  • Multilayer transparent electrodes, having a much lower electrical resistance than the widely used transparent conducting oxide electrodes, were prepared by using radio frequency magnetron sputtering. The multilayer structure consisted of five layers, indium tin oxided (ITO)/zinc oxide (ZnO)/Ag/zinc oxide (ZnO)/ITO. With about 50 nm thick ITO films, the multilayer showed a high optical transmittance in the visible range of the spectrum and had color neutrality. The electrical and optical properties of ITO/ZnO/Ag/ZnO/ITO multilayer were changed mainly by Ag film properties, which were affected by the deposition process of the upper layer. Especially ZnO layer was improved to adhesion of Ag and ITO. A high quality transparent electrode, having a resistance as low as and a high optical transmittance of 91% at 550 nm, was obtained. It could satisfy the requirement for the flexible OLED and LCD.

  • Transparent conducting oxide (TCO) films have been widely used in optoelectronic devices, such as OLEDs, TFTs, and solar cells. However, thin films of indium tin oxide (ITO) have few disadvantages pertaining to process parameters such as substrate temperature and sputtering power. In this study, we investigated the requirements for using TCO films in silicon-based solar cells and the best alternative TCO materials to improve their efficiency. Moreover, we discussed the current status of high-efficiency solar cells using low-temperature TCO films such as indium zinc oxide and Zr-doped indium oxide.

  • In the fabrication of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), carbon counter electrode has been tested for replacing the platinum counter electrode which has two drawbacks: limited surface area and high material cost. Poor mechanical stability of carbon layer due to weak bonding strength to electrically conductive TCO (transparent conducting oxide) glass substrate is a crucial barrier for practical application of carbon counter electrode. In the present study a carbon counter electrode with high conversion efficiency, comparable to Pt counter electrode, could be fabricated by adaption of a bonding layer between particulate carbon material and TCO substrate.

  • Recently, advances in nano-material researches have opened the door for various transparent conductive materials, which include carbon nanotube, graphene, Ag and Cu nanowire, and printable metal grids. Among them, Ag nanowires are particularly interesting to synthesize because bulk Ag exhibits the highest electrical conductivity among all metals. Here we reviewed recently-published research works introducing various devices from organic light emitting diode to tactile sensing devices, all of which are employing AgNW for a conducting material. They proposed methods to enhance the stretchability and reversibility of the transparent electrodes, and apply them to make various flexible and stretchable electronics. It is expected that Ag nanowires are applicable to a wide range of high-performance, low-cost, stretchable electronic devices.

  • We report flexible, bistable cholesteric displays utilizing polyester (PET) substrates with printed internal black electrodes. The black electrodes consist of carbon ink dispersed in butyl carbitol using a patented roll-to-roll gravure-offset printing. A transparent conducting polymer printed on PET serves as the counter electrode. The electro-optic material is a chiral nematic mixture dispersed in a low-concentration polymer binder. The device can be switched between scattering (black) and reflective (vibrant green) states upon application of an electric pulse. The internal black electrode enhances the contrast of the display and simplifies the roll-to-roll manufacture of flexible displays.

  • Tin doped indium oxide(ITO) films are highly conductive and transparent in the visible region whose property leads to the applications in solar cell, liquid crystal display, thermal heater, and other sensors. This paper investigated ITO films as a transparent conducting films for application of PDP. ITO films were grown on glass substrate by RF magnetron sputtering method. To achieve high transmittance and low resistivity, we examined the various film deposition such as substrate temperature, gas pressure, annealing temperature, and deposition time. We recommend the substrate temperature of $500^{\circ}C$ and post annealing of $200^{\circ}C$ in $O_2$ atmosphere for good conductivity and transmittance. From XRD examination, ITO films showed a preferred(222) orientation. As substrate temperature increased from RT to $500^{\circ}C$, the intensity of the (222) peak increased. The highest peak intensity was observed at a substrate temperature of $500^{\circ}C$. with the optimum growth conditions, ITO films showed resistivity of $1.04{\times}10^{-4}{\Omega}-cm$ and transmittance of 81.2% for a film 300nm thick in the wavelength range of the visible spectrum.

  • Transparent and conducting ITO/Cu/ITO multilayered films were deposited by magnetron sputtering on unheated polycarbonate (PC) substrates. The thickness of the Cu intermediate film was varied from 5 to 20 nm. Changes in the microstructure and optoelectrical properties of ITO/Cu/ITO films were investigated with respect to the thickness of the Cu intermediated layer. The optoelectrical properties of the films were significantly influenced by the thickness of the Cu interlayer. The sandwich structure of ITO 50 nm/Cu 5 nm/ITO 45 nm films had a sheet resistance of $36{\Omega}$/Sq. and an optical transmittance of 67% (contain substrate) at a wavelength of 550 nm, while the ITO 50 nm/Cu 20 nm/ITO 30 nm films had a sheet resistance of $70{\Omega}$/Sq. and an optical transmittance of 36%. The electrical and optical properties of ITO/Cu/ITO films were determined mainly by the Cu film properties. From the figure of merit, it is concluded that the ITO/Cu/ITO films with a 5 nm Cu interlayer showed the better performance in transparent conducting electrode applications than the conventional ITO films.

  • ZnO:Al thin film can be used as a transparent conducting oxide(TCO) which has low electric resistivity and high optical transmittance for the front electrode of amorphous silicon solar cells and display devices. This study of electrical, crystallographic and optical properties of Al doped ZnO thin films prepared by Facing Targets Sputtering(FTS), where strong internal magnets were contained in target holders to confine the plasma between the targets, is described. Optimal transmittance and resistivity was obtained by controlling flow rate of $O_2$ gas and substrate temperature. When the $O_2$ gas rate of 0.3 and substrate temperature $200^{\circ}C$, ZnO:Al thin film had strongly oriented c-axis and lower resistivity( < $10^{-4}{\Omega}-cm$ ).

  • Transparent conducting aluminum-doped zinc oxide (AZO) thin films were deposited on Coming glass substrate using an Gun-type rf magnetron sputtering deposition technology. The AZO thin films were fabricated with an AZO ceramic target (Zn: 98wt.%, $Al_2O_3$: 2wt.%). The AZO thin films were deposited with various growth conditions such as the substrate temperature, oxygen pressure. X -ray diffraction (XRD), UV/visible spectroscope, atomic force microscope (AFM), and Hall effect measurement system were done in order to investigate the properties of the AZO thin films Among the AZO thin films prepared in this study, the one formed at conditions of the substrate temperature $100^{\circ}C$, Ar 50 sccm, $O_2$ 5 sccm and working pressure 5 motor showed the best properties of an electrical resistivity of $1.763{\times}10^{-4}\;[{\Omega}{\cdot}cm]$, a carrier concentration of $1.801{\times}10^{21}\;[cm^{-3}]$, and a carrier mobility of $19.66\;[cm^2/V{\cdot}S]$, which indicates that it could be used as a transparent electrode for thin film transistor and flat panel display applications.
