  • This paper proposes a method for determining material property of a haptic model which represents the haptic behavior of a target object. This paper also presents a haptic rendering framework. We adapt elastography to obtain the physical property of a target object. One of the key differences between the proposed framework and a traditional method is that the physical property of the target object can be easily set into a haptic model. For evaluating the proposed method, we construct a real-time palpation prototype simulator. In our work, a human liver is selected as a target object and the liver is represented by Shape-retaining Chain Linked Model(S-chain model) for satisfying the real-time performance. We conduct experiments whether a user easily distinguishes abnormal portions from normal portions. From the experimental results, we evaluate that the proposed method provides the discriminable force to users in real-time.

  • Trees enhance slope stability against down slope mass movement through the removal of soil water by transpiration and by the mechanical reinforcement of their roots. To assess the magnitude of this reinforcement on natural slope stability, direct shear tests were made on dry sand reinforced with different array types of roots. Pinus koraiensis was used as root specimens. The peak shear resistance at each normal stress level was measured on the rooted and unrooted soil specimens. Increased soil resistance(${\Delta}S$) by roots was calculated using parameters like internal friction angle and cohesion of tested soil and also evaluated the effects of root array in tested soil. As results, we find that shear resistance increased in tested soil shear box as diameters and arrayed numbers of root specimen increased and cross root array in tested soil had a much greater reinforcing effect than other root arrays. Comparison of traditional root-soil model with experiments showed that simulated reinforce strength by the model was different with those obtained by the experiment due to its linearity.

  • 3D formed Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) and hole EDM were conducted for die and mold manufacturing with electrodes which were made by mechanical machining and wire EDM. It is difficult to machine the hardened material after heat treatment and quenching with traditional machining. The only method of machining hardened material is die-sinking EDM. In this research, hole EDM was conducted for heat-treated cold-worked tool steel (SKD11) for use as a die material. The EDM surfaces were analyzed by pulse-on time and peak current of EDM current, according to the machining conditions of EDM. The EDM surface profiles were affected by the peak current. The contribution of each factor is peak current (91.63%) and pulse-on time (0.93%). The best surface roughness was obtained with a $130{\mu}s$ pulse-on time and a 14.2 A peak current. With uniform EDM processing, the surface deteriorated with increasing pulse-on time and peak current. The thickness of the solidified layer induced by EDM was increased as the peak current, crater shapes, and erupted shapes of EDM surfaces were increased. Therefore, microcracking gaps induced by surface tension were increased.

  • Swollen and painful extremities have been treated with herbal baths in attempts to alleviate the symptoms. A popular herbal bath used in China, contains a component called 'bone-penetrating herb' which is believed to facilitate the penetration of herbal substances across the skin to the swollen site, so swollen site, so that pain and swelling will be improved. A search from the Chinese pharmacopedia revealed that 22 different herbs have been traditionally used as 'bone-penetrating herb'. Five of these herbs were available in market and were chosen for experimental studies. Standard diffusion experiments were done to identify the most effective herb among the five, in the penetration facilitation. Glechoma longituba at a concentration of 20% was found to give the best results in the facilitation of Bromophenol blue diffusion across artificial and biological membranes. When compared with one commonly used diffusion facilitator, viz. azone, azone was found to be more effective than glechoma longituba. The encouraging observations support future studies on the basic science behind the use of herbal components as topical agents to treat pain and swelling.

  • We implement automobile license plates recognition system. These days automobile license plate recognition systems are widely used for tracing stolen cars. managing parking facilities, ticketing speeding cars, and so on. Recognition systems largely consist of three parts plates extraction, segments extraction, and segment recognition. For plates extraction, we measure the degree of inclination of plate. We use filters that extract only the horizontal components of the front of an automobile to measure the degree of inclination. For segment extraction, we trace the change of the number of blocks that consist solely of foreground pixels or background pixels as the horizontal scanning line moves along upward. For recognition of each individual letter or digit, we devise a variant of template matching method, called comparative template matching. Through experiments, we show that comparative template matching is less prone misled by noises and exhibits higher performance compared to the traditional method of template matching or histogram based recognition.

  • The traditional way of access to image information is through descriptive keyword searching. However, many studies in image indexing and retrieval have reached a consensus on the difficulties and limitations of text-base image description. This research investigates the feasibility of using visual browsing that is being used comparatively much less than keyword searching. The effectiveness of Keyword access versus visual access were examined through experiments in which participants searched for pictures of specified emotions using different access modes: keywords only, visual browsing only, and the combination of both. It was found that keyword searching was appropriate for clean searches while visual browsing was the effective way to browse many pictures quickly, thus finding more relevant pictures. Findings and results can guide of images retrieval systems, especially the retrieval system of subjective and interpretive information.

  • Sinomenium acutum has been long used in the preparations of traditional medicine in Japan, China and Korea for the treatment of various disorders including rheumatism, fever, pulmonary diseases and mood disorders. Recently, it was reported that Sinomenium acutum, has sedative and anxiolytic effects mediated by GABA-ergic systems. These experiments were performed to investigate whether sinomenine (SIN), an alkaloid derived from Sinomenium acutum enhances pentobarbital-induced sleep via ${\gamma}$-aminobutyric acid (GABA)-ergic systems, and modulates sleep architecture in mice. Oral administration of SIN (40 mg/kg) markedly reduced spontaneous locomotor activity, similar to diazepam (a benzodiazepine agonist) in mice. SIN shortened sleep latency, and increased total sleep time in a dose-dependent manner when co-administrated with pentobarbital (42 mg/kg, i.p.). SIN also increased the number of sleeping mice and total sleep time by concomitant administration with the sub-hypnotic dosage of pentobarbital (28 mg/kg, i.p.). SIN reduced the number of sleep-wake cycles, and increased total sleep time and non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep. In addition, SIN also increased chloride influx in the primary cultured hypothalamic neuronal cells. Furthermore, protein overexpression of glutamic acid decarboxylase ($GAD_{65/67}$) and $GABA_A$ receptor subunits by western blot were found, being activated by SIN. In conclusion, SIN augments pentobarbital-induced sleeping behaviors through $GABA_A$-ergic systems, and increased NREM sleep. It could be a candidate for the treatment of insomnia.

  • Hitherto, spatial resolution has commonly been evaluated by test patterns or phantoms built on some specific distances (from close to far) between two objects (or double targets). This evaluation method's shortcoming is that resolution is restricted to target distances of phantoms made for test. Therefore, in order to solve the problem, this study proposes and verifies a new method to efficiently test spatial resolution with a single target. For the research I used PSF and JND to propose an idea to measure spatial resolution. After that, I made experiments by commonly used phantoms to verify my new evaluation hypothesis inferred from the above method. To analyse the hypothesis, I used LabVIEW program and got a line pixel from digital image. The result was identical to my spatial-resolution hypothesis inferred from a single target. The findings of the experiment proves only a single target can be enough to relatively evaluate spatial resolution on a digital image. In other words, the limit of the traditional spatial-resolution evaluation method, based on double targets, can be overcome by my new evaluation one using a single target.
