Landscape Characteristic and Its Background of the Fallingwater Design by Frank Lloyd Wright (프랭크 로이드 라이트의 낙수장 디자인에 내재하는 조경적 특성과 그 형성 배경)

  • The Fallingwater, one of Wright's best designs, is known as a good example of "Organic Architecture". Its landscape characteristics are harmonious relationship between architecture and landscape, adaptable siting, composition of spatial and visual structure, floating spaceness, interlocking of water and house, dramatic approach, and vernacular material use. This characteristics had begun from the Prairie architecture, but also had influenced by the culture and art of the Far East. He was open to foreign cultures. Staying in Japan for years, he had travelled China, too. In this process, he might be exposed to Korean art and culture which were under Japan at that time. Comparing the front image of the Songkwang Temple to that of the Fallingwater, their compositions between architecture, water, and landscape are so similar to each other. They are also close to each other in terms of spatial structure. Therefore the landscape characteristics found in the Fallingwater design are more similar to Korean landscape architectural characteristics than Japanese ones. Therefore we are going to suggest the hypothesis that Wright is influenced by Korean landscape design in the design of the Fallingwater. Considering his impact upon the design world, it will be significant if the concept of Korean traditional landscape design is placed behind his design of the great architecture.hitecture.

Study on the Coexistent Development of the Touristic and Educational Cultures of Temples - Focused on Youngwol region - (사찰건물의 관광 및 교육문화를 위한 상생발전 연구 - 영월지역을 중심으로 -)

  • The purpose of this study is to study the coexistent development of the touristic and education cultures of temples. For the study, an investigation on the actual conditions of temples in Youngwol and a set of interviews were conducted from 13th June to 7th November in 2014. The analysis was conducted through the field observations and the interviews with building owners based on the criteria and SPSSWIN 18.0 program was used for statistical processes. The results of analysis are as follows. First, the temples are found to be the extremely valuable local cultural assets with the cultural values and historical backgrounds. Second, the major temple buildings show that they have the unique and distinct characteristics that cannot be found from other general temples, so it is necessary for developing the unique local tourism resources from them. Third, since the study shows that there is a lack of tourism and educational culture resources, so a relevant plan thereof is urgently required. The implication of this study is that there is an urgent necessity for the succession and the modern reinterpretation regarding the cultures of traditional temples, based on which a shift of viewpoint to the digital tourism, which covers both the traditional temple cultures and the modern cultures, could arise.

A Study on the Borrowed Landscape of Arbors and Temples in Jeonbuk Province (전북지역 樓亭 및 寺刹의 借景에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to identify the characteristics and differences of borrowed landscape in traditional arbors and temples in Jeonbuk province. And this study is attempted to widespread the width of understanding the traditional landscape borrowing method for contributing in modem reception and creation of landscape architectural culture. For this, 30 traditional arbors and 30 traditional temples in Jeonbuk province were selected. The orientation of the place of view point, distance, vertical and horizontal angle were surveyed for identifying the structure of borrowed landscape. Furthermore main element, auxiliary element and a media of borrowed landscape were surveyed also. Two hypothesis were established for verifying the feasibility and real effectiveness of research results. First, the willingness of borrowed landscape shall be being in establishing traditional arbors and temples. Second, this willingness of borrowed landscape shall be accomplished in arbor space more positively than in temple space. The results of this study are as follows; 1. In temples, the surrounding landscape adapted in Buddhism principles are principally expressed, whereas in arbors, congregating landscape, variety landscape, background landscape for establishing good view point and enframed landscape are induced for making authoritative landscape as various borrowed landscape techniques. 2. The distance to borrowed landscape in temples is involved in far landscape region, whereas that in arbors is in middle and near. In comparative with temples, the arbors shows variety in distance to the borrowed landscape objects. 3. Down view borrowing is used generally in arbors, whereas upper view borrowing is used in temples at the view angle to the borrowed landscape objects. 4. Borrowed landscape objects are more considered factors than view scope in arbors. Main elements for borrowing landscape are very various arbors, but those are simple as mountains and peaks in temples. And natural elements are much more than artificial things in arbors as a media of borrowing landscape in comparative with temples.

Consideration of Making Techniques for Red Painted Roof Tiles from Presumed Site of Daetongsa in Gongju Using Nondestructive Analysis (비파괴 분석을 활용한 공주 대통사 추정지 출토 주칠흔 기와의 제작기술 검토)

  • The Daetongsa temple is the earliest temple to be constructed during the era of the Three Kingdoms in ancient Korea. The main architect, purpose, and name of the temple have been confirmed through ancient literature and archeological materials carved in the Chinese letter, Daetong, excavated around Gongju. However, the location and range of the temple have remained elusive and were discussed in various studies. In this study, we examine the roof tiles obtained from the presumed site of the Daetongsa temple. The tiles were found to contain traces of red paint (red pigments) on their surface and analyzed using nondestructive techniques. The results imply that roof tiles were made using clay tablets and wooden cylinders, with latticed cloth in between. Additionally, some wooden cylinders appeared to comprise numerous wooden plates tied together by strings. The clay tablets used to make the roof tiles were produced from the source clay via the sorting process. The traces of red paint on the surface of the roof tiles were verified to be traditional pigments used for painting wooden buildings. These pigments were extracted from red ocher or red clay (Seokganju), mainly consisting of iron oxide. In the literature, the location of provenance sites for Seokganju is estimated to be far from Gongju. However, the materials for extracting the red pigments were relatively easy to source because most rocks comprised iron oxides. Therefore, it is necessary to discuss the provenance of the red pigments around the presumed site of Daetongsa.

Traditional Korean landscape garden with special attention (역사적 문화환경의 창조 -고대정원문화를 중심으로-)

  • Korean Landscape Garden may be described according to its stage of development. In the primitive agricultural era, the garden was preceded by vegetable yards and at this time rock arranging (Soo-Sok garden) was initiated together with the megalithis culture of dolmens, heavenly altars and tumuli. In the early Three Kingdom period palace gardens were built on a grand scale and toward the end of fourth century temple garden were introduced along with Buddhism. These gardens evolved to the flourishment of "HWAGE"(terraced gardens) rock arrangements of ZEN, early KOR-YO period. Especially since the middle of KOR-Yo period the "IM-CHUN"(forest and pond) garden became popular, while during Cho-Son period "HWAGE" in the back yard, pond and pool garden and "IM-CHUN" style country villa became fashionable. The Korea traditional Landscape garde may be characterized that first it is a nature Landscape style, which makes the maximum accomodation with the surrounding nature. Secondly, the Korean garden is built creatively by utilizing the elements of its climate and topography, Kogu-Ryo, Paik-Je great-Kaya and Sil-Ra had developed original a castle town plans and beautiful gardens rock arrangements which precede the equivalent style of China and set the prototype for Japan. The Landscape art of waterfalls and rock arrangements at An-Ap-Chi garden of 7th century has no equals in China and set the origin of pond style of Japanese garden.

On the Characteristics of Buddhist Temples with Korean National cultural properties in Kum Kang(Kum-river) Area (금강지역의 불교건축특징)

  • The aim of this research is to find-out the characteristics of Buddhist temples with relevant to Korean National cultural properties in Kum Kang(Kum-river) area. This analysis is accomplished by setting up the speciflc viewpoints where the charateristics can be perceived, and by measuring the form and angle from these points to the buddist culture ; 124 items were selected and analyzed by the comparative method. The most Important research finding is that both Traditonal Korean Temple and Kum Kang(Kum-river) Area site conceptualized and used a certain geometrical Feng-shui(geomancy) order in the disposition of mountain and river side according to the principles of human cognition. The conclusions are as follows ; Buddhist culture and the Characteristics of Buddhist temples in Kum Kang(Kum-river) Area having accumulated from the past and are the cultural complex and mixture of 7 elements. They also reflect cultural situations of each time period. The temples are a result of Korean traditional thought and spirit, as well as, regarding tradition as an important factor.

Cultural Symbolism and Acculturation of Temple Plants in China: Focused on 'Bodhi Tree'

  • Background and objective: Plants in temples are the results of cultural symbolization that embraces the experience and enlightenment of humans about life. As a way to improve the acceptance of the foreign religion, China gave cultural symbolization to plants in temple gardens through integration with traditional cultures and the understanding of the nature of plants themselves. This study aimed to identify cultural symbolism and signs of acculturation associated with Buddhist plants, targeting Bolisu, the most essential and symbolic plant in temple garden forests in China and Korea. Methods: The morphological and ecological characteristics of plants, functions, the texts that contained the history of Buddhism and literary works were examined through literature review, and the relation of Ficus religiosa with its planting conditions and nature, and Buddhist culture was explored. In addition, the cultural value of Buddhist plants themselves in establishing temples and the reason why Bolisu was planted in temples were reviewed through time series analysis. The obtained results were interpreted using an inductive method to identify substitutes for F. religiosa, cultural symbolism and signs of acculturation. Results: F. religiosa as one of the three holy trees and the five trees and six flowers in Buddhism is known as the original Bolisu. Since it grows well and is widely distributed in regions that accepted Indian Buddhism, it became the most representative holy tree in Buddhism. From the perspective of tree shape and nature, F. religiosa is in line with the Buddhist spirit of saving those in need with mercy and redeeming mankind, and figuratively shows that perfection can be attained like the fruit of Bolisu. Chines Buddhism had adopted highly symbolic plants for a long period of time as a means to spread the same belief and doctrines as Indian Buddhism. In China, however, there were only limited areas suitable for the growth of F. religiosa, and for this reason, borrowed Bolisu trees including Tilia. miqueliana, T. mandshurica and T. amurensis and other plants such as F. virens Ait. var. sublanceolata, G. biloba and M. alba were planted as a substitute in most regions, having been given with symbolism and belief as Bolisu. Conclusion: Chinese Buddhism planted the same plants as Indian Buddhism in order to enhance symbolism and also similar substitutes to express the same symbolism. This is a kind of acculturation and its influence and customs were not limited to China, but were introduced to Korea, The difference between China and Korea was that G. biloba was excluded from the substitute for Bolisu in Korea.

A Study on the Constructional Characteristics of Jeju-HyangGyo (제주향교의 조영적 특성에 관한 연구)

  • This study was performed to ascertain how HyangGyos based on national ideology were built in Jeju Island and what their detailed styles are. In Jeju-HyangGyo, unique architectural characteristics are shown as they have been built in an island independent from the mainland. Also up-down system was well reflected in detailed architectural styles. The main temple of Jeju-HyangGyo was built in the type of one-Chulmok(a subsidiary material of Gongpo and a piece of wood to support the eaves) of which ancon supports a purline from the center of a pillar and two-Ikgong(a piece of wood engraved to put on an ancon), but in the case of the lecture hall, its Gongpo(a piece of wood to support the eaves) was inferior in quality. In the case of Jeju abutments were used in main temples and fire walls were mostly used. In particular, their abutments are difficult to be observed in HyangGyo in the mainland. It is presumed that the abutment and the fire wall used in Jeju Island might be the best solution to protect structures from rain and moisture. To sum up, local characteristics and traditional rules were thoroughly reflected in Jeju-HyangGyos built in Jeju Island from the aspect of arrangement and detailed style. In conclusion, it is significant that architectural styles, not to mention the other aspects of Jeju culture, were suitably adapted to Jeju Island.

Study on the Realization of Tourism Culture Welfare by Using Confucius Heritage - Based on Confucian Buildings - (유교유산을 활용한 관광문화복지 구현에 대한 연구 - 유교건물을 중심으로 -)

  • The present study investigates the realization of tourism culture welfare by using Confucian heritage. From June 13 to November 7, 2014, site surveys and interviews were conducted for hyanggo (hyanggo: Confucian temple and school to teach students in Joseon Dynasty period), seowon (seowon: a memorial hall for Confucianist services to honor distinguished scholars and statesmen) and nujung (nujung: outdoor pavilion or gazebo) located in Youngwol -gun. Questionnaire pertaining to site survey and in-depth interviews for the building owners and managers was used to collect necessary data and scientific investigation was performed for analysis. As a result, the historical background was found to be culturally valuable asset for both region's tourism and culture welfare. Secondly, hyanggyo and seowon were found to exhibit traditional Confucius cultural form, while nujung exhibited a rare architectural trait. Hence it seems necessary to develop a different social tourism resource specialized for nujung. Thirdly, the rendering of Confucius heritages to tourism culture welfare resources thus far seems to be insufficient; hence, development and operation of marketing programs will be necessary. The implications of the present study require succession and modern reinterpretation of Confucian heritages for further development into digital tourism that will encompass Confucian culture and today's culture. Furthermore, studies of the tourism culture welfare policies that will promote the co-existence with the region will be needed.

  • China is a country with large agricultural areas and subject to frequent calamities. Drought is the top of them. It has been a key problem for development of agriculture in the country. In the long struggle against drought, Chinese have accumulated many rational and irrational experiences. The Dragon Kings Belief, which is popular in North China and discussed in a thesis, is one of their irrational experiences. The belief was passed together with Buddhism from India to China in the Tang Dynasty. After it settled down, it was incorporated with the local five dragons belief and a set of beliefs in dragon kings came into existence. The emergence of the dragon kings belief ended the history that the title of rain got was not clear in China and Dragon kings finally got the status. Irrigation is the lifeblood of agriculture in China. In a Chinese mind, Dragon kings are the most important gods who take charge of rain and thus offer the lifeblood. In understanding the nature and characteristics of Chinese traditional culture, it is important for us to make clear the origin and evolution of the belief, find out its nature, function and operation. In the every year beginning of February of the Fanzhuang calendar in the people of Hebeisheng Zhaoxian, would all hold a festival to offer sacrifices to the $^{{\circ}TM}^{\prime}longpai$. Longpai was regarded as the core of the temple fair, thus the native sons came to call this festival; "longpaihui". In this region the'Fanzhuang longpaihui'developed into a well knownand grand temple fair. It was able to attract numerous pilgrims with its special magic power, occupying a place in $China^{{\circ}TM}$ 'eryueer'festival with festive dragon activities. The dragon is a common totem among Chinese nationals. The belief worship of the dragon dates from the start time of primitive societies. Dragon oneself the ancients worship's thunder lightning. In the worship of the great universe, at first afterwards this belief with the tribe's totem worships to combine to become the animal spirit. In ancient myths legends, along with folk religion and beliefs all hold a very important position. The longpaihui is a temple fair without a temple; this characteristic is a distinction between longpaihui and other temple fairs. As for longpaihui must of the early historical records are unclear. The originator of a huitou system has a kind of organized form of the special features rather, originator of a huitou not fix constant, everything follows voluntarily principle, can become member with the freedom, also can back at any time the meeting.
