Robotics and automation are rapidly growing in the industries replacing human labor. The idea of robots replacing humans is positively influencing the business thereby increasing its scope of research. This paper discusses the development of an experimental platform controlled by a robotic arm through Robot Operating System (ROS). ROS is an open source platform over an existing operating system providing various types of robots with advanced capabilities from an operating system to low-level control. We aim in this work to control a 7-DOF manipulator arm (Robai Cyton Gamma 300) equipped with an external vision camera system through ROS and demonstrate the task of balancing a ball on a plate-type end effector. In order to perform feedback control of the balancing task, the ball is designed to be tracked using a camera (Sony PlayStation Eye) through a tracking algorithm written in C++ using OpenCV libraries. The joint actuators of the robot are servo motors (Dynamixel) and these motors are directly controlled through a low-level control algorithm. To simplify the control, the system is modeled such that the plate has two-axis linearized motion. The developed system along with the proposed approaches could be used for more complicated tasks requiring more number of joint control as well as for a testbed for students to learn ROS with control theories in robotics.
A phase-locked loop control system designed by using the linear quadratic regulator approach is presented in this paper. The system thus designed is optimal system when system is in locked state and the parameter value of loop filter which is an active PI filter can be obtained easily. By considering the structure of loop filter of phase-locked loop is included in the process to be controlled, a type 1 servo system can be constructed when voltage control oscillator is considered as an integrator. The integral gain of the proposed system obtained by linear quadratic regulator approach can be used as an optimal value to design the parameter of loop filter. The implemented result in controlling the second-order lag pressure process by using the proposed scheme show that the system response is fast with no overshoot and no steady-state error. Furthermore, the experimental results are also shown in term of output disturbance effect rejection, tracking and process parameter changed.
This paper presents how it is effective to use many features for improving the speed and the accuracy of the visual servo systems. Some rank conditions which relate the image Jacobian and the control performance are derived. It is also proven that the accuracy is improved by increasing the number of features. Effectiveness of the redundant features is evaluated by the smallest singular value of the image Jacobian which is closely related to the accuracy with respect to the world coordinate system. Usefulness of the redundant features is verified by the real time experiments on a Dual-Arm Robot manipulator made in Samsung Electronic Co. Ltd.

In this paper, we develope a type of humanoid robot which can express its emotion against human actions. To interact with human, the developed robot has several abilities to express its emotion, which are verbal communication with human through voice/image recognition, motion tracking, and facial expression using fourteen Servo Motors. The proposed humanoid robot system consists of a control board designed with AVR90S8535 to control servor motors, a framework equipped with fourteen server motors and two CCD cameras, a personal computer to monitor its operations. The results of this research illustrate that our intelligent emotional humanoid robot is very intuitive and friendly so human can interact with the robot very easily.
An industrial robot needs a simple and robust control algorithm obtaining high precision control performance in spite of disturbance and parameter's change. In this paper, for solving this problem, a new sliding mode control algorithm is proposed and applied to the trajectory control of a SCARA type robot. The proposed algorithm has diminished the chattering occurring in sliding mode by setting a dead band along the switching line on the phase plane. It shows that we can easily obtain a simple switching control input satisfying sliding mode in spite of regarding nonlinear terms of a manipulator and servo system as disturbance. A guideline for selection of dead-band width is determined by optimal value of cost function presenting magnitudes of chattering and error. By this algorithm, we can expect the high performance of the trajectory tracking of an industrial robot which needs a robust and simple algorithm.

Recent trends and the effect of mechanical vibrations in optical disk drives are reviewed in this paper. The Nation from CD drives to high density DVD drives and the development of writable optical disk drives require tighter mechanical tolerance. The demand for faster access time and higher data transfer rate also leads to critical mechanical problems to limit the tracking and focusing servo performance. The current mechanical issues to limit the performance of the drives and various technologies to overcome the mechanical problems are introduced. Vibrations of disk-spindle system, actuator and suspension designs of the optical pick-up, and general mechanical designs for the fast and stable access mechanism are considered.

This work focuses on the analysis of dynamic characteristics of an optical disk drive, Dynamic performance of the drive plays an important role in the design of a mechanism where the quality of servo mainly affected by the quality of controlling focus error and tracking error, A finite element model of the optical disk drive is presented to demonstrate its dynamic behaviors. Experimental results for the drive are presented and compared to predictions from the finite element model for verification. Using the finite element model, dynamic responses are predicted under internal and external excitations. Some design parameters of the vibration isolators are presented, satisfying the requirements of DVD drive system.
The road simulators have become common tools within the automotive industry for evaluation of vehicle and vehicle system durability performance. These simulators need appropriate input signal generation algorithms to realize the actual driving conditions due to non-linear vehicle and test rig behaviour. Although somewhat unconventional from a control standpoint, the iteration approach has proven to be a very effective method for control of complex, multiple degree-of-freedom systems where the tracking parameter is known a priori. In this paper, the road profile replication algorithm is verified by applying Belgian road to the developed road simulator. The simulation and experimental results are included to evaluate the performance of this simulator. This road simulator provides considerable savings in cost, development time, and testing risk during developing automotive components.
