Korean traditional houses have been evolved and developed in many years, adopting the natural environment to control exterior conditions. These control method are various Passive system of using natural materials, considering micro climate, building lay out, and these system are much natural and ecological to make the comfortable indoor climate than active systems of the present houses. This study aims to analyzed the acoustical characteristics of Korean traditional houses varied with lay out and floor plan to reflect the way of control for environmental condition. The reverberation time and level difference between rooms of the main living room and other main floored room, master room and kitchen are measured in each houses. As a result, the reverberation time of Korean traditional rooms are below 0.6 second, and the sound insulation performance of Korean traditional door are mostly very low grade with D-15. The level difference between rooms are low grade not to meet minimum class except between main living room and master room away from main living building. These above results show that our traditional house are much more emphasized seeking visual privacy of rooms than aural privacy.
Koreans were started moving to Yunhaju in Russia for escaping from tyrannical rule and famine in 1860's in Korea. Social and political situation of Russia were made it very hard to get to know about Korean's life there so far. But it was known that Korean Diaspora has been kept traditional way of living in without contacts between Korea for 140 years. This study examined the dwellings of Korean Diaspora in Yunhaju through reviewing related documents and records firstly and had a time to visit places which Koreans lived since 1860's for example Posyet(equation omitted), Suifen(equation omitted), Ussuriisk(equation omitted), Vladivostok(equation omitted), Partizansk(equation omitted) and took interviews with Koreans who lived there pre 1930's. Results of research were as following : 1) A first place to settle down for Koreans in Yunhaju was Posye(equation omitted) and scattered as time goes by far away from there. 2) Koreans were helping each other for living and they had their own self managing organizations in village there. 3) The villages which was made in Yunhaju by Koreans in the beginning were similar to traditional ones in Korea. 4) It was verified that dwellings which was built by Koreans in Yunhaju were similar to ones in north area in Korea. At that time lots of Korean Diaspora came from north part and they kept their own traditional way of building houses there for a long time. 5) Korean Diaspora have been kept traditional heating system ‘Ondol’ in their various types of houses until now in Yunhaju. Moreover, it is known that Russians prefer to set ‘Ondol’ in their houses recently as a very special and expensive heating system. This study would be a very good opportunity to standing out Korean history of housing in Yunhaju as well as evaluating their identification as Koreans. For this, it is needed to take more deep research in specific areas which could see more various types of housing and could compare ones between two countries.

These control method are various passive system of using natural materials, considering micro climate, building lay out, and these system are more natural and ecological to make the comfortable indoor climate than active systems of the present houses. This study aims to analyzed control performance of outdoor environment of five Korean traditional houses during the summer and winter. These houses are varied with lay out and floor plan to reflect the way of control for environmental condition, surveyed the reverberation time and sound level difference between rooms of the main living room and other main floored room, master room and kitchen. Especially air temperature and humidity have been measured simultaneously in each rooms to compare with outdoor condition. As a result, the variation of air temperature and humidity of most rooms are considerably static while condition of outdoors are much varied, it is showed that indoor climate has been controled with traditional soiled walls.
This study aims to analyzed the acoustics characteristics of Korean Traditional Houses in Chonnam Province varied with lay out and floor plane to reflect the way of control for environmental condition. These houses are surveyed the reverberation time and level difference between rooms of the main living room and other main floored room, master room and kitchen. As a result, the reverberation time of traditional rooms are below 0.6 second, and the sound insulation performance of Korean traditional door are mostly very low grade with D-15. A study on the traditional houses of North Korea(I) have been published in 1996. This paper is written to supplement the preceding paper. This paper aims at collecting new data of traditional house in North Korea. But still being prohibited for the researchers of South Korea to approach to the field, I had to depend on the memories and experiences of the immigrants from North Korea who are now living in Kangwon and Incheon Province. Through the questionnaire and drawings, they described vivid memory of their old houses. I was able to add new data of 70 cases, which are significant and valuable as much as those of the real field are. Those data, including the exisiting data, are enough for me to analize statstically the regional charateristics, the differnces among economical classes, and the periodical change. It opens the way for verfying the existing theory. Regional charateristics of house in North Korea can be described as followings: a. Hamkyong-do ; Concentrating spaces into one building, Double-fold type plan, Including 'cheongju-kan' space, Weak fences b. Pyongan-do ; Concentrating spaces into two buildings, 二 shape buildings , Single-fold type plan, Strong fence c. Pyongannam-do to Myolak mountains; Concentraing spaces into two buildings, ㄱ, ㄷ shape buildings, Single-fold type plan, Strong fence d. Southern area of Myolak mountains; Concentrating spaces into one building ㅁ shape building, Single-fold type plan with wooden floor space
Since 1971 when the nation wide 'New Community' movement was launched to improve rural standards of living, dol and thatched-roof houses have been reshaped or removed, thereby making it hard to find time-honored people's living structures in the countryside. Since 1977, the improvement work of rural houses has started throughout the country, so many new rural residences have been constructing along the highway, main roads, railways and around the sightseeing area, New rural houses do not show, for the most part, the traditional architectural style and the nation's unique conventional ways of living. The writer tried to find solutions to the problems derived from improvement work of rural residence, in a comparative method of traditional rural houses and newly constructed rural ones. The greater part of new rural houses' types, painting colors, and fence types had been recommended by provincial administrative trative officials. Officials recommended them to the farmer with their standards, which did not consider farmer's convenience of traditional way of life, but a fine sight from the highways or railways. Korea's three basic roof types are the HAPKAK roof (gabled and hipped), the UCHINKAK roof(hipped), and the BAKKOONG roof(gabled). However, the gabled roof houses, having their entrance on the gabled side, are found more ofter in new rural village. As mentioned above, architectural style is not harmonious with the topography and climate i Korea, because it is not Korean traditional type, but one of the western styles. And new rural house plans are inconvenient in the conservation rural family system, because of the same category with urban houses plans. Other problems derived from ton-traditional architecture style are roof painting in 4-5 colors in a new village, types of wall and fence, and attached building in the site.
This paper, based on the filed survey conducted from August 14 to 21, 2000, examines the architectural characteristics of traditional dwellings of Sujeonchon(수전촌, 水田村) village. Sujeonchon village is located on the northen slope of Changbaishan Mt., Andohyun(안도현, 安圖縣) of jilin Province(吉林省), a province in the northeastern region of China. The village was established between late 1940's and early 1950's by the Korean-Chinese. Later on, some of the Korean-Chinese residents moved out of the village and presently, the residents are composed of both the Korean-Chinese and the Chinese consisting about fifty-fifty. Since the cultural background and the living custom are different from each other ethnic group, that is, the Korean-Chinese and the Chinese, their dwellings reveal some differences between them. Through the study, the architectural characteristics and distinctions of the Korean-Chinese and Chinese dwellings are found and summarized as follows: 1.The way of building layout is different between them: the Chinese mainly follows the north-south direction of building layout, while the Korean-Chinese considers the surrounding environmental condition. 2.The floor level of kitchen is different between them: that of the Chinese house is same as the outdoor earth level, while that of the Korean-Chinese is lower than the outdoor level. 3.The way of providing the kitchen space is different between them: the kitchen of the Chinese house is consist of one separate room, while that of the Korean-Chinese is open to the living area. 4.The way of heating system is different between them: the Chinese house has kang only at the sleeping area, while the Korean-Chinese install whole under-floor heating of gudeul in the living area. 5.The attitude to the way of building is different between them: the Chinese are easily adapt to the new building materials and construction method, while the Korean-Chinese are showing strong attachment to the traditional way of building. 6.The houses of the Chinese and the Korean-Chinese have their own traditional ornaments and talismans on and in the building.
Most of the Korean Diaspora who lived in Yunhaeju moved to Central Asia in 1937 following the deportation policy of Russia. The Korean Diaspora has maintained the traditional way of living for 140 years without a deep relationship with Korea. This study examined the dwellings of the Korean Diaspora of Kazakhstan in Central Asia through visiting their houses and conducting interviews. The results of the research were as follows. 1) The houses of the Korean Diaspora in Kazakhstan in early times consisted of Jungjigan which has Gudle and one bedroom. Gudle is the most traditional element of the Korean Diaspora's house and it is generally used as a place to gather family members. 2) The Korean Diaspora's houses in Kazakhstan were basically built according to Russian style but with a slightly different way of living inside. 3) The changing process of planning and building code of apartments in Kazakhstan is similar to that in Russia and other CIS nations. 4) Korean's food style is one mixed with Korean, Russian and Central Asian foods and Kimchi and Jang(bean paste) are the essential elements for most Koreans. 5) Koreans are very active to develop a relationship with Kazaks, Uighurs, and Russians and this enables the exchange of their culture eventually. This study is the first step to supply basic information for study of the Korean Diaspora in Central Asia and deeper research is necessary with a wide range in Russia.
The Yoon Jeung residence is a well-known and prototypical aristocratic house example showing typical and interesting characteristics of the traditional houses in the middle region of Korea. When it comes to understanding the architectonic characteristics of a Korean traditional house, it was not easy to actually capture the compositional and/or constructional knowledge of the building even though it is a wooden building with many wooden members showing their compositional relations. Now with the help of the BIM tool, the Building Information Modeling tool, we could actually be able to compare and analyze each member and their compositional relations. In this paper we examine the unique traditional composition method used in extending the building's structural sections utilizing the bended-joint characteristics of traditional buildings with exemplar case of the Yoon Jeung residence. Thereby we examine those relationships among three major compositional parts namely the plan based spatial compositions, the upper wooden compositions and the roof forms so as to specify the building's typical characteristics with reasonably acceptable causes. The inner and outer block of the residence are handled with their bended-joints with more detailed knowledge of categorization by way of joint relationships among members.
The "Eco-friendly", "Green" concepts was began around 1992 after the Rio Environmental Summit, and the need for sustainable development globally widespread. The green building certification system was began around 2000 and the concept of green building was started in the late 1990s. The green building, which welcomes a period of radical change, is for the survival of the Earth "climate change" and reducing energy consumption in building sector. In this architecture of eco-friendly concept, the green building is rapidly expanding and existing as a ecological environment preservation. Moreover, the realization of zero energy house is to mandate for new buildings in 2025. The aim of further eco-friendly is through the prior ecosystems to restore and product energy for the 9 Green Building model houses in this paper. Building in the concept of ecology is to show about change into 7R's from the 3R's. The "Reduce", "Reuse", "Recycle" consisting of "3R's" is correlated with the traditional to the present Green Building Design. U.S. NCARB (National Council of Architectural Registration Boards) change into the concept of 7R's as "Receive", "Restore", "Respect" and "Remember", added to "3R's". In this paper, the 9 Green Building model houses do not meet the criteria of 7R's. But, the Green Tomorrow of Samsung C & T Corporation meet the 6 criteria for 7R's. This company is most comfortable at low carbon Green Building model houses. Conclusionally, introduction of eco-friendly technologies and amenities for the health of human and natural community life is to advance eco-friendly construction and enhance brand value of housing. By the way, The problem of eco-friendly architecture is initial investment and maintenance. Therefore, eco-friendly architecture and government has to try solving of this difficulty.
