대간의 마루금일대에 자라는 소나무 연륜생장과 기후와의 관계를 알아보기 위하여 21개 지역에서 48본 시료의 연륜을 분석하였다. 모든 지역의 소나무 연륜패턴이 서로 크로스데이팅 되어 우리나라 소나무의 생장이 기후에 크게 영향을 받는다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 이들 연륜연대기는 3개의 군집으로 구분할 수 있었는데, 지역적으로 그리고 해발 고도에 따라 분류되지 않아 백두대간에 분포하는 소나무의 연륜생장은 지역이나 고도보다는 미소 (microsite) 생육환경에 따른 생장량의 대소에 따라 분류되는 것을 알 수 있었다. 백두대간 소나무의 연륜생장과 기후(월 강수량과 월 평균기온)와의 관계를 상관계수로 분석한 결과, 백두대간 소나무의 연륜생장은 강수보다는 기온에 영향을 많이 받으며, 생장이 양호한 군집이 기후의 영향을 덜 받는 것으로 나타났다.

Impact of Pruning Intensity on Tree Growth and Closure of Pruning Wounds of Pinus strobus L. and Acer palmatum Thunb.

  • The objective of this study was to examine the impact of pruning intensity on the vigor and cambial growth of the treated trees, and on the closure of pruning wounds for one year after pruning treatment. Two tree species, Pinus strobus and Acer palmatum, planted broadly in the urban forest of Korea were selected for the experiment. Intensity of pruning, which was estimated by proportion of removed branches, was categorized into five levels with about 10% intervals from lowest 8% up to 46%. Following parameters were examined; cambial electrical resistance (CER) and the cambial growth of trunk at 30 cm above the ground for the years before and after pruning, the cambial growth of stem at 1.5 cm above the branch bark ridge (BBR) of the pruned branch, and closure of pruning wound for one year after pruning. Tree vigor inferred from CER had a tendency to be weakened as pruning intensity increased in P. strobus, while that of A. palmatum was not affected. The trunk growth decreased significantly when the pruning intensity was higher than 30% in both species. The closure of individual pruning wound was related more to the cambial growth of stem at 1.5 cm above BBR than to the pruning intensity. Comparing the closure rate of pruning wound for one year, P. strobus with 72.1% was faster than A. palmatum with 39.3%, which corresponded with the rate of cambial growth of the two species.

Effects of atmospheric environmental changes on annual ring growth of Cryptomeria japonica in Southern Korea

  • Annual ring formation is considered a source of information to investigate the effects of environmental changes caused by temperature, air pollution, and acid rain on tree growth. A comparative investigation of annual ring growth of Cryptomeria japonica in relation to environmental changes was conducted at two sites in southern Korea (Haenam and Jangseong). Three wood disks from each site were collected from stems at breast height and annual ring growth was analyzed. Annual ring area at two sites increased over time (p > 0.05). Tree ring growth rate in Jangseong was higher than that in Haenam. Annual ring area increment in Jangseong was more strongly correlated with environmental variables than that in Haenam; annual ring growth increased with increasing temperature (p < 0.01) and a positive effect of $NO_2$ concentration on annual ring area (p < 0.05) could be attributed to nitrogen deposition in Jangseong. The correlation of annual ring growth increased with decreasing $SO_2$ and $CO_2$ concentrations (p < 0.01) in Jangseong. Variation in annual growth rings in Jangseong could be associated with temperature changes and N deposition. In Haenam, annual ring growth was correlated with $SO_2$ concentration (p < 0.01), and there was a negative relationship between precipitation pH and annual ring area (p < 0.01) which may reflect changes in nutrient cycles due to the acid rain. Therefore, the combined effects of increased $CO_2$, N deposition, and temperature on tree ring growth in Jangseong may be linked to soil acidification in this forest ecosystem. The interactions between air pollution ($SO_2$) and precipitation pH in Haenam may affect tree growth and may change nutrient cycles in this site. These results suggested that annual tree ring growth in Jangseong was more correlated with environmental variables than that in Haenam. However, the further growth of C. japonica forest at two sites is at risk from the long-term effects of acid deposition from fossil fuel combustion.

Estimation of the Effects of Air Pollutants on Tree Ring Growth in Black Pines (Pinus thunbergii)

  • Tree-ring width analysis has been used to assess the effects of air pollution on tree growth around industrial complexes. Our study was conducted to elucidate the effect of air pollutants on annual ring growth in black pines (Pinus thunbergii) of age 41$\sim$48 years around Ulsan Metropolitan City. The growth data were analyzed by multiple regression and the results are as follows: 1. The annual ring increment of black pines increased with tree age until age 40 years and then decreased gradually after age 40 years. 2. The increment of annual ring width of black pines was affected more by precipitation and evapotranspiration than air temperature. An annual ring decline appeared in the years 1968$\sim$1983, when annual ring indices below zero were observed. Decreased annual ring growth during this period may have been due to air pollution. 3. The heavy metal with the strongest effect on annual ring growth of black pines in the experimental stand was lead (Pb). The concentration of lead in the stand was estimated as over 6 ppm. 4. The technique of tree-ring width analysis may be useful for estimation of the extent of pollution in forest areas near industrial complexes.

Experimental Studies on the Effects of Ozone on Growth and Photosynthetic Activity of Japanese Forest Tree Species

  • Ozone ($O_3$) is a main component of photochemical oxidants, and a phytotoxic anthropogenic air pollutant. In North America and Europe, the current concentration of $O_3$ has been shown to have significant adverse effects on vegetation. In this review, we summarize the experimental studies on the effects of $O_3$ on the growth and photosynthetic activity of Japanese forest tree species to understand the present knowledge and provide sound basis for future research toward the assessment of $O_3$ impacts on Japanese forest ecosystem. Since the 1990s, several Japanese researchers have conducted the experimental studies on the effects of ambient levels of $O_3$ on growth and physiological functions such as net photosynthesis of Japanese forest tree species. Although the sensitivity to $O_3$ of whole-plant growth is quite different among the species, it was suggested that the current ambient levels of $O_3$ in Japan are high enough to adversely affect growth and photosynthetic activity of Japanese forest tree species classified into high $O_3$ sensitivity group such as Japanese beech. The N load to soil has been shown to reduce the sensitivity to $O_3$ of Japanese larch and increase that of Japanese beech. To establish the critical level of $O_3$ for protecting Japanese forest tree species, therefore, it is necessary to take into account the N deposition from the atmosphere. There is little information on the combined effects of $O_3$ and other environmental factors such as elevated $CO_2$ and drought on growth and physiological functions of Japanese forest tree species. Therefore, it is necessary to promote the experimental study and accumulate the information on the combined effects of $O_3$ and any other abiotic environmental factors on Japanese forest tree species.

Comparative Genome-Scale Expression Analysis of Growth Phase-dependent Genes in Wild Type and rpoS Mutant of Escherichia coli

  • Numerous genes of Escherichia coli have been shown to growth phase-dependent expression throughout growth. The global patterns of growth phase-dependent gene expression of E. coli throughout growth using oligonucleotide microarrays containing a nearly complete set of 4,289 annotated open reading frames. To determine the change of gene expression throughout growth, we compared RNAs taken from timecourses with common reference RNA, which is combined with equal amount of RNA pooled from each time point. The hierarchical clustering of the conditions in accordance with timecourse expression revealed that growth phases were clustered into four classes, consistent with known physiological growth status. We analyzed the differences of expression levels at genome level in both exponential and stationary growth phase cultures. Statistical analysis showed that 213 genes are shown to, growth phase-dependent expression. We also analyzed the expression of 256 known operons and 208 regulatory genes. To assess the global impact of RpoS, we identified 193 genes coregulated with rpoS and their expression levels were examined in the isogenic rpoS mutant. The results revealed that 99 of 193 were novel RpoS-dependent stationary phase-induced genes and the majority of those are functionally unknown. Our data provide that global changes and adjustments of gene expression are coordinately regulated by growth transition in E. coli.

주간 절단시기 및 생장조절제를 이용한 '후지'/M9 사과나무 수관 상단부 생장조절 (Growth Control of Upper Part in 'Fuji'/M.9 Apple Tree Canopy by Cutting Time of Trunk and Plant Growth Regulators)

  • BACKGROUND: The vigorous shoot growth in upper part of apple tree canopy leads to poor fruit quality and flower bud formation in lower part of canopy. So, this study was conducted to develop the proper control method about the shoot growth in upper part of apple tree canopy. METHODS AND RESULTS: Trunks of 'Fuji'/M9 apple trees were cut (back pruned) to 2.5 m in tree height on 11 February (dormant) or 12 April (full bloom). Naphthalene acetic acid (NAA) was applied at 2.0% to cut surface when trunk was pruned. Prohexadione-calcium (Pro-Ca) was sprayed at 250 mg/L above 2.0 m in tree height at 23 April (petal fall). The NAA or Pro-Ca application after trunk was pruned at dormant (TR-2 and TR-3) significantly reduced shoot growth in upper part of canopy compared with the control (tree was only pruned at dormant, TR-1), but the percent of shoots showing the secondary growth of TR-3 was higher over 2 times than that of TR-2. The reduction of shoot growth in upper part of canopy by TR-2 and TR-3 increased the fruit red color from the lower part in the treating year and blooming of the lower part in the following year. CONCLUSION: Applying 2.0% NAA to cut surface of pruned apple trunk at dormant was the most effective way for stabilization of the tree vigor in upper part of the canopy in a high density apple orchard.

사실적인 게임 배경 제작을 위한 나무 성장 모델 설계 (Tree Growth Model Design for Realistic Game Landscape Production)

  • 본 연구에서는 게임의 실외 지형을 구성하는 많은 수의 다양한 나무를 효율적이고 자연스럽게 표현하기 위한 나무 성장 모델을 설계한다. 제안하는 나무 성장 모델은 (1) 다양한 종류의 나무를 보다 직관적이면서 자연스럽고 효율적으로 모델링하기 위한 성장 볼륨 및 약수 함수의 합성 곱 기반의 나무 모델링 방법, (2) 복잡한 구조의 다수 나무들의 실시간 처리를 위하여 인스턴싱 기반의 가지의 세분화 단계를 통한 렌더링 방법, 그리고 (3) 이를 조합하여 게임 배경을 효율적으로 구축하는 방법으로 구성된 나무 성장 모델이다. 제안한 나무 성장 모델을 통하여 자연스럽고 다양한 나무의 성장과 이를 통한 자연스러운 게임 배경의 구축 가능성 및 실시간 처리의 효율성을 실험을 통해 확인한다.

에폭시 절연의 전기적 트리잉에 관한 표면 개질된 나노알루미나의 영향 (The Influence of Surface Modified Nano Alumina for Electrical Treeing in Epoxy Insulation)

  • This paper presents the results of a study on the effect of surface modified alumina nanocomposites on electrical tree growth in epoxy insulation. Treeing experiments were conducted at a fixde AC voltage (500kV/mm, 10kV/60Hz)on unfilled epoxy sample as well as epoxy nanocomposites of 4 types with different loading and surface modified GDE gram. Time for tree growth as well as tree propagation length were studied. The results show that there is a significant improvement tree propagation time compare unfilled epoxy to epoxy nano alumina composites. Different tree propagation shapes as well as slower tree growth with 4 types nano alumina composites were observed.
