  • This study was conducted to effect promotion of fall potato growth in the place which green manual crops had been previously cultivated, crushed and tilled and polyethylene transparent vinyl had been mulched from Aug. 5 to Aug. 29 in 1997. The maximum temperature of below-ground at the depth of 10cm was $42^{\circ}C$ during the mulching period, and the pH and the organic compound content of soil was very increased by the cultivation of green manual crops and the mulching of polyethylene transparent vinyl. The total yields of green manual crops which had been previously cultivated were as the following orders; the hybrid of sudan grass, soybean, alfalfa, otherwise, fresh weight of stems and the tuber yield of fall potato were significantly affected in the plot of soybean + fall potato after the soil solarization with the mulching. As these results, it was possible to improve crops growth and to sterilize soil by the mulching treatment of polyethylene vinyl after cultivation of green manual crops during the high temperature of the summer season.

  • This study was conducted to produce effectively more leaves of Angelica acutiloba through year-round production system by using various mulching materials. Soil temperature by covering treatment was the highest in P.E.(Polyethylene Film) mulching and followed by rice straw mulching, especially showing highest temperature in Tr. PE(Transparent Polyethylene Film) from April through May. Water content of soil was higher in P.E. mulching than in non-mulching. Leaf and stem production of Angelica acutiloba through year-round production showed the highest in PE mulching also root production of Angelica acutiloba showed the highest in P.E. mulching. These results suggest that leaf and stem production of Angelica acutiloba can be maximized through P.E. mulching cultivation system.

  • Thirty-nine out of eighty-five barley varieties/strains survived until heading stage in the saline experimental field $(0.03-0.05\%\;salt)$ and they were used for pollen study. Light and scanning electron microscopic observations revealed two distinctive types of barley pollens: one transparent and small in size and the other dark and larger. In addition, both types of pollens were stained with Alexander's stain and it was found that the smaller and transparent pollen was cytoplasm-devoid (CD) while the larger pollen was cytoplasm-rich (CR). Sixteen out of 39 barley varieties/lines grown in the saline soil had CR pollens, which were rarely observed in the barley plants grown in the non-saline soil. Moreover, it was observed that salt stress severely reduced seed setting in the varieties having degenerated pollens. These results suggest that salt stress affects the fertility of barley pollen. The sterile pollen was undersized and lack of cytoplasm probably due to abortion. Furthermore, a varietal difference existed in the response of pollen development to salt stress.

  • In this study, two different types of dredged fill injection methods are introduced and filling experiments were conducted to analyze the impact of each technique to the distribution and deposition of dredged soil fill and how it influence the final tube shape. Two transparent plastic tubes were fabricated to observe the deposition behavior of the deposited fill material. Both tubes measured 4.0 meters in length (L) and has vinyl tube diameters (D) of 0.5m and 0.7m. T-type and I-type inlet system are also introduced in this paper. The influence of this inlet systems to the distribution and deposition behavior of dredged soil fill inside the vinyl tubes were observed during the experiment. After the sedimentation of the slurry mixture, the water on top of the soil sediments are removed and the slurry mixture was re-injected into the vinyl tube, this process was carried out repeatedly. The shape changes of the vinyl tube, e.g. the changes in both tube height and width, are constantly monitored after each slurry injection and water draining phases. Crater formation was observed in the case of I-Type inlet system and a non-uniform sediment distribution occurred. For the diffusion deposit of soil particles to long distance are minimal shape technique using the T-Type inlet system. Therefore the undrain filling height ratio ($H/D_0$) was found to be around 0.54 to 0.64 and the horizontal strain ratio ($W/D_0$) ranges from 1.45 to 1.54. The filling soil height is proportional to dredged-material filling phases, but, horizontal strain ratio is constant or inversely reduced so that the center of tube body is raised in the upward direction.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of mulching material and planting density on growth and bulb development of shallot. The transparent PE film was better than black PE film as a mulching material for the overwintering shallot crop. Transparent PE film mulching promoted plant growth and increased marketable yield by 21% as compared with that of the black PE film-mulched crop. However, the bulb size was not significantly affected by the type of mulching film. The height and width of ridge and planting density significantly affected the growth and bulb yield of the moisture sensitive shallot. Bulb yield of the shallot planted in five rows in 120 cm wide ridges (20,833 plants per 10 a) was 1,332 kg per 10 a, which was 1.7 times as high as that by the crop grown in three rows in 120 cm wide ridges (12,500 plants per 10 a). In conclusion, the shallot crop is recommended to be cultivated in five rows in 120 cm ridges mulched with the transparent PE film.

  • Polyethylene mulches have been used for weed control in vegetable production in Korea. One of the additional benefits associated with polyethylene mulches is soil warming. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of colored mulches on soil temperature change and Chinese cabbage yield. Mulch treatments were green (GV), black (BV), transparent (TV), and non-mulched (NM) soil. The highest soil-warming effect occurred under green mulch, and the lowest effect was found under black mulch. Daily mean values of soil temperature (10 cm depth) under GV were $2^{\circ}C$ higher than in NM soil. At midday (16:00), mean soil temperature was higher by $3.9^{\circ}C$ in GV, $3.1^{\circ}C$ in BV, and $2.1^{\circ}C$ in TV as compared to NM soil. At night (20:00-06:00), there was no significant difference in soil temperature among the treatments of different colored mulch, but soils in the mulch treatments were $2.4^{\circ}C$ higher as compared to NM soil. As compared with NM, the yield of Chinese cabbage under GV, BV, and TV were higher by 6.0, 26.0, and 12.0%, respectively.

  • This study measures the influence of grass cover on water use and shoot growth of apple trees growing under different soil water regimes in temperate climate conditions and evaluates monthly crop coefficients of such conditions during four months of the growing season in 1995. To do so, double pot lysimeter experiments of 3-year-old Fuji' apple (Males domestica Borkh.) trees under a transparent rain shield were designed and installed. Trees were triplicate under three soil water regimes: (A) drip-irrigation at -50 kPa of soil matric potential (IR50). (B) drip-irrigation at -80 kPa of soil matric potential (IR80), and (C) constant shallow water table at 0.45 m below the soil surface (WT45). In each treatment, two soil surface conditions were tested: the soil surface bare, and covered with turf grasses. Mean monthly water use increased with increasing soil matric potential for drip irrigation and was greatest in the WT45 treatment. Monthly crop coefficients increased linearly in time for drip-irrigated apple trees ($r^2$ values of $0.953^{***}$ for turf grass-covered system and of $0.862^{***}$ for bare surface system), while those obtained in the WT45 treatment fluctuated, Duncan's multiple range tests for shoot growth showed that grass-covered IR50 was most favorable to apple trees. while bare surface waterlogged situation was most adverse at least in part due to a lack of oxygen in the root zone. Mid-season leaf Kjeldahl-N was higher in drip-irrigated apple trees than in WT45 trees, while soil Kjeldahl-N was not different irrespective of treatments.

  • Early, mid, and late maturing soybean varieties were artificially infested with larvae of Delia platura at seeding, and then later development and productivity of soybeans were studied. In addition, in hope to utilize as possible tactics in the management of D. platura in soybeans, cultural factors such as contents of organic matter in soil, soil types, and the use of plastic mulching on the degree of damage to soybean plants by D. platura were examined. Primary leaf damage by the larva delayed the forthcoming vegetative growth but not the blooming which is initiated by the change in day length. Degree of delay in growth was more severe where leaf damage was induced by insect infestation than where artificially excised, apparently owing to simultaneous damage in stems and roots besides primary leaves. Productivity of soybeans also dropped significantly in plants with 25 % or more loss in the primary leaf area by the larva. Both transparent and black plastic mulchings shortened the period from seeding to emergence of soybean thus reducing the chance of possible attack by the larva. Soybean seedlings grown in clay loam or clay were attacked less by the larva than those in other types of soil. High organic matter content in the soil enhanced speed of emergence resulting in less larval damage to the seedling.
