  • Genetic networks are a key to unraveling dynamic properties of biological processes and regulation of genes plays an essential role in dynamic behavior of the genetic networks. A popular characterization of regulation of the gene is a kinetic model. However, many kinetic parameters in the genetic regulation have not been available. To overcome this difficulty, in this report, state-space approach to modeling gene regulation is presented. Second-order systems are used to characterize gene regulation. Interpretation of coefficients in the second order systems as resistance, capacitance and inductance is studied. The mathematical methods for transient response analysis of gene regulation to external perturbation are investigated. Criterion for classifying gene into three categories: underdamped, overdamped and critical damped is discussed. The proposed models are applied to yeast cell cycle gene expression data.

  • The paper addresses modeling and analysis of a grid-connected photovoltaic generation system (PV system). PSCAD/EMIDC. an industry standard simulation tool for studying the transient behavior of electric power system and apparatus. is used to conduct all aspects of model implementation and to carry out extensive simulation study. An equivalent circuit model of a solar cell has been used for modeling solar array. A PWM voltage source inverter (VSI) and its current control scheme have been implemented. A maximum power point tracking (MPPT) technique is employed for drawing the maximum available energy from the PV array. Comprehensive simulation results are presented to examine PV array behaviors and PV system control performance in response to irradiation changes. In addition, dynamic responses of PV array and system to network fault conditions are simulated and analysed

  • Nonlinear dynamics of active piezolaminated plates are investigated with respect to the thermopiezoelastic behaviors. For largely deformed structures with small strain, the incremental total Lagrangian formulation is presented based on the virtual work principles. A multi field layer wise finite shell element is proposed for assuring high accuracy and non-linearity of displacement, electric and thermal fields. For dynamic consideration of thermopiezoelastic snap through phenomena, the implicit Newmark's scheme with the Newton-Raphson iteration is implemented for the transient response of various piezolaminated models with symmetric or eccentric active layers. The bifurcate thermal buckling of symmetric structural models is first investigated and the characteristics of piezoelectric active responses are studied for finding snap through piezoelectric potentials and the load path tracking map. The thermoelastic stable and unstable postbuckling, thermopiezoelastic snap through phenomena with several attractors are proved using the nonlinear time responses for various initial conditions and damping loss factors. Present results show that thermopiezoelastic snap through phenomena can result in the difficulty of buckling and postbuckling control of intelligent structures.

  • The dynamic interaction between the moving mass and the rotating Timoshenko shaft is investigated. The moving speed of the mass is presented by a constraint equation related to the rotating speed of the shaft. The dimensionless equations of motion for the rotating shaft with a moving mass by using the Timoshenko's beam theory. The dynamic responses of this system are studied. influences of dimensionless parameters such as the rotating speed ratio. the Rayleigh coefficient and the dimensionless axial force are discussed on the transient response and the maximum deflection of the moving system.

  • This paper introduces a fast Fourier transform (FFT)-based spectral dynamic analysis method for the transient responses as well as the steady-state responses of the linear discrete systems subject to non-zero initial conditions. The forced vibration of a viscously damped three-DOF system is considered as the illustrative numerical example. The proposed spectral analysis method is evaluated by comparing its results with the exact analytical solutions and the numerical solutions obtained by the Runge-Kutta method.

  • Our objective is to model static multi-cracking processes in concrete. The explicit dynamic relaxation (DR) method, which gives the solutions of non-linear static problems on the basis of the steady-state conditions of a critically damped explicit transient solution, is chosen to deal with the high geometric and material non-linearities stemming from such a complex fracture problem. One of the common difficulties of the DR method is its slow convergence rate when non-monotonic spectral response is involved. A modified concept that is distinct from the standard DR method is introduced to tackle this problem. The methodology is validated against the stable three point bending test on notched concrete beams of different sizes. The simulations accurately predict the experimental load-displacement curves. The size effect is caught naturally as a result of the calculation. Micro-cracking and non-uniform crack propagation across the fracture surface also come out directly from the 3D simulations.

  • For a vertical type crankshaft-journal bearing system used in scroll compressor, nonlinear transient response analysis is applied includung nonlinear fluid film reaction forces of journal beatings. By a connected behavior analysis of crankshaft and orbiting scroll, the radial clearance of scroll wraps is calculated. Considering tangential leakage for this clearance, a coupled analysis model for leakage and dynamic behavior of the orbiting scroll is made, and analyzed by iterative calculation. By regarding clearances of main, sub bearing of crankshaft and orbiting scroll shaft bearing clearance as design parameters, the radial clearance of scroll wraps is analyzed.

  • A new solution for the dynamic analysis of as asphalt concrete pavements under moving loads has been developed. The asphalt concrete pavement can be modeled in elastic or viscoelastic medium of multi-layered structure. The subgrade can be modeled as either a rigid base or a semi-infinite halfspace. The loads may be constant or arbitrary circular loads into one direction. The method utilizes the Complex Response Method of transient analysis with a continuum solution in the horizontal direction and a finite-element solution in the vertical direction. This proposed method incorporates such important factors as wave propagation, inertia and damping effects of the medium as well as frequency-dependent asphalt concrete properties. The proposed method has been validted with the full-scale field truck test, which was conducted on instrumented asphalt concrete section on a test track at PACCAR Technical Center in Mount Vernon, Washington. Comparison with field strain data from full-scale pavement tests has shown excellent agreement. Theoretical results have shown that the effect of vehicle speed is significant and that it is in part due to the frequency-dependent

  • Scroll compressor using a slide bushing type radial compliant crank mechanism is modelled, and it's dynamic behaviour characteristics are analyzed. Sealing forces generated in the flank surfaces of the orbiting scroll depending on the distance, e, from slide bushing center to crank pin center are calculated. From the stable condition of orbiting scroll for the moment equilibrium in tangential direction, the range of e is determined as 0$r_o$. Transient response of a crankshaft supported by two journal bearings is investigated, considering applied load, moment, and unbalance force by eccentric mass. As a result, conical whirl mode with circular orbits are obtained. The characteristics of journal orbits and frictional losses are calculated with a variation of viscosity and bearing clearance.

  • The main intention of this paper is to develop and compare the algorithm based on finite element procedures for nonlinear transient dynamic analysis which has combined effects of material and geometric nonlinearities. Incremental equilibrium equations based on the principle of virtual work are derived by the finite element approach. For the elasto - plastic large deformation analysis of shells and the determination of the displacement-time configuration under time-varying loads, the explicit, implicit and combined explicit-implicit time integration algorithm is adopted. In the time structure is selected and the results are compared with each others. Isoparametric 8-noded quadrilateral curved elements are used for shell structure in the analysis and for geometrically nonlinear elastic behaviour, a total Lagrangian coordinate system was adopted. On the other hands, material nonlinearity is based on elasto-plastic models with Von-Mises yield criteria. Thus, the combined explicit-implicit time integration algorithm is benefit in general case of shell structure, which is the result of this paper.
