Analysis of Korean Traditional Records Information System (국내 전통기록물 정보시스템 현황 조사)

  • Traditional records information system has greatly improved accessibility to users by providing internet access to the digitized form of traditional records, access to which have previously been restricted for the purpose of preservation. This study investigated the accessibility and serviceability of Korean traditional records by examining current traditional record information systems in Korea. After compiling a list of traditional records information systems, which were grouped by operating agency, we analyzed them by coverage period, document type, and content format as well as examining search options and browse categories. We also categorized and examined the information systems by user type. The result showed that out of 105 traditional records information systems serving various content types and services, only a fraction(16.1%) provide a comprehensive information that includes bibliographic information, annotated description, content image, content text, and translated text, and less than a half(49.5%) provide a detailed search, all of which point to a less than optimal conditions for access to traditional records and suggest a strong need for improved traditional records information systems in Korea.

  • The traditional ritual foods of Korea have developed with for many years, and differ by locality, family customs and religious characteristics. In an efforts to establish the database on that addresses the difficult issue of a classification system for traditional Korean foods, we have conducted a survey of a traditional Korean ritual foods. In the database, typical 10 rites are represented, covering birth to death, these are birth, the hundredth day after birth, the first birthday, the commemoration of finishing books(graduation), the coming of age ceremony, marriage, the birthday feast for an old man, the 60th wedding anniversary, the funeral, and the memorial service. For each rite, the appropriate traditional Korean foods are classified into 6 categories-main dishes, side dishes, tteok lyou, hangwa lyou, eumchung lyou and the others. Some of these have varied considerably with the passage of time, and some have since disappeared. This database provides a basis for generational transmission, preservation and development of traditional Korean ritual foods as one of the components traditional Korean culture.

  • The purpose of this study is to explore the possibility of the planning method of traditional market as the urban public open space and to attempt to create the essential reformation of traditional market place. The design concepts of the Moran traditional market project are establishing module system based on function of traditional market to accomplish the practical needs of vendor and consumer and expressing the liquid and autonomic characteristics of Moran traditional market to find the new and substantial schemes of public open space. The functional design module of the market place is based on 2.1m $\times$ 2.1m grid system which is minium market unit, and it is extended to 8.4m $\times$ 8.4m basic structural module and to 50.4m $\times$ 50.4m plaza unit.

  • This study has investigated fire safety rules related with traditional temples and main fire causes and cases to traditional temples among traditional wooden buildings so has analyzed fire vulnerability, and through a field probe of three traditional temples in Eunpyeonggu Seoul which have cultural properties, has analyzed geographical conditions, going out path spot reaching time required of a fire brigade, fire protection system, fire prevention administration and security system, factors of fire vulnerability, and has presented about fire safety plans of traditional temples.

  • Objectives: Because of the characteristics of traditional Korean medicine, there are few overseas patents and SCI papers. Researchers are struggling to analyze the research trend using existing patent analysis system and paper analysis system. We aim to build up a web-based paper map analysis system for Traditional Korean Medicine to improve the situation. Methods: We studied the following three sub topics. First, we surveyed the research trend analysis method for traditional Korean medicine. Second, we designed a paper map analysis model and made the algorithm for it. Finally, the development of the paper map analysis system was conducted. Results: We developed a web-based paper map analysis system which has the three main functions being analysis chart, topology map and contour map. For the rich internet application, we used the flex development tool and java integrated development environment. Conclusion: We will provide our paper map analysis system in the OASIS through the minor changes to provide easy use. We hope that this system will be a useful tool to analyze the research trends for traditional Korean medicine.

  • Despite the development of information and communication technology, which has a great impact on society and culture, there is no platform that provides a systematic classification and state-of-the-art information retrieval system on the traditional culture. Therefore, this paper developed a traditional culture retrieval system capable of convergence services with systematic classification and retrieval based on automatically generate and visualize the 3D timeline. This system provides the function of collecting traditional culture contents, classifying and storing collected traditional culture contents, and automatically generating 3D digital timeline based on stored traditional culture contents. In addition, a system satisfaction questionnaire was developed to evaluate the usability of the system, and 19 students participated in verifying the system. As a result of the experiment, the satisfaction of the system showed that all items were 'satisfied' on average.

  • As network resources have become faster and demands for multimedia service through network have increased, the demand for Media server system has increased. These kinds of media server solve their bottle neck problem of internal storage device by using parallel system which takes advantage of fast network resource. Many vendors have suggested each of their media server system to solve these problem radically, but most of them require major modification of infra component and additional drawback has added. For example, storage mechanism for specific media requires new file system which is totally different from traditional one, and algorithm for enhancing performance may not suit for traditional operating system environment. In this paper, we designed a parallel media server based on web interface of traditional system and implemented a program for media server. Implemented server system performs parallel processing through web interface without any modification of traditional system, and controls which is related to merging load by distributed data is charged only to client and control server and consequently load of storage server can be minimized. And also, data transfer protocol for streaming media includes Retransfer algorithm and client Admission control policy relevant to performance of whole system.

  • Sign system currently used for traditional heritage villages in Korea does not have any well-defined concept and method so that somewhat improper signs can be developed like for general urban or tourism area. In this paper, we present a new method or guideline of sign system based on DPD(disaster prevention design) concept for our traditional heritage villages. We can enhance both safety of residents and satisfaction of visitors throughout this guideline. According to our investigations on the heritage villages, sign systems in Korea are mainly developed for tourism, on the other hand, sign development in Japan mainly focuses on prevention or protection against big disasters like earthquakes. Considering residents and their safety, we can submit a proper guideline to develop sign system for our traditional heritage villages based on the concept of DPD which can be applied to each space. Asan 'Oeam Village' and Beppu 'Onsen Village' are used as application sites compared between Korea and Japan.

  • Jeju-do is a volcanic island located off the shore of the Korean peninsula facing the Pacific Ocean. The traditional housing styles of the Jeju Province, therefore, reflect the impact of these natural backgrounds and reveal different housing styles that are distinctive from those of mainland Korea. The purpose of this research is to analyze the peculiarities of the Ondol (floor heating system) and the kitchen space of traditional housing of Jeju Island in terms of lifestyles. This study shall employ two research methods: a literature review and field survey methods. The literature review shall focus on the observations of characteristics noted in previous studies of Jeju's private houses. The field survey shall employ field survey and interview methods originating from the ethnography of the culturological-anthropologist approach. (1) The Jeju-do Ondol system is a “Weibang-eudul” system which means one Gudul per fire hole. (2) The definition of terms for Gulmook show variations depending on the various regions on Jeiu-do. (3) Major facilities in Jeongji include Gulmook, Sotduck, and Busup. Gulmook is a heating facility and Sotduck refers to a cooking facility; Busup refers to a combination of heating, cooking, and illuminating facilities.

  • Many traditional architectures of Korea were lost due to fire accident caused by various reasons. It has been reported that faulty electric facility is the major cause of fire. Protecting and preserving the traditional architectures under current management system and electric facility regulation are difficult. Therefore establishing early stage fire extinguishment process and management system is urgent as well as eliminating the cause of fire.
