The KTX station is one of special generators that produce a lot of trips caused by special land use such as university, airport, and super shopping mall. Special generators need special attention in developing travel demand models since the standard trip generation and distribution model in the conventional four-step approach do not provide reliable estimates of their travel patterns. New modeling approach, activity-based model, considering travel behavior of person, seem to be more appropriate for those special generators. Thus, this study introduces a spatial-temporal activity-based approach and how activity-based approach can be applied to estimation of travel demand at KTX stations.
Rail transport has grown over the Past decades, and rail networks have highly concentrated in urban area, and it is possible for rail passengers to choose a route anions a number of alternative routes. Analysis of factors influencing the choice of route, are required to estimate the rail travel demand of each route. In this paper, we describes route choice model for the transit assignment and characteristics of the route choice(i.e., by relative travel time and fares), and attempts to estimate travel demand of new rail transit based on the slated preference(SP) survey data of Nanko Porttown, which is located in Osaka, Japan.
The submerged floating tunnel (SFT) infrastructure has been regarded as an emerging technology that efficiently and safely connects land and islands. The SFT route problem is an essential part of the SFT planning and design phase, with significant impacts on the surrounding environment. This study aims to develop an optimization model considering transportation and structure factors. The SFT routing problem was optimized based on two objective functions, i.e., minimizing total travel time and cumulative strains, using NSGA-II. The proposed model was applied to the section from Mokpo to Jeju Island using road network and wave observation data. As a result of the proposed model, a Pareto optimum curve was obtained, showing a negative correlation between the total travel time and cumulative strain. Based on the inflection points on the Pareto optimum curve, four optimal SFT routes were selected and compared to identify the pros and cons. The travel time savings of the four selected alternatives were estimated to range from 9.9% to 10.5% compared to the non-implemented scenario. In terms of demand, there was a substantial shift in the number of travel and freight trips from airways to railways and roadways. Cumulative strain, calculated based on SFT distance, support structure, and wave energy, was found to be low when the route passed through small islands. The proposed model helps decision-making in the planning and design phases of SFT projects, ultimately contributing to the progress of a safe, efficient, and sustainable SFT infrastructure.
In this study, a model of compensation and amendment of forecasted travel demand was developed to calculate the range of values depends on the changes in the risk factors, selecting factors that might affect traffic demand changes among risk factors. Selected factors are as follows: influenced area population, the number of registrated vehicle per person, ratio of service industry workers, and city intervals. Then this model is applied to six routes of expressway and the calculated value were compensated with error rate being reflected on each quartile value with respect to influenced area population (200,000 people standards). Result from appling developed model to Cheongwon-Sangju expressway suggests that the model could compensate the error rate by more than 50%, which in turn validate the effectiveness of the model developed. Some limitations and future research agenda have also been identified.
This research suggested the traffic signal timing calculation model for signal intersections based on sectional travel time. A detection system that collects sectional travel time data such as Urban Transport Information System(UTIS) is applied. This research developed the model to calculate saturation flow rate and demand volume from travel time information using a deterministic delay model. Moreover, this model could determine the traffic signal timings to minimize a delay based on Webster model using traffic demand volume. In micro simulation analysis using VISSIM and its API ComInterface, it checked the saturation conditions and determined the traffic signal timings to minimize the intersection delay. Recently, sectional vehicle detection systems are being installed in various projects, such as Urban Transportation Information System(UTIS) and Advanced Transportation Management System(ATMS) in Korea. This research has important contribution to apply the traffic information system to traffic signal operation sector.
The network equilibrium theory is to estimate the travel choices on a transportation network when the resulting travel times and costs are one basis for the choices. Increasing use of this principle on travel assignment problem lead to develop the combined choice models including not only travel options such as mode and route, but location options like trip distribution problems. This paper, first, reviews earlier developments of variable demand network equilibrium models, combined modeles of trip distribution and assignment, and entropy constrained combined models. Then various model structures of combining travel choice models based on network equilibrium theory and entropy constraints are discussed.

In Space Syntax, the greater the degree of integration between separate links, the greater the links' accessibility from the target network. As such, planning pedestrian walks so that links with high degrees of integration are connected, or else inducing high integration value land use are both valid options. The travel distribution model reflects how walking demand, or more specifically, the pedestrian, partakes in route choosing behavior that minimizes select criteria, notably level of discomfort, as measured using travel distance and time. The model thus demonstrates travel patterns associated with demand pertaining to minimization of discomfort experienced by the pedestrian. This research introduces a method that integrates Space Syntax and the pedestrian travel distribution model. The integrated model will determine whether regions with high degrees of integration are actually being used as pivots for pedestrian demand movement, as well as to explain whether the degree of integration is sustained at an appropriate level while considering actual movement demand. As a means to develop the integrated model, a method that combines display of the visibility of the space syntax network and road-divided links is proposed. The pedestrian travel distribution model also includes an alternative path finding mechanism between origin and destination, which allows for uniform allocation of demand.

The purpose of this study is to anticipate the air travel demands over the period of 164 months, from January 1997 to August 2010 using ARIMA-Intervention modeling on the selected sample data. The sample data is composed of the number of the passengers who in the domestic route for Jeju route. In the analysis work of this study, the past events which are assumed to have affected the demands for the air travel routes to Jeju in different periods were used as the intervention variables. The impacts of such variables were reflected in the presupposed demand. The intervention variables used in this study are, respectively, the World Cup event in 2002 (from May to June), 2003 SARS outbreak (from April to May), Tsunami in January 2005, and the influenza outbreak from October to December 2009. The result of the above mentioned analysis revealed that the negative intervention events, like a global outbreak of an epidemic did have negative impact on the air travel demands in a risk aversion by the users of the aviation services. However, in case of the negative intervention events in limited area, where there are possible substituting destinations for the tourists, the impact was positive in terms of the air travel demands for substituting destinations due to the rational expectation of the users as they searched for other options. Also in this study, it was discovered that there is not a binding correlation between a nation wide mega-event, such as the World Cup games in 2002, and the increased air travel demands over a short-term period.

Investment scenarios in the transportation network design problem usually contain installation or expansion of multi-mode transportation links. When one applies the mode choice analysis and traffic assignment sequentially for each investment scenario, it is possible that the travel impedance used in the mode choice analysis is different from the user equilibrium cost of the traffic assignment step. Therefore, to estimate the travel impedance and mode choice accurately, one needs to develop a combined model for the mode choice and traffic assignment. In this paper, we derive the inverse demand and the excess demand functions for the multi-mode multinomial logit mode choice function and develop a combined model for the multi-mode variable demand traffic assignment problem. Using data from the regional O/D and network data provided by the KTDB, we compared the performance of the partial linearization algorithm with the Frank-Wolfe algorithm applied to the excess demand model and with the sequential heuristic procedures.
The vehicle travel time between the demand points in downtown area is greatly influenced by complex road condition and traffic situation that change real time to various external environments. Most of research in the vehicle routing problems compose vehicle routes only considering travel distance and average vehicle speed between the demand points, however did not consider dynamic external environments such as traffic situation by service time zones. A realistic vehicle routing problem which considers traffic situation of smooth, delaying, and stagnating by three service time zones such as going to work, afternoon, and going home was suggested in this study. A mathematical programming model was suggested and it gives an optimal solution when using ILOG CPLEX. A hybrid genetic algorithm was also suggested to chooses a vehicle route considering traffic situation to minimize the total travel time. By comparing the result considering the traffic situation, the suggested algorithm gives better solution than existing algorithms.
