On most construction sites, the arrangement of tower cranes is decided by site engineers based on their own experience, which can cause cost overruns and delays in the lifting work. Although many researchers have conducted studies on tower crane arrangement using computer modeling and knowledge-based expert systems as well as mathematical models, no research has aimed to develop an algorithm to identify an optimum solution among several alternatives for installation areas of tower cranes satisfying the conditions of lifting work. The objective of this study is to develop an automatic arrangement algorithm for tower cranes used in high-rise apartment construction. First, as a new concept, a possible installation area of tower cranes was suggested. Second, after proposing several alternatives based on the installation points suggested in this study, an algorithm analyzing the economic feasibility of tower cranes was developed considering the rental, installation and removal costs. Third, a case study was conducted to prove the validity of the developed algorithm for selecting and installing an effective set of tower cranes at minimum cost.

This study aims to provide an optimal model for the layout of multiple tower cranes and material stockyards which have multiple candidate positions. In a high-rise building construction, the positional allocation of tower cranes and material stockyard has an effect on the travel time of material hauling. In addition, in case of using multiple tower cranes, specific location of a tower crane allocated to each material determines the efficiency of the works. Current optimal model limited to the optimization of position of single tower crane and material stockyards. This study suggests optimal model both for the positions of multiple tower cranes and material stockyards. Layout of multiple tower cranes requires additional allocation of each crane to each material hauling and control on the minimum distance between tower cranes. This optimization model utilizes genetic algorithm to deal with complex interaction on the candidate positions of multiple tower cranes, material stockyards, and types of materials. In order to identify its utility, case study was performed.

Input shaping has been a very effective control method for reducing payload swing in industrial bridge and gantry cranes. However, conventional input shapers often degrade performance when applied to tower cranes because of the nonlinear coupled dynamics between rotational and radial motions in tower cranes. To alleviate this problem, a new input shaper for tower cranes is developed by means of dynamic modeling, analysis and optimization. This work investigates the tower crane dynamics along with parameters of the tower crane varied. A performance index for input shaper design is proposed so as to reduce the coupled residual vibration of a tower crane using only rotational motion of tower crane. The proposed new input shaper is verified to be effective through simulations and experiments.

As recent construction projects are bigger and higher, the importance of lifting is increasing. In construction sites tower cranes are an essential lifting equipment covering were than 50% of all construction activities. But due to neglect of safety supervision, tower crane-related accidents are frequently taking place. Since most of construction activities is done in heights, the accidents are more likely to be catastrophic. According to an analysis of the causes of tower crane-related accidents, 49% of all accidents claimed for certain periods($1999{\sim}2003$) occurred in the process of telescoping work. Therefore, this research is conducted with the object of analyzing telescoping work of tower cranes and presenting solutions against safety risk. It is expected that the results of this study can be used as useful basic data or material when preparing for effective safety management for tower cranes.

Recently, the scale of construction work has been growing, and buildings are becoming higher. To enable greater efficiency of construction work, the use of vertical transportation equipment has been radically increasing. In this context, many studies have been conducted on tower cranes. While these studies have discussed issues such as the selection of tower cranes, the optimization of locations, and the hoisting time of tower cranes, there has been no research on the installation of tower cranes. As such, the installation of tower cranes on construction sites has been accomplished based on subjective judgment and technical assistance, and the experience of workers in equipment companies. Therefore, this study analyzes the productivity of tower cranes using simulation methodology, and proposes a generalized model of the installation process of tower cranes in order to offer a basic resource that site managers can directly utilize.

Recently the demand of constructing high-rised building grows larger. So it becomes more important to make an exact plan of a tower cranes which has an important position in high-rised building construction. Nevertheless businessmen of construction sites only depend on a great store of experience without a clear process of locating tower cranes. The object of this study is to set up the process model for locating tower cranes. The study went off through a study of related documents, an interview with some experts and a visiting of job sites. In result the study suggests a process model which has four steps of considering an establishing, disjointing, a radius of working, easy working. Case study was examined to estimate the feasibility and applicability of the proposed model. As a result, the model is proven to be a method to locate tower cranes quickly and cleary, and to operate properly as a decision-making tool.

As recent construction projects aim to build higher and bigger buildings, lifting operation is getting increasingly important in construction sites. Accordingly, as tower cranes get higher and higher, disasters involving tower cranes are also on the rise. According to occupational incident statistics of the Korea Occupational Health & Safety Agency (KOHSA), most of such incidents occur in installation, dismantling and climbing phases of tower crane. Therefore, it is essential to develop preventative measures to secure safety of tower crane operations, with critical focus on installation, dismantling and climbing of tower crane. Hence, this research attempts to measure criticality of key risk factors in installation, dismantling and climbing phases of tower crane on construction site and propose necessary safety measures. As a result, conclusions herein will contribute to minimize disasters and incidents involving tower cranes in high-rise building construction sites.

As buildings nowadays become taller in height and larger in size the safety review of lifting plan takes larger portion in construction project management. However, the cost and safety in lifting plan have a contradictory effect on each other. Therefore, an optimization algorithm needs devising as a solution of the contradictory problem. In many cases at construction sites, selections and stability review of tower cranes are assigned to equipment suppliers or field managers, which cause the problems in safety and cost of the projects. To improve the part of the current situation, a study on the optimization algorithm for designing the foundation of tower cranes is conducted in this study, which can be utilized by equipment suppliers or field managers to check the stability of tower cranes easily and promptly without substantial knowledge.

Poor expertise in equipment operation and installation, coupled with unpredictable natural disaster, usually directly leads to disastrous accidents of large lifting equipment such as tower cranes. For example, 52 tower cranes fell down due to the unstable support in Korea at the attack of Typhoon "Maemi" in 2003, which damaged property and caused loss of life. In high-rise construction projects, top-slewing or luffing-jib tower cranes needs checking the stability of lateral-support in addition to the bottom support such as the foundation. In this study, the optimization algorithm for lateral-support of tower cranes is conducted, which is expected to enhance the structural stability of tower cranes and save the cost in conflict with the safety.

Tower cranes have an unstable superstructure, which means that there is a very high risk of accidents. It is necessary to establish preventive measures to ensure the safety of tower cranes at a time when active efforts are being made to reduce safety accidents involving tower cranes. As such, the purpose of this study is to analyze disaster cases to ensure the safety of tower cranes. For this study, 260 cases of tower crane disasters filed with the Korea Occupational Safety and Health Agency from July 2012 to July 2020 were analyzed. Through this analysis, it was found that lifting work was the most common of the work types, at 45.3%; while of the types of disasters, accidents caused by falls were the most common type, at 35.8%. In addition, with regard to the cause of accidents, work method defects was found to be the highest, at 38.8%. In the future, the findings of this study will be used as basic data to guide the establishment of policy to prevent tower crane accidents.
