Electric power system design and analysis for FLNG vessel

  • The electrical reliability of the power generation and distribution system of Floating Liquefied Natural Gas vessels has been analyzed according to the operating modes using Electrical Transient Analysis Program in this paper. Electricity is used for the topside processes, cargo pumps for off-loading, thrusters for heading control and marine equipment. It is very important to improve the safety, efficiency, and stability of the electrical power system for successful operation. The voltage variation of the high and the low voltage bus shall be within the primitive limitation range at normal operation loads both in steady state and in the transient state. The power system was simulated and compared with class rule for design verification.

  • In this study, an explicit transient analysis program considering material and geometric nolinearities has been developed and used to analyze the dynamic behaviors of circular, parabolic, sinusoidal and catenary arches according to the change of shapes and boundary conditions. To understand dynamic behaviors of arches, first of all, the results of free vibration analysis for four kinds of arches are discussed. The results of transient analysis under impact loads we discussed in respect of boundary condition, change of height, and arch-shape. The dynamic behaviors of arches by nonlinear transient analysis considering both material and geometric nolinearities are also discussed.

Geometry and load effects on transient response of a VFGM annular plate: An analytical approach

  • In this article, the effect of different geometrical, materials and load parameters on the transient response of axisymmetric viscoelastic functionally graded annular plates with different boundary conditions are studied. The behavior of the plate is assumed the elastic in bulk and viscoelastic in shear with the standard linear solid model. Also, the graded properties vary through the thickness according to a power law function. Three types of mostly applied transient loading, i.e., step, impulse, and harmonic with different load distribution respect to radius coordinate are examined. The motion equations and the corresponding boundary conditions are extracted by applying the first order shear deformation theory which are three coupled partial differential equations with variable coefficients. The resulting motion equations are solved analytically using the perturbation technique and the generalized Fourier series. The sensitivity of the response to the graded indexes, different transverse loads, aspect ratios, boundary conditions and the material properties are investigated too. The results are compared with the finite element analysis.

  • Design of structures subjected to blast loads are usually carried out through nonlinear inelastic dynamic analysis followed by imposing acceptance criteria specified in design codes. In addition to comprehensive aspects of inelastic dynamic analyses, particularly in analysis and design of structures subjected to transient loads, they inherently suffer from convergence and computational cost problems. In this research, a strategy is proposed for design of steel moment resisting frames under far range blast loads. This strategy is inspired from performance based seismic design concepts, which is here developed to blast design. For this purpose, an algorithm is presented to calculate the capacity modification factors of frame members in order to simplify design of these structures subjected to blast loading. The present method provides a simplified design procedure in which the linear dynamic analysis is preformed, instead of the time-consuming nonlinear dynamic analysis. Nonlinear and linear analyses are accomplished in order to establish this design procedure, and consequently the final design procedure is proposed as a strategy requiring only linear structural analysis, while acceptance criteria of nonlinear analysis is implicitly satisfied.

  • A new solution for the dynamic analysis of as asphalt concrete pavements under moving loads has been developed. The asphalt concrete pavement can be modeled in elastic or viscoelastic medium of multi-layered structure. The subgrade can be modeled as either a rigid base or a semi-infinite halfspace. The loads may be constant or arbitrary circular loads into one direction. The method utilizes the Complex Response Method of transient analysis with a continuum solution in the horizontal direction and a finite-element solution in the vertical direction. This proposed method incorporates such important factors as wave propagation, inertia and damping effects of the medium as well as frequency-dependent asphalt concrete properties. The proposed method has been validted with the full-scale field truck test, which was conducted on instrumented asphalt concrete section on a test track at PACCAR Technical Center in Mount Vernon, Washington. Comparison with field strain data from full-scale pavement tests has shown excellent agreement.   • Along with the recent trend of complexity and long distance transmission in power system, dynamic analysis of stability considering the load characteristics is an important subject. In this paper, the influence of the induction motor loads on the power system voltage is investigated. The influence of the inductive load ratio and the inertia of induction motor on the voltage response of the power system are examined, and in the case of the high percentage of the induction motor load, induction motors in the power system can lead to transient voltage instability even under the system condition such as switching operation. The application of static condenser(SC) to prevent the transient voltage instability is introduced.

  • In this study, structural vibration analyses of a composite smart unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) have been conducted considering dynamic hub-loads of tilt-rotor. Practical computational structural dynamics technique based on the finite element method is applied using MSC/NASTRAN. The present smart UAV(TR-S2) structural model is constructed as full 3D configurations with both the helicopter flight mode and the airplane flight mode. Modal based transient response and frequency response analyses are used to efficiently investigate vibration characteristics of structure and installed electronic equipments. It is typically shown that the helicopter flight mode with the 90-deg tilting angle is the most critical case for the induced vibration of installed electronic equipments in the front.

  • The utility-interactive inverter with critical loads should supply continuous and stable voltage to critical loads even during the grid fault. The conventional control method which performs current control for grid-connected mode and voltage control for stand-alone mode undergoes the critical load voltage variation during grid fault. The critical load voltage may have large transient when the inverter performs mode transfer after the islanding detection. Recently, the indirect current control method which does not have the transient state during not only islanding detection but also the mode transfer has been proposed. However, since the voltage control is maintained even during the grid-connected mode it is difficult to detect the islanding. This paper proposes an active anti-islanding method suitable for the indirect current control method which does not have NDZ(Non-Detection Zone).

  • Investigation of the lateral force fluctuations in an axisymmetric overexpanded compressed truncated perfect (CTP) nozzle for the shutdown transient is presented. These nozzles experience side-loads during start-up and shut-down operations, because of the flow separation at nozzle walls. Two types of flow separations such as free shock separation (FSS) and restricted shock separation (RSS) shock structure occur. A two-dimensional unsteady numerical simulation has been carried out over an axisymmetric CTP nozzle to simulate the lateral force fluctuations in nozzle during shutdown process. Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes equations are numerically solved using a fully implicit finite volume scheme. Governing equations are solved by coupled implicit scheme. Two equation k-$\omega$ SST turbulence model is selected. Unsteady pressure is measured at four locations along the nozzle wall. Present pressure variation compared well with the experimental data. During shutdown transient, separation pattern varies from FSS to RSS and finally returns to FSS. Several pressure peaks are observed during the RSS separation pattern. These pressure peaks generate lateral force or side loads in rocket nozzle.

The bubble problem of the plasma facing material: A finite element study

  • The damage of first wall material in fusion reactor due to the bubbles caused by plasma has been studied by introducing a relation between the von Mises equivalent stress and the temperature field. The locations and shapes of the bubbles and the synergetic effect between the different bubbles under steady operational conditions have been studied using the finite elements method. Under transient heat loads, plastic deformations have been found to occur, and are significantly enhanced by the presence of the bubbles. The calculated concentration locations of von Mises equivalent stress are well consistent with the observed crack positions of the tungsten surface in many test experiments. Our simulations show that the damage of the bubbles is not severe enough to lead to catastrophic failure of the tungsten armor; however, it can cause local and gradual detachment of tungsten surface, which provides a reasonable explanation for the observed pits and rough or hairy surface morphology etc. Considering the transient heat loads, the lower bound of the security thickness of the tungsten tile is estimated to be greater than 2 mm.
