Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMD), which is composed of a transition metal atom and chalcogen ion atoms, usually form vacancies based on the knock-on threshold of each atom. In particular, when electron beam is irradiated on a monolayer TMD such as MoS2 and WS2, S vacancies are formed preferentially, and they are aligned linearly to constitute line defects. And then, a hole is formed at the point where the successively formed line defects collide, and metal clusters are also formed at the edge of the hole. This study reports a process in which the line defects formed in a monolayer WS2 sheet expends into holes. Here, the process in which the W cluster, which always occurs at the edge of the formed hole, goes through a uniform intermediate phase is explained based on the line defects and the formation behavior of the hole. Further investigation confirms the atomic structure of the intermediate phase using annular dark field scanning transition electron microscopy (ADF-STEM) and image simulation.
Adsorption of alkali metals on a silicon surface has attracted much attention due to its importance in metal-semiconductor interface technology, In particular, the bonding nature of alkali metal to silicon substrate has been a focus of fundamental research efforts. We examined the adsorbed layer of Cs on a Si(111)-(7$\times$) surface by reactive ion scattering (RIS) of hyperthermal Cs+ beams. RIS from a Cs-adsorbed surface gives rise to Cs, representing pickup of surface Cs by Cs projectile. The Cs intensity is proportional to surface coverage of Cs at a high substrate temperature (473 K), while it varies anomalously with Cs coverage at low temperatures (130-170 K). This observation indicates that RIS selectively detects metallic Cs on surface, but discriminates ionic Cs. Transition from ionic to metallic Cs adlayer is driven by thermal diffusion of Cs and their clustering process.

The efficient synthesis of four mesitylene-based receptors 1-4 and their potentiometric response characteristics to alkali metal, alkaline earth metal, and transition metal ions, under various pH conditions are outlined. Receptor 1-based electrode exhibited more sensitive response to Ag+ ion (49 mV/decade of range from 10-6 to 10-2 M) than the 2-based electrode (47 mV/decade of range from 3 ´ 10-5 to 10-2 M), while the 3- and 4-based ones revealed sub-Nernstian below 40 mV/pAg+. All electrodes showed substantial responses to Ag+ ion under acidic condition, but there was almost nil-response to other transition metal ions (Fe2+, Co2+, Zn2+, Ni2+, Pb2+, Cd2+, Cu2+ and Hg2+). The association constant of receptor 1 toward Ag+ ion, measured by 1H NMR titration, showed the largest value (200 M-1) among the tested receptors. The results were interpreted with semi empirically-modeled structures.
Label-free, sensitive and selective detection methods with high spatial resolution are critically required for future applications in chemical sensor, biological sensor, and nanospectroscopic imaging. Here I describe the development of Plasmon Resonance Energy Transfer (PRET)-based molecular imaging in living cells as the first demonstration of intracellular imaging with PRET-based nanospectroscopy. In-vivo PRET imaging relied on the overlap between plasmon resonance frequency of gold nanoplasmonic probe (GNP) and absorption peak frequencies of conjugated molecules, which leads to create 'quantized quenching dips' in Rayleigh scattering spectrum of GNP. The position of these dips exactly matched with the absorption peaks of target molecules. As another innovative application of PRET, I present a highly selective and sensitive detection of metal ions by creating conjugated metal-ligand complexes on a single GNP. In addition to conferring high spatial resolution due to the small size of the metal ion probes (50 nm in diameter), this method is 100 to 1,000 folds more sensitive than organic reporter-based methods. Moreover, this technique achieves high selectivity due to the selective formation of Cu2+complexes and selective resonant quenching of GNP by the conjugated complexes. Since many metal ion ligand complexes generate new absorption peak due to the d-d transition in the metal ligand complex when a specific metal ion is inserted into the complex, we can match with the scattering frequency of nanoplasmonic metal ligand systems and the new absorption peak.
Interest in eco-friendly materials with high efficiencies is increasing significantly as science and technology undergo a paradigm shift toward environment-friendly and sustainable development. MXenes, a class of two-dimensional inorganic compounds, are generally defined as transition metal carbides or nitrides composed of few-atoms-thick layers with functional groups. Recently MXenes, because of their desirable electrical, thermal, and mechanical properties that emerge from conductive layered structures with tunable surface terminations, have garnered significant attention as promising candidates for energy storage applications (e.g., supercapacitors and electrode materials for Li-ion batteries), water purification, and gas sensors. In this review, we introduce MXenes and describe their properties and research trends by classifying them into two main categories: transition metal carbides and nitrides, including Ti-based MXenes, Mo-based MXenes, and Nb-based MXenes.
Pseudo-first-order rate constants ($k_{obsd}$) have been measured spectrophotometrically for the reactions of 5-nitro-8-quinolyl nicotinate (4) and 5-nitro-8-quinolyl isonicotinate (5) with alkali metal ethoxides (EtOM; M = K, Na and Li) in anhydrous ethanol at $25.0{\pm}0.1^{\circ}C$. The plots of $k_{obsd}$ vs. [EtOM] curve slightly upward for the reactions with EtOK and EtONa but are linear for the reactions with EtOLi and for those with EtOK in the presence of 18-crown-6-ether. Dissection of $k_{obsd}$ into $k_{EtO^-}$ and $k_{EtOM}$ (i.e., the second-order rate constants for the reactions with the dissociated $EtO^-$ and ion-paired EtOM, respectively) has revealed that the reactivity increases in the order $EtO^-{\approx}EtOLi$ < EtOK < EtONa for the reactions of 4 and EtOLi < $EtO^-$ < EtOK < EtONa for the reactions of 5. Comparison of the kinetic results for the reactions of 4 and 5 with those reported previously for the corresponding reactions of 5-nitro-8-quinolyl benzoate (2) and picolinate (3) has revealed that the esters possessing a pyridine ring (i.e., 3-5) are significantly more reactive than the benzoate ester 2 due to the presence of the electronegative N atom (e.g., 2 << 3 < 4 < 5). It has been concluded that $M^+$ ion catalyzes the reactions of 3-5 by increasing the electrophilicity of the reaction center through a five-membered cyclic transition state (TS) for the reaction of 3 and via a four-membered cyclic TS for the reactions of 4 and 5.
Pseudo-first-order rate constants ($k_{obsd}$) have been measured for nucleophilic substitution reactions of 2-pyridyl benzoate 5 with alkali metal ethoxides (EtOM, M = Li, Na, K) in anhydrous ethanol. The plots of $k_{obsd}$ vs. $[EtOM]_o$ are curved upwardly but linear in the excess presence of 18-crown-6-ether (18C6) with significant decreased $k_{obsd}$ values in the reaction with EtOK. The $k_{obsd}$ value for the reaction of 5 with a given EtONa concentration decreases steeply upon addition of 15-crown-5-ether (15C5) to the reaction medium up to ca. [15C5]/$[EtONa]_o$ = 1, and remains nearly constant thereafter, indicating that $M^+$ ions catalyze the reaction in the absence of the complexing agents. Dissection $k_{obsd}$ into $k_{EtO^-}$- and $k_{EtOM}$, i.e., the second-order rate constants for the reaction with the dissociated $EtO^-$ and the ion-paired EtOM, respectively has revealed that ion-paired EtOM is 3.2 - 4.6 times more reactive than dissociated $EtO^-$. It has been concluded that $M^+$ ions increase the electrophilicity of the reaction center through a 6-membered cyclic transition state. This idea has been examined from the corresponding reactions of 4-pyridyl benzoate 6, which cannot form such a 6-membered cyclic transition state.
Fluorescent organic molecules that respond to changes in the $Fe^{2+}$ concentration with selectivity to other abundant di-valent metal ions will offer the ability to understand the dynamic fluctuations of the $Fe^{2+}$ ion in interesting media. The use of 6-Br-ppmbi, derived from 2-pyridin-2-yl-benzimidazole, for metal ion-selective fluorescence recognition was investigated. Screening of the main group and transition metal ions showed exclusive selectivity for $Fe^{2+}$ ions even in the presence of competing metal ions. In addition, the requirement for low concentrations of probe molecules to detect certain amounts of $Fe^{2+}$ ions make this sensor unique compared to previously reported $Fe^{2+}$ ion sensors.

A new thiacalix[4]arene diamide (TCAm) has been prepared and its electrochemical property and complexation behavior toward various metal ions have been investigated by voltammetry. p-tert-Butylthiacalix[4]arene diamide (TCAm) exhibited selectivity toward Sr2+ ion over alkali, alkaline earth and transition metal ions while conventional calix[4]arene diamides showed selective binding property with Ca2+ ion. This is probably due to the bigger size of thiacalix[4]arene than those of calix[4]arene.
Rate constants have been measured spectrophotometrically for the nucleophilic substitution reactions of aryl substituted benzenesulfonates (3) with alkali metal ethoxides ($EtO^-M^+$) and butane-2,3-dione monoximates ($Ox^-M^+$) in ethanol at $25^{\circ}C$. The reactivity of the alkali metal ethoxides decreases in the order $EtO^-K^+> EtO^- > EtO^-Li^+$, indicating that $K^+$ ion behaves as a catalyst and $Li^+$ ion acts as an inhibitor for all the substrates studied. For the corresponding reactions of 3 with Ox^-M^+$, $Li^+$ ion also exhibits inhibitory effect for all the substrates, while, $K^+$ ion shows catalytic or inhibitory effects depending on the nature of substituents on the acyl and phenyl moieties. A study of substituent effect on rate has revealed that both EtO^- $and Ox^-$ systems have the same reaction mechanism. The different behavior shown by $K^+$ ion for the reaction of 3 with $EtO^-$ and $Ox^-$ would be attributed to a difference in charge polarization of S=O bond in the transition state between the two systems and/or a change in conformation of Ox^-K^+$.
