  • The application of a sliding mode control for improving the dynamic response of an induction motor based speed control system is presented in this paper and provides attractive features, such as fast response, good transient performance, and insensitivity to variations in plant parameters and external disturbance. However, chattering is a difficult problem for which the sliding mode control is a popular solution. This paper presents a new fuzzy-sliding mode controller for a sensorless vector-controlled induction motor servo system to practically eliminate the chattering problem for traction applications. A DSP based implementation of the speed control system is employed. Experimental results are presented using a propulsion system simulator. The performance of the drive is shown to be practically free from chattering.

  • Traction motors that is one of the rotating machines for urban transit EMU have been subjected to increased demand for higher operating temperature, more demanding duty cycles, higher starting current, frequent voltage transients and severe environmental exposure. With the advent of PWM drives using power IGBTs in addition to the thermal considerations, it is important to take into account the impact of the dielectric stress upon the winding insulation system life. In analyzing the life of the stator winding, which is the heart of the motor, the majority of all winding failures are usually caused by a combination of various stresses acting on the insulation materials and system. In this paper, to evaluate the expected life of traction motor for urban transit E.M.U. it is proposed a new test method of complex accelerating degradation.

  • With the recent emphasis on the importance of energy conservation, studies on high-efficiency elevator systems are being continuously conducted. Therefore, pulse width modulation converters are commonly used in traction drives on elevator systems. Wide bandgap devices have been increasingly commercialized, and their application to power conversion systems, such as renewable and energy storage system, has been gradually increasing. In this study, a SiC inverter for an elevator traction drive is investigated. In particular, an inverter is designed to minimize stray and parasitic inductance. Input and output filters are designed by considering switching frequency. The designed SiC inverter reduces volume by approximately 32% compared with that of a Si inverter, and power converter efficiency is over 98.8%.

  • In this paper it is proposed an advanced modified sliding mode control of a rotor field oriented control of induction motor. The application of this unconventional control has very good results, such as disturbance rejection and nice dynamic properties. Stability can be guaranteed even in the worst situation. A conventional "sliding mode" controller is characterised by fast switching control signal, which causes the chattering of the drive system. To overcome this problem, a modified law is used, by introducing a hysteresis band and a continuous control, which modifies the conventional law. The control is accomplished with dual TMS320C44 floating-point digital signal processor. The validity of the proposed method was verified by experiment on the propulsion system simulator, used for the development of Korean High-Speed Railway Train(KHSRT).in(KHSRT).

  • Recently, Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor(PMSM) drives are widely used for industrial applications due to its high efficiency and high power factor control strategy. PMSM generally have two classifications such as the SPMSM(Surface Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors) and IPMSM(Inter Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors). IPMSA has economical merits over SPMSM in higher speed range, mechanical robustness, and higher power rate by the geometric difference. The maximum torque operation in IPMSM is realized by the current angle control which is to utilize additional reluctance torque due to a rotor saliency. In traction, spindle and compressor drives, constant power operation with higher speed range are desirable. This is simply achieved in the DC motor drives by the reduction of the field current as the speed is increased. However, in the PMSM, direct control of the magnet flux is not available. The airgap flux can be weakened by the appropriate current angle control to demagnetize. In this paper, the control method of optimal current vector in IPMSM is described in order to obtain the maximum torque or maximum output with the speed and load variations. The applied algorithm is realized by the proto system with torque and speed control Experimental results show this approach is satisfied for the high performance servo applications. • This paper presents a detailed realization of direct torque controlled induction motor drive for elevator applications. The drive is controlled according to the well-known space vector modulated direct control scheme (SVM-DTC). As the elevator drives are usually equipped with speed sensors, flux estimation is carried out using a current model where two stator currents are measured and accurate instantaneous rotor speed measurement is used to overcome the need for measuring stator voltages. Speed profiling for a comfortable elevator ride and other supervisory control activities to provide smooth operation are also explained. The drive performance is examined and controllers' parameters are fine-tuned using MATLAB/SIMULINK. The blocks used for flux and torque estimation and control in the offline simulation are compiled for real-time using dSPACE Microlabox. The performance of the drive has been verified experimentally. The results show good performance under transient and steady state conditions.

  • For the design of DC traction power supply system at new Light Rail Transit(LRT) construction, it is very important to determine system configuration, location and power capacity of substation. However, a LRT system consists of a number of subsystems such as train movement, power supply and traction drives, which inevitably contains many complexities and diversities. The objective of this paper is to clarify and systematize the design procedure and its assessment for the electrification system of a LRT line. This paper discusses in detail our approach to system design and its assessment. The whole DC-feeding network configuration, characteristics of a train, and design method of substation arrangements is thoroughly investigated for the design. As a result of the investigations, the design procedure is clarified and systematized and a computer program for the design and evaluation of the system is developed using the most suitable iterative method with nodal equation. To verify the proposed design and its assessment procedure, case studies for the DC traction power supply system of a planed Korean LRT line are performed.
