Investigation of carbon nanotube growth termination mechanism by in-situ transmission electron microscopy approaches

  • In this work, we report in-situ observations of changes in catalyst morphology, and of growth termination of individual carbon nanotubes (CNTs), by complete loss of the catalyst particle attached to it. The observations strongly support the growth-termination mechanism of CNT forests or carpets by dynamic morphological evolution of catalyst particles induced by Ostwald ripening, and sub-surface diffusion. We show that in the tip-growth mode, as well as in the base-growth mode, the growth termination of CNT by dissolution of catalyst particles is plausible. This may allow the growth termination mechanism by evolution of catalyst morphology to be applicable to not only CNT forest growth, but also to other growth methods (for example, floating-catalyst chemical vapor deposition), which do not use any supporting layer or substrate beneath a catalyst layer.

  • We introduce a scheme with a maximized efficiency of detecting atoms passing through an optical standing-wave mode cavity. Consider a standing-wave optical cavity illuminated by a weak probe beam through one of its mirrors where the transmission through the other mirror is monitored by a photodetector. If an atom is put in the cavity, the atom-cavity coupling shifts the resonance frequency of the system via the so-called normal mode splitting, and thereby the transmission power will drop. In fact, this type of atom detection scheme has been used in recent single atom trap experiments In practice, however, the field in a standing-wave mode will have a geometrical structure having nodes and antinodes that when the atom traverses the cavity through one of the nodes, there will be no such effect of atom-field interaction.   • In this paper, a modified PCF (Point Coordination Function) MAC (Medium Access Control) Protocol is proposed to support the multiple direct link communication between STAs (STAtions) in infrastructure mode IEEE 802.11 wireless LANs. By the proposed MAC protocol, the direct link communication between STAs, which are located within the communication range of each other, is allowed without the use of AP (Access Point) as a relay. Moreover, when multiple direct data communication between STAs can be simultaneously performed with a sufficiently small interference, multiple simultaneous direct link communication is allowed for the efficient use of radio bandwidth. AP polls STAs to grant the transmission opportunities using the direct link communication by transmitting the polling frames to STAs. An efficient polling method for granting the transmission opportunities to STAs is proposed to reduce the number of the polling frame transmissions and enhance the PCF MAC performance.

  • Four models for stick-slip friction are presented and are adopted for a numerical simulation study for a manual transmission clutch damper in idle mode. Meaning of parameters for friction models are explained and proper values are suggested. Also explained ate the reason why those specific values for the parameters are chosen. Preferable model for the clutch damper In Idle mode is discussed in terms of calculation efficiency and fidelity of the model based on real measured data. For clutch damper idle mode simulation studies, all four models perform equally well.

  • In this work, a broadband composite right/left-handed (CRLH) half-mode substrate integrated waveguide (HMSIW) quadrature Wilkinson power divider is proposed. The proposed CRLH-HMSIW quadrature power divider includes a microstrip Wilkinson power divider on the transition structure between the microstrip and HMSIW, and two thru transmission lines for the HMSIW and the CRLH-HMSIW. The measured amplitude, phase difference and isolation between the two output ports of the proposed structure have 1 dB, ${\pm}5^{\circ}$ and less than -15 dB in a wide frequency range of 4.1-6.68 GHz with 47.9% bandwidth, respectively.

Complete Tunneling of Light via Local Barrier Modes in A Composite Barrier with Metamaterials

  • We investigate the conditions of the complete tunneling of light across a composite barrier made of multiple layers involving metamaterials. It is shown that complete tunneling phenomena are related to the resonance transmission properties of local modes formed in barrier layers and that there are two distinctive kinds of local barrier modes involved in actual complete tunneling: the degenerate inner-barrier mode and the full barrier mode. Complete tunneling occurs via two successive mode couplings: from the incident plane wave to the plane wave in the transmission layer through the direct mediation of these two kinds of local barrier modes.

Red-green-blue Beam Combiner Based on Two-mode Interference

  • A compact red-green-blue beam combiner (multiplexer) based on two-mode interference (TMI) is proposed and its feasibility is shown through three-dimensional beam propagation simulation. The first stage TMI beam combiner makes red (637 nm) and blue (446 nm) beams combined toward one output port and the second stage one combines red, blue, and green (532 nm) beams. The power transmission to the output port from the red, green, and blue input ports are 0.96, 0.99, and 0.98, respectively. When the wavelength deviation is 10 nm, the transmission is maintained to be larger than 0.9. The size of the combiner is as tiny as $0.02{\times}3.8mm^2$.

  • The EMI noise source in a switching mode power supply is dominated by a common mode noise. If we can understand the common mode noise occurring mechanism, it is resulted to find out the method to suppress the EMI noise source in the switching mode power supply. The common mode noise is occurring mostly due to circuit is unbalanced which is caused by the capacitive coupling to frame ground, which passes through a heatsink of the switching devices. This research paper presents a new effective balancing method of buck converter circuit by mean of grounding the parasitic and compensation capacitors in correct proportion which is called that the common mode impedance balance (CMIB). The CMIB can be achieved by source, transmission line and termination balanced, such balancing, the common mode current will be cancelled out in the frame ground. The greatly reduced common mode noise can be confirmed by the experimental results.

Design of a Triple-Mode Bandpass Filter Using a Closed Loop Resonator

  • In this study, a novel third-order bandpass filter, which is based on a rectangular closed loop resonator, is presented. By adding a series resonator to the conventional loop resonator, the resonator's even resonant mode is split into two modes, while the odd resonant mode is not affected. Therefore, by varying the values of the series resonator elements, the resonant frequencies of two even modes can be determined independent of the odd-mode resonant frequency. In the proposed triple-mode filter design, instead of using a lumped series resonator, a T-shaped transmission line is coupled to the resonator via a small gap. To verify the design method, a filter is designed at 2.4 GHz with a bandwidth of 100 MHz. The improved performances of the proposed triple-mode filter are compared with those of the conventional dual mode filter.

  • In this paper, a motor control algorithm for performing a mode change without an integrated starter generator (ISG) is suggested for the automatic transmission-based hybrid electric vehicle (HEV). Dynamic models of the HEV powertrains such as engine, motor, and mode clutch are derived for the transient state during the mode change, and the HEV performance simulator is developed. Using the HEV performance bench tester, the characteristics of the mode clutch torque are measured and the motor torque required for the mode clutch synchronization is determined. Based on the dynamic models and the mode clutch torque, a motor torque control algorithm is presented for mode changes, and motor control without the ISG is investigated and compared with the existing ISG control.
