  • Theoretical analysis about transient torsional vibration was started from early 1960's for high power synchronous motor application. Especially, its simulation and measuring techniques in marine engineering field have been steadily studied by classification societies and designers of large diesel engine. In this paper, the simulation method of transient torsional vibration of two stroke low speed diesel engine using the Newmark method are introduced.

  • Linear motor feed drive systems have been broadly used in machine tools or precision automatic feed systems. Recently, modem machine tools require high speed and high precision feed drive system to achieve high productivity. Unfortunately, a feed drive system, even though it was optimum designed, may experience severe transient vibrations during high-speed operation if its feed rate control is unsuitable. A rough feed rate curve having discontinuity in its acceleration profile causes a serious vibration problem in the feed slides system. This paper presents a feed rate optimization of a machine tool feed slide system, which is driven by a linear motor, for its minimum vibrations. Firstly, a 4-degree-of-freedom lumped parameter model is proposed for the vibration analysis of a linear motor driven machine tool feed drive system. Next, a feed rate optimization of the feed slide is carried out for minimum vibrations. The feed rate curve optimization strategy is to find out the most appropriate acceleration profile with jerk continuity. Of course, the optimized feed rate should approximate to the desired one as possible. A genetic algorithm with variable penalty function was used in this feed rate optimization.

Next, a feed rate optimization of the feed slide was carried out for minimum vibrations. The feed rate curve optimization strategy is to find out the most appropriate acceleration profile having finite jerk. Of course, the optimized feed rate should approximate to the desired one as possible. A genetic algorithm with variable penalty function was used in this feed rate optimization.

  • Occupants induced floor vertical vibrations may cause other occupant's annoyance and lead to social loss. To help control such floor vibrations, several criteria have been developed mostly based on human perception tests and floor vibration tests. Floor vibration is evaluated by comparison with criteria and vibration parameters of subject floor, such as frequency, damping ratio, acceleration value, vibration duration time and occurrence frequency. Three acceleration value parameters are used in criteria; peak acceleration, rms acceleration and VDV, when a floor vibration serviceability is evaluated. Meanwhile rms acceleration and peak acceleration are adopted as vibration limit value in criteria and researches of human perception for vibration. Occupants induced floor vibration is transient rather than steady state. However, rms acceleration is not reliable parameter for evaluating transient vibration. The objective of this study is to investigate the characters of human perception level according to acceleration value parameters for vibration induced by heel impacts and walking activities.

  • A modified command shaping control to reduce residual vibrations at a target position and to limit the sway angle of the payload during traveling for container crane systems is investigated. When the maneuvering time is minimized, a large transient amplitude and steady state oscillations may occur inherently. Since a large swing of the payload during the transfer is dangerous, the control objective is to transfer a payload to the desired place as quickly as possible while limiting the swing angle of the payload during the transfer. The conventional shapers have been enhanced by adding one more constraint to limit intermediate sway angles of the payload. The developed method is shown to be more effective than other conventional shapers for prevention of an excessive transient sway. Computer simulation results are provided.

  • Inside the factory buildings of aprecision industry (which produces semiconductors or TFT-LCD), thousands of vibration-sensitive precision equipments operate in the clean rooms. Various utility equipments that are installed around them for proper operation cause various sources of noise and of vibration to exist inside the clean rooms and thus deteriorate the noise and the vibration environment within. In this study, we check if the existing transient vibration phenomenon is caused by the vibrations that arise from operating the utility installed near these equipments; compare and evaluate the vibration criteria of precision equipments regarding the transient vibration phenomenon; and check the efficiency of these criteria.

  • This paper deals with the free vibrations of horizontally curved beams with transition curve. Based on the dynamic equilibrium equations of a curved beam element subjected to the stress resultants and inertia forces, the governing differential equations are derived for the out-of-plane vibration of curved beam wish variable curvature. This equations are applied to the beam having transition curve in which the third parabolic curve is chosen in this study. The differential equations are solved by the numerical procedures for calculating the natural frequencies. As the numerical results, the various parametric studies effecting on natural frequencies are investigated and its results are presented in tables and figures. Also the laboratory scaled experiments were conducted for verifying the theories developed herein.

  • The piping system of a power plant suffers not only thermal expansion according to the temperature variation, but also many kinds of load: steady state vibrations due to the equipment operation or fluid flow, and transient vibrations due to the earthquake or explosion, etc. The snubbers are usually installed on the piping system to allow thermal expansion, and to reduce dynamic responses. Most snubbers are kinds of hydraulic and mechanical type, which can be degraded by leakage and abrasion, and required much cost for maintenance and replacement. Recently the wire rope type snubbers are developed and applied to the power plant, and proved as effective to reduce piping system vibration. Wire rope type snubber uses the bending rigidity and energy dissipation properties of ropes. This paper presents the procedure of design, and the method to apply hysteresis curve to the dynamic response analysis. Experiments were also conducted to confirm design results.

  • In this paper, the optimal command input is considered in order to minimize the residual vibrations of a flexible cantilever beam when the beam simply changes its position by translation or rotation. Although a cantilever beam has many modes of vibration, it is shown that the consideration of the first mode is sufficient in this case. Thus, the problem becomes a single-degree-of-freedom system subjected to a ground excitation. Two simple methods are proposed to find the optimal command input based on the shock response spectrum (SRS). The first method is the simplest and can be applied to lightly damped cases, and the second method is applicable to more general problems. The second method gives almost the same results as the input shaping method. However the proposed method gives a easier and clearer control strategy.

  • Radiation damping due to wave propagation in unbounded domains may cause a significant reduction of structural vibrations when excited near resonance. Here a novel matrix-valued algebraic Pad$\acute{e}$-like stiffness formulation in the frequency-domain and a corresponding state equation in the time domain are elaborated for a soil-structure interaction problem with a layered soil excited in a transient manner by a flexible rotor during startup and shutdown. The contribution of radiation damping caused by a soil-layer upon a rigid bedrock is characterized by the corresponding amount of critical damping as it is used in structural dynamics.
