  • This article describes the design and performance characteristics of a broadband ultrasonic mosaic transducer. We focus on the improved bandwidth in the high frequency band of a previously designed broadband ultrasonic transducer (Lee et al., 2014). The improvement in the pulse-echo bandwidth was achieved by employing twelve $2{\times}2$ element subarrays, operating at different resonance frequencies, and utilizing the mosaic array concept. We found that the -6 dB and -12 dB bandwidths of the newly developed broadband ultrasonic mosaic transducer, were up to 155% and 170% of the previously designed model, with a quality factor of 1.71 and 1.25, respectively. The averaged TVR (transmitting voltage response), SRT (receiving sensitivity), and FOM (figure of merit) values in a nearly flat transmitting response band, from 45 to 105 kHz providing a -12 dB bandwith of 60 kHz, were 163.3 dB (re $1{\mu}Pa/V$ at 1 m), -192.8 dB (re $1V/{\mu}Pa$), and -30.9 dB, respectively.

  • This work is aimed to develop a new type of the Push-Pull ultrasonic transducer that can provide higher sound pressure level and simpler internal structure than conventional types. The driving part of the newly designed transducer is positioned in the middle of the cylinder, and its optimum geometry is determined by using the FEM package, ANSYS. Through FEM model analysis, the effects of all of its geometrical variables such as transducer length, transducer radius, and the edge shape of the end cap have been examined, and the results have led to the optimum geometry. The newly designed transducer has been found to give better performance than that of traditional ones.

  • Torsional vibration is an important vibration mode when shafts, cylinders and pipes are considered. However, the modal testing of torsional vibrations is not an easy job to carry out because of the lack of proper transducers. This work presents a new torsional vibration transducer based on the magnetostrictive principle and its application to torsional modal testing. The transducer is so designed as to generate/measure only torsional vibrations excluding other vibration modes such as longitudinal and bending vibrations. The transducer is composed of ferromagnetic patches bonded to a test structure, permanent magnets, and a solenoid. Though patches and magnets are bonded to a structure, torsional vibrations are generated and measured wirelessly by a solenoid encircling a test structure. The proposed transducer works even at considerably high frequencies, say, tens of kilohertz. Furthermore, the transducer can be manufactured at a low price. To check the performance of the proposed method, the torsional modal testing on a hollow aluminum shaft was conducted. The results, such as eigenfrequencies, obtained by the proposed transducer agreed favorably with theoretical results.

  • Traditional magnetostrictive/piezoelectric laminate composites are generally in the regular geometries such as rectangles or disks. To explore properties of the irregular geometry magnetostrictive/piezoelectric transducer in the fundamental resonant frequency, a step dumb-bell shaped Magnetoelectric (ME) transducer is presented in this study. Both analytical and experimental investigations are carried out for the dumb-bell shaped transducer in the fundamental frequency. Comparing with the traditional rectangular transducer, the theory shows the resonant frequency of dumb-bell shaped transducer is reduced 31%, and the experiment gives the result of that is 37% which is independent of dc magnetic fields. The ratio of magnetoelectric voltage coefficient (MEVC) between the dumb-bell shaped and rectangular shaped transducers in theory is 66% comparing with that of in experiment is varying from 140% to 33% when the dc field is increased from 0 Oe to 118 Oe.

  • In SI engine research the pressure data in cylinder is the most important fundamental ones leading to engine efficiencies and performances. It is, therefore, necessary to obtain accurate pressure data and yet it is often impossible to install a reliable data producing, flush-mounted type pressure transducer in a cylinder of small and medium size multicylinder SI engines. When flush mounting the transducer is not possible, the spark-plug type pressure transducer is commonly used as an alternative. In this case, the transmission tube of spark-plug type pressure transducer introduces distortions in the pressure signal. Efforts were made to understand the dynamic characteristics of spark-plug pressure transducer by shock tube tests and real engine experiments. In engine experiment the cylinder pressure data were simultaneously obtained by both flush mounted and spark-plug type pressure transducers of certain transmission tube geometry. Those pressure data collected by spark-plug type pressure transducer were tested for correction to flush mounted ones by the application of transfer function. As a result of the calibration the IMEP difference between F/M data and improved S/P data was shown to be corrected about 75-98% from the original ones.

  • In this paper, the resonant characteristic of a Tonpilz transducer with a fixed tail mass has been researched and the feasibility to utilize the transducer in that resonant frequency has been analyzed. The additional resonance is occurred by adhering an elastic tube to the tail mass of a conventional Tonpilz transducer and fixing the other end of the tube. The characteristic of this low resonant mode is analyzed by means of the finite element method, then it is shown that this mode is affected by the variation of the stiffness of the tube as well as the mass of the head mass and tail mass. Based on the analysis results, the Tonpilz transducer is designed to meet specific performance conditions.

  • Implantable middle ear hearing devices (IMEHDs) have been widely studied as an alternative hearing aids to solve the problems of conventional hearing aids. Vibration transducer of middle ear hearing aids is a key component because vibration characteristics of transducer is directly involved performance of hearing aids. So, the study about middle ear hearing aids concentrate on the transducers. A floating mass type transducer is most efficient. In this paper, we suggest a lumped mechanical model of electromagnetic floating mass transducer implanted on human middle ear. The proposed model enables analysis of the vibration characteristics of a floating mass transducer and prediction of the variation after implant on ossicle that offers a simple and easy to analyze. The parameters was drawn based on the components and the structures of transducer. The Lumped mechanical model was converted by the electrical-mechanical equivalent model, and simulated using PSpice. So, we investigated vibration characteristics of transducer influenced it's components. And we predict vibration characteristics of stapes footplate due to implanted transducer's vibration using combining model of transducer and human ear. To prove the feasibility of the suggested model, we fabricated a differential floating mass transducer (DFMT) as one of floating mass transducers and performed experiments using the human temporal bones.

  • This paper presents a theoretical approach to describe the vibration characteristics of a piezoelectric shell transducer. Governing equations for the motion of the piezoelectric shell are classified and simplified according to the boundary conditions. Applied mechanical and electrical boundary conditions have yielded each characteristic equation for circumferential, longitudinal, and radial motions of the piezoelectric shell transducer. Theoretical calculations of the resonance frequencies have been compared with the results obtained by the experiment and have shown a good agreement.

  • In this paper, the ultrasonic transducer with a spherical liquid lens is designed and an efficient method to calculate the acoustic field radiated from the transducer is presented. A prototype ultrasonic transducer with a spherical liquid lens is constructed and tested. The experimental results are compared with those of the computer simulations and good agreements are achieved. The dynamic control of the geometric focus is obtained by adjusting the radius of curvature of the lens membrane with the volumetric control of the liquid in the lens.
