  • A transient heat transfer and thermal stress analysis for a brake drum of commercial vehicles have been performed by ANSYS code in the cases of single braking and the repeated braking condition. The temperature and thermal stress distributions in the brake drum under various braking conditions were obtained using a two-dimensional axisymmetric model. In case of deceleration of 0.3G with an initial vehicle speed of 60km/h, the maximum temperature in the drum was $87.6^{\circ}C$ after braking application. The maximum stress of 78.7MPa in the drum occurred at the intersection between the flange and hat under a condition in which repeated 15 cycles braking with an initial vehicle speed of 60km/h and a deceleration of 0.3G is applied to according to KS R1129. The maximum stress value is much lower than the yield strength of drum material(FC250).

  • The heat diffusion equation for an annular fin is analyzed using Laplace transformations. The fin has a uniform thickness with its edge heat loss and two temperature profiles at the base such as a step change in temperature or heat flux. To obtain the exact solutions for temperature distribution, this paper can detect the eigenvalues which satisfy the roots of transcendental equations in above two cases during inverse Laplace transformations. The exact solutions for temperature and heat flux are obtained with the infinite Series by dimensionless factors. The solutions are developed for small and large values of times. These series solutions converge rapidly for large values of time, but slowly for small.

  • An inverse problem of transient heat conduction in a thin finite circular plate with the given temperature distribution on the interior surface of a thin circular plate being a function of both time and position has been solved with the help of integral transform technique and also determine the thermal deflection on the outer curved surface of a thin circular plate defined as $0\;{\leq}\;r\;{\leq}\;a,\;0\;{\leq}\;z\;{\leq}\;h$. The results, obtained in the series form in terms of Bessel's functions, are illustrated numerically.

  • In the present study, a three-dimensional numerical simulation was performed in a paint drying system of vehicle assembly line. In the drying system hot air and cool air are blown in turn from the nozzles to dry the trim of vehicle. Inlet boundary condition using user subroutine code is adopted to consider the moving motion of the vehicle. The present paper aims to improve the performance of the drying system. The transient distribution of temperature and velocity at the surface of the vehicle were predicted numerically. From these results, optimal operating condition of the drying system are to be suggested.

  • A conjugate conduction-convection analysis has been made for a plate fin which exchanges heat with its fluid environment by forced convection. The analysis is based on a one- dimensional model for the plate fin whereby the transient heat conduction equation for the fin is solved simultaneously with the conservation equations for mass, momentum, and energy in the fluid boundary layer adjacent to the fin. The forced convection heat transfer coefficient is not specified in advance but is one the results of the numerical solutions. Numerical results of the overall heat transfer rate, the local heat transfer coefficient, the local heat flux, the fin efficiency and the fin surface temperature distribution for Pr=0.7 are presented for a wide range of operating conditions.

  • Thermomechanical analysis is conducted on the radioactive repository in deep rock mass considering the in-situ stress, excavation and thermal loading of a radioactive waste. Thermomechanical properties of a discontinuous rock mass are estimated by a theoretical method so called sequential analysis. Using the estimated properties as input for finite element analysis, the influence on temperature distribution and thermal stress is analyzed within the scope of 2-dimensional steady state and transient heat transfer and coupled thermal elastic plastic behaviour. Granitic rock mass is taken for this analysis. The analysis is done for two different rock mass conditions, i.e. continuous-homogeneous and highly jointed conditions, for the purpose of comparison. In the case of steady state, the extent of disturbed zone around the storage tunnel due to the heat production of the spent-fuel canister varies depending on the thermomechanical properties of the rock mass. In the case of transient analyses, the response of the jointed rock mass to the thermal loading after radioactive waste disposal varies significantly with time, resulting in dramatic changes in the both size and location of disturbed zone.

  • An experimental study is performed to investigate the characteristics of near wake flow behind a circular cylinder with serrated fins using a constant temperature anemometer and flow visualization. Various vortex shedding modes are observed. Fin height and pitch are closely related to the vortex shedding frequency after a certain transient Reynolds number. The through velocity across the fins decreases with increasing fin height and decreasing fin pitch. Vortex shedding is affected strongly by the velocity distribution just on top of the finned tube. The weaker gradient of velocity distribution is shown as increasing the freestream velocity and the fin height, while decreasing the fin pitch. The weaker velocity gradient delays the entrainment flow and weakens its strength. As a result of this phenomenon, vortex shedding is decreased. The effective diameter is defined as a virtual circular cylinder diameter taking into account the volume of fins, while the hydraulic diameter is proposed to cover the effect of friction by the fin surfaces. The Strouhal number based upon the effective diameters seems to correlate well with that of a circular cylinder without fins. After a certain transient Reynolds number, the trend of the Strouhal number can be estimated by checking the ratio of effective diameter to inner diameter. The normalized velocity and turbulent intensity distributions with the hydraulic diameter exhibit the best correlation with the circular cylinder's data.

  • The pupose of this study is to measure droplet size and velocity simultaneously for a transient diesel fuel spray in a quiescent chamber at atmospheric temperature and pressure. Generally, diesel combustion phenomena is mainly governed by characteristics of injection system and fuel spray. Therefore we need to clarify these characteristics for developing more economical diesel systems. In this study, correlation between droplet size and velocity was measured at downstream distance from nozzle. Governing parameters are pump speed and fuel quantity for the detailed nature in this transient diesel fuel spray. It is observed effect to the droplet size and velocity distribution. Velocity(peak, mean, rms), number density and droplet size were investigated simulaneously using PDA in the spray. Various results are presented to illustrate the effects of operation factors and correlation between the droplet diameter and velocity.

  • This paper considers the concept of analog computing based on a cellular neural network (CNN) paradigm to simulate nuclear reactor dynamics using a time-dependent second order form of the neutron transport equation. Instead of solving nuclear reactor dynamic equations numerically, which is time-consuming and suffers from such weaknesses as vulnerability to transient phenomena, accumulation of round-off errors and floating-point overflows, use is made of a new method based on a cellular neural network. The state-of-the-art shows the CNN as being an alternative solution to the conventional numerical computation method. Indeed CNN is an analog computing paradigm that performs ultra-fast calculations and provides accurate results. In this study use is made of the CNN model to simulate the space-time response of scalar flux distribution in steady state and transient conditions. The CNN model also is used to simulate step perturbation in the core. The accuracy and capability of the CNN model are examined in 2D Cartesian geometry for two fixed source problems, a mini-BWR assembly, and a TWIGL Seed/Blanket problem. We also use the CNN model concurrently for a typical small PWR assembly to simulate the effect of temperature feedback, poisons, and control rods on the scalar flux distribution.

  • Dynamic thermal rating of the overhead transmission lines is affected by many uncertain factors. The ambient temperature, wind speed and wind direction are the main sources of uncertainty. Measurement uncertainty is an important parameter to evaluate the reliability of measurement results. This paper presents the uncertainty analysis based on Monte Carlo. On the basis of establishing the mathematical model and setting the probability density function of the input parameter value, the probability density function of the output value is determined by probability distribution random sampling. Through the calculation and analysis of the transient thermal balance equation and the steady- state thermal balance equation, the steady-state current carrying capacity, the transient current carrying capacity, the standard uncertainty and the probability distribution of the minimum and maximum values of the conductor under 95% confidence interval are obtained. The simulation results indicate that Monte Carlo method can decrease the computational complexity, speed up the calculation, and increase the validity and reliability of the uncertainty evaluation.
