Objectives: The purpose of this study is to review clinical studies of Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) on Genito-Pelvic Pain/Penetration Disorder (GPPPD) in women. Methods: Key words "Dyspareunia", "Vaginismus" were searched on Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure Database (CNKI) on April 21th 2019. Results: 2 case reports and 7 clinical trials were collected in accordance with the selection and exclusion criteria. Among the 7 trials, 4 were controlled trials, and 3 were single-arm trials. The types of intervention were herb medication in 8 studies, and compound TCM treatment including acupuncture, moxibustion, and cupping therapy in 1 study. All 4 controlled trials were about dyspareunia and conducted by herbal medicine of TCM. The study results and methods of intervention were analyzed. Conclusions: 2 case reports described the effectiveness of compound TCM treatments (acupuncture, moxibustion, cupping therapy) and herb medicine in dyspareunia. In 4 controlled trials, 2 trials described the effectiveness of herb medicine (oral or vaginal agent) compared to western treatment in dyspareunia, and other 2 trials described no effectiveness of herbal enema compared to danazol. In 3 single-arm trials, 1 trial of dyspareunia and 2 trials of vaginismus described the effectiveness of herb medicine. All the 9 selected studies reported improved or disappeared symptoms of GPPPD, or high effective rate after TCM treatment. There was limitation that the selected studies were retrieved from only one site of CNKI, and generalized results could not be derived, further studies should be carried out. Additional well-designed clinical studies on GPPPD in women are needed in Korea.
Purpose: To review the Scale Measurement studies on Traditional Chinese Medicine and it's prospection. Method: The papers reviewed in this study were searched through internet search engines such as China National Knowledge Infrastructure(www.cnki.net). we searched papers on Scale studies by the keyword "量表"(Scale) and "中醫"(TCM). Results: 263 papers which is truly related on "Scale" were collected. All the papers were reviewed briefly under the subtitle of diagnosis, evaluation of curative value, development of scale, reverse of overseas questionnaire to chinese literature and etc. Conclusions: Scale measurement studies on TCM proceeded so much but their medical application was on small and narrow field. Also Scale study had TCM's characteristics were only 18% of them. Neverthless, productions from China were precious and valuable to Korean Oriental Medicine and we have to learn their success on scale measurement studies.
The so-called "Needham's Grand Question" (NGQ) can be formulated as why modern science was developed in Europe despite the earlier successes of science and technology in ancient China. Numerous answers have been proposed. In this review, it will be pointed out that traditional Chinese natural philosophy (TCNP) and traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) are in fact dealing with problems of highly complex dynamical systems of Nature and human beings. Due to the lack of mathematical machinery in dealing with such complex phenomena, a holistic approach was taken by ancient Chinese instead. It was very successful for the first eighteen centuries. In the recent three centuries, however, the reductionist and mechanistic viewpoints of Western natural philosophy, sciences, and medicine have been prevalent all over the world up to now. The main obstacle in preventing the advancement of TCM, TCNP and its sciences is actually the lacking of proper mathematical tools in dealing with complex dynamical systems. Fortunately, the tools are now available and a "chaotic wave theory of fractal continuum" has been proposed recently. To give the theory an operational meaning, three basic laws of TCNP are outlined. These three laws of wave/field interactions contrast readily with those of Newton's particle collisions. Via the proposed three laws, TCM, TCNP and its sciences can be unified under the same principles. Finally, an answer to NGQ can be accurately given. It is hoped that this review will help promoting a genuine understanding of natural philosophy, sciences, and medicine in an ecumenical way.
Objectives The purpose of this study is to analyze recent clinical studies on traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) treatment for pediatric inguinal hernia and pediatric rectal prolapse in China, and to seek better methods to treat and to study for Inguinal hernia and Rectal prolapse in Korea. Methods We searched the clinical studies from the China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) that were published between January 2000 to February 2020 by key words '疝气', '直腸脫出', '直腸脫垂', '脫肛', '小腸疝', '腹股溝疝', '儿童', '小儿', '少儿', '幼年', '治療', '中医治療', '中藥', '中医藥', '顆粒', '膠囊', '自擬', '湯', '丸', '散', '方'. We analyzed the literatures in regards to the treatment methods and results. Results Among the 193 searched studies, 10 randomized controlled trials were selected and analyzed. In most of the studies, the effectiveness of the traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) treatment on inguinal hernia and rectal prolapse was significantly high. Conclusions Based on the results of the clinical studies from China, use of the TCM for the treatment of inguinal hernia and rectal prolapse has been shown to be effective in relieving symptoms. Also, based on the result of this study, it will be possible to widen the scope of the TCM treatment on inguinal hernia and rectal prolapse. Additional clinical studies and experimental studies are needed to be performed to solidify these findings. The TCM has been shown as an effective treatment for pediatrics as well. These research results can be utilized in other clinical studies and in treatment.
Objectives : The aim of this study is to explore the types of pattern identification (PI, 辨證) and the differential points of PI used for the treatment of psoriasis in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) based on the Chinese references and to provide the evidences applying PI for the treatment of psoriasis in clinical practice. Methods : This study extracted patterns of psoriasis through database CNKI (China National Knowledge Infrastructure) and analysis the patterns and classification criteria of the patterns. Those examined in the study are dermal symptoms, general symptoms, formula and herbs which are different depending on the patterns. Results : Total 60 studies were selected and 44 pattern types were extracted from them. We categorized the main pattern types on psoriasis used in TCM as 'blood-heat syndrome(BHS, 血熱證)', blood-stasis syndrome(BSS, 血瘀證), and 'blood-dryness syndrome(BDS, 血燥證)', 'dampness-heat syndrome(DHS, 濕熱證)' and 'yang-deficiency syndrome(YDS, 陽虛證)'. Among these patterns, BHS was the most common. In TCM, the pattern of BHS tended to have skin symptoms and signs related to inflammatory erythema and heat. Both BSS and BDS were characterized by long disease duration and poor healing. In addition, DHS tended to have the skin symptoms and signs such as oozing and severe itching. The symptoms and signs related to coldness mainly showed in YDS. For PI criteria, 'qi-blood-essence criteria(氣血津液辨證)' and 'eight-doctrine criteria(八鋼辨證) are commonly used. Conclusions : Our findings show that each PI on psoriasis in TCM has different characteristics related to dermal and general symptoms or signs. Further studies are needed to develop the diagnostic tool of PI on psoriasis reflecting on clinical practices in Korean Medicine by referring to the findings of this study about PI on psoriasis in TCM.
Objectives This study aims to overview traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) treatment guidelines for severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) in order to facilitate the use of Korean medicine (KM) treatment in pandemic diseases. Methods We compared the characteristics between SARS and MERS, and overviewed the Traditional Chinese Medicine treatment guidelines for SARS and MERS. We assessed the efficacy of simultaneous administration of herbal medicine and Western medicine on SARS by studying Cochranes 2012's Systematic Review Studies. Results and Conclusions Based on wen bing (warm diseases) of KM as well as TCM, KM treatment can be an alternative for pandemic diseases such as SARS and MERS considering the Korean's characteristic environment.
Objectives : This study was performed to investigate the research trends of hypertension in Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM), and it aims to promote hypertension research in Korean Medicine. Methods : We first collected more than 1,900 papers about hypertension research, and finally selected 108 papers related to this study. They were analyzed by the annul situation, the subject of the study, the perspective of TCM, the study stream, the research fields, the diagnostic patterns, and the distinguishing treatments of TCM. Results : The first review about hypertension in TCM was performed in 1963, and the number of studies has increased since 2000s. Doctors and researchers in China tried various diagnostic patterns to treat the patient because the diagnostic patterns were not unified. For this reason, most researches were reported to the diagnostic patterns and the treatments. Also we have discovered the diversity in treatments methods such as not only the typical herbal medicine, acupuncture, and Qigong but also specific treatments like Chuna, herbal acupoints stimulation, footbath, and pillow. Conclusions : Based on the results of this study, it can be proposed as follows : First, the various approach about hypertension in Korean Medicine is required. Second, the domestic research is needed to be extended to the external treatments as the distinguishing treatments of TCM.
Objectives : The purpose of this study is to investigate the correlation between pattern identification of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and western medicine, examined by a systematic research of Chinese medicine papers. Methods : We searched for the papers regarding pattern identification of TCM published from 1994 to 2012 in CNKI (China National Knowledge Infrastructure http://www.cnki.net) at April, 2012. Results : A total of 30 studies were finally included; 18 studies of them were related to stroke (cerebral infarction) and there were 12 studies regarding other diseases, such as hypertension, chronic colonitis, vascular dementia, mild cognitive impairment and etc. All 30 studies were analyzed and classified by diseases, differentiation of syndromes, numbers of subjects, the instrument of pattern identification, items of western medicine examination and statistical results. Conclusions : According to our study, there are some correlations between pattern identification of TCM and various items of western medicine examination. The result suggests a possibility of using the western medicine examination data for pattern identification of TCM.
Objectives: To compare Korean medicine (KM) and traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) psychotherapy for anxiety. Methods: Databases including MEDLINE (via PubMed), EMBASE (via Elsevier), Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, and Oriental Medicine Advanced Searching Integrated System were comprehensively searched. Prospective clinical studies on KM or TCM psychotherapy for patients with anxiety disorder or individuals with elevated anxiety levels published up to August 3, 2022 were reviewed. Psychotherapy was divided into counselling, art therapy, and meditation according to its characteristics. Results: A total of 12 clinical studies were reviewed, including nine randomized controlled trials. The most common disorder investigated was post-traumatic stress disorder. Ten studies used TCM psychotherapy and two used KM psychotherapy. As for differences between TCM psychotherapy and KM psychotherapy, TCM psychotherapy utilized pattern identification in the procedure more actively than KM psychotherapy. In addition, some TCM studies have attempted to directly converge Western psychotherapy (i.e., hypnosis) and Eastern psychotherapy (i.e., Taoin qigong therapy). In the case of KM psychotherapy, there was an attempt to incorporate psychotherapy with Sasang constitutional medicine. Reported effects of TCM psychotherapy and KM psychotherapy on anxiety were positive. Conclusions: Research status of KM psychotherapy and TCM psychotherapy for anxiety was investigated, revealing some of their characteristics, commonalities, and differences. Findings of this review have the potential to provide a clue to the development of conventional KM psychotherapy and new medical technology for KM psychotherapy.
Objectives: The objective of this study is to analyze the Clinical reports of treatment of obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). Methods: Clinical reports on obsessive compulsive disorder treatment from 2001 to 2017 were searched using the following key words in the China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI). 'OCD', 'qiangpo zheng'. Results: A total of 22 papers were selected, 12 of which were clinical research papers and 10 case report papers. The acupuncture and moxa treatment was more effective in relieving the clinical symptoms of OCD patients as compared to only using western medicine, and it was also possible to reduce the adverse effects of western medicine. Conclusions: It was established that Traditional Chinese medicine has some effect on the treatment of OCD, but there were limitations as follows. The selected papers were retrieved from only one site of CKNI and did not follow a systematic review methodology. Therefore generalized results could not be derived, further studies should therefore be carried out.
