This experiment was conducted to know the relationship between root diameter and the contents of paeoniflorin and some Chemical components in Paeoniae radix. Paeoniae radix of Euisung cultivar was harvested on 17 June, 1993 and divided into four gorups according to root diameter such as $30{\pm}2mm,\;17{\pm}1mm,\;12{\pm}1mm\;and\;7{\pm}1mm$. Paeoniflorin, total sugars, starch, crude protein, crude fat and crude ash of them were analyzed after dryed them for 30 days in room temperature. The ratio of shrinkage with different root diameter were not different significantly, and the average ratio of them was about 30%. Contents of paeoniflorin of $17{\pm}1mm$ root diameter was lower than that of $7{\pm}1mm$. but contents of total sugar and starch of $17{\pm}1mm$ were higher than those of $7{\pm}1mm$. Paeoniflorin contents was positively correlated with crude protein and crude fiber, and crude protein contents was negatively correlated with total sugars and starch.

B-mode ultrasound is being used to assess carotid atherosclerosis in epidemiological studies and clinical trials. Recently the interpretation of measurements made from ultrasound images has been questioned. This study examines the anatomical correlates of B-mode ultrasound of carotid arteries in vitro and in situ in cadavers. Twenty-seven segments of human carotid artery were collected at autopsy. pressure perfusion fixed in buffered 2.5% gluteraldehyde and 4% paraformaldehyde and imaged using an ATL UM-8 (10 MHz single crystal mechanical probe). Each artery was then frozen, sectioned and stained with van Gieson or elastin van Gieson. The thickness of the intima. media and adventitia were measured 'to an accuracy of 0.01 mm from histological sections using a calibrated eye graticule on a light microscope. Shrinkage artifact induced by histological preparation was determined to be 7.8%. Digitised ultra sound images of the artery wall were analysed off-line. The distance from the leading edge of the first interface ($LE_{1}$) to the leading edge of the second interface ($LE_2$) was measured using a dedicated programme. $LE_{1}$-$LE_{2}$ measurements were correlated against histological measurements corrected for shrinkage. Mean values for the far wall were: ultra sound $LE_{1}$-$LE_{2}$ (0.97 mm, S.D. 0.26), total wall thickness (1.05 mm, S.D. 0.37), adventitia (0.35 mm, S.D. 0.16), media (0.61 mm, S.D. 0.18). intima (0.09 mm, S.D. 0.13). Ultrasound measurements corresponded best with total wall thickness, rather than elastin or the intima-media complex. Excision of part of the intima plus media or removal of the adventitia resulted in a corresponding decrease in the $LE_{1}$-$LE_{2}$ distance of the B-mode image. Furthermore. increased wall thickness due to intimal atherosclerotic thickening correlated well with $LE_{1}$-$LE_{2}$ distance of the B-mode images. B-mode images obtained from the carotid arteries in situ in four cadavers also corresponded best with total wall thickness measured from histological sections and not with the thickness of the intima plus media. In conclusion, the $LE_{1}$-$LE_{2}$ distance measured on B-mode images of the carotid artery best represents total wall thickness of intima plus media plus adventitia and not intima plus media alone.
Objectives: This study assessed the effect of water storage on the flexural strength (FS) of low shrinkage composites. Materials and Methods: A total of 165 bar-shaped specimens ($2{\times}2{\times}25mm$) were fabricated of 2 low shrinkage composites (Filtek P90 [3M ESPE], GC Kalore [GC International]) and a conventional methacrylate-based composite (Filtek Z250 [3M ESPE]). The specimens were subjected to 3-point bending test at 6 time intervals, namely: immediately after curing, at 24 hours, 1 week, 1 month, 6 months, and 1 year following storage in wet and dry conditions. The FS of the specimens were measured by applying compressive load at a crosshead speed of 1.0 mm/min. Data was analyzed using 3-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey's test. Results: Three-way ANOVA revealed significant interactions between time, type of composite, and storage condition (p = 0.001). Tukey's multiple comparison test revealed significant reductions in FS of all composites after 6 months and 1 year of storage in distilled water compared to dry condition. Conclusions: Filtek P90 showed the highest and GC Kalore showed the lowest FS after 1 year storage in distilled water. The immediate high strength of Filtek Z250 significantly decreased at 1 year and its final value was lower than that of Filtek P90.
This study was carried out to evaluate the mechano-sorptive deflection of shear creep of drift pin jointed solid wood. Specimens were the solid wood of Pinus densiflora. The joint was composed with steel plate and drift pin, 85mm in length and 10mm in diameter. The creep tests were conducted under the constant loads in an variable environment. Five different shearing loads were applied parallel to the grain of specimens. The shearing loads applied were 170, 340, 510, 680 and 850 kgf. The stress levels were 10, 20, and 30, 40 and 50% of the bearing strength obtained from the tension-type lateral strength test. The creep tests for specimens were carried out for 10300 hours. A few general conclusions could be drawn from this study: The mechano-sorptive deflection (${\delta}$ ms) is defined as ${\delta}\;ms={\delta}\;t-({\delta}\;c+{\delta}\;sh)-{\delta}\;o$, where ${\delta}$ t is the total deflection, ${\delta}$ c is the pure creep, ${\delta}$ sh is shrinkage-swelling behavior, and ${\delta}$ o is the initial deflection. Changes of relative humidity may cause more severe creep deflection than those of constant humidity, especially during the drying process. The mechano-sorptive behaviors of specimens, except the effects of shrinkage and swelling, gradually increased with increasing time. The deflection is increased in desorption process and recovered in adsorption process. The deflections of drift pin jointed solid wood under different loads showed almost same tendency in all specimens. Although the creep deflection tendencies of each series are very similar, the specimens subjected to a large shearing load exhibit large creep deflections in the desorption process than do those to the small shearing load specimens.
PURPOSE. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of dimensional stability of splinting material on the accuracy of master casts. MATERIALS AND METHODS. A stainless steel metal model with 6 implants embedded was used as a master model. Implant level impressions were made after square impression copings were splinted using 5 different techniques as follows. (1) Splinted with autopolymerizing resin and sectioned, reconnected to compensate polymerization shrinkage before the impression procedure. (2) Splinted with autopolymerizing resin just before impression procedure. (3) Primary impression made with impression plaster and secondary impression were made over with polyether impression material. (4) Splinted with impression plaster. (5) Splinted with VPS bite registration material. From master model, 5 impressions and 5 experimental casts, total 25 casts were made for each of 5 splinting methods. The distortion values of each splinting methods were measured using coordinate measuring machine, capable of recordings in the x-, y-, z- axes. A one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) at a confidence level of 95% was used to evaluate the data and Tukey's studentized range test was used to determine significant differences between the groups. RESULTS. Group 1 showed best accuracy followed by Group 3 & 4. Group 2 and 5 showed relatively larger distortion value than other groups. No significant difference was found between group 3, 4, 5 in x-axis, group 2, 3, 4 in y-axis and group 1, 3, 4, 5 in z-axis (P<.0001). CONCLUSION. Both Splinting impression copings with autopolymerizing resin following compensation of polymerization shrinkage and splinting method with impression plaster can enhance the accuracy of master cast and impression plaster can be used simple and effective splinting material for implant impression procedure.

In this study, the effects of curing procedures on the mechanical properties of recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) were investigated. The replacement ratios by recycled coarse aggregate were 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100% by mass of natural coarse aggregate. Steam curing was adopted to all recycled aggregate concrete mixtures. Compressive and split tensile strength, water porosity, chloride ions penetration resistance and drying shrinkage measurements were carried out to determine performance of the RACs. From the test results, it was found that the mechanical performance of RAC decreased as the recycled aggregate contents increased. Furthermore, steam curing reduced the compressive and split tensile strength, water porosity and total charge of RAC, especially at the early ages. However, at the later ages, the beneficial effect of steam curing was less prominent. This study clearly showed that initial steam curing could be one of practical methods to improve performance of RAC with higher replacement ratio of recycled aggregate.
Objective: The influence of konjac gel level on fermentation process and product qualities were assessed to evaluate the feasibility of using it as fat analog in Northeastern Thai fermented sausage (Sai Krok E-san). Methods: Five treatments of fermented sausages were formulated by replacing pork backfat with 0%, 7.5%, 22.5%, and 30% konjac gel. The changes in lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and important physicochemical properties of samples were assessed during 3 days of fermentation. After the end of fermentation at day 3, water activity ($a_w$), instrumental texture, color, microbial counts, and sensory evaluation were compared. The best product formulation using konjac for replacing pork back fat were selected and used to compare proximate composition and energy value with control sample (30% pork backfat). Results: An increase in konjac gel resulted in higher values of LAB, total acidity, and proteolysis index with lower pH and lipid oxidation during 3 days of product fermentation (p<0.05). It was noted that larger weight loss and product shrinkage during fermentation was observed with higher levels of konjac gel (p<0.05). The resulting sausage at day 3 with 15% to 30% konjac gel exhibited higher hardness, cohesiveness, gumminess, springiness, and chewiness than control (p<0.05). The external color of samples with 22.5% to 30% konjac gel were redder than others (p<0.05). Mold, Salmonella spp., Staphylococcus aureus, and Escherichia coli in all finished products were lower than detectable levels. Product with 15% konjac gel had the highest scores of sourness linking and overall acceptability (p<0.05). Conclusion: The product with 15% of konjac gel was the optimum formulation for replacing pork backfat. It had higher sensorial scores of sourness and overall acceptability than control with less negative impact on external appearance (product shrinkage) and weight loss. Moreover, it provided 46% fat reduction and 32% energy reduction than control.

This study evaluates the magnitudes and distributions of contact tangential forces with the swaging depth of punch acting at the contact surfaces between a rotor core slot and a Cu bar during a sequential rotor core swaging process. The effects of the core slot shape on the magnitudes and distributions of the total contact forces were investigated to improve the productivity of the rotor core swaging process. Parametric elastic-plastic numerical analyses were performed using simplified two-dimensional cyclic symmetric plane strain models to evaluate the contact force distributions at the contact surfaces. The numerical analysis results show that the total contact tangential forces increased by about 55% with the adjacent Cu bar swaging process. The length of the core slot is a dominant factor in the core slot design as result of the increased total contact tangential forces during the swaging process of the rotor core.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the polymerization contraction of composite resin(Tetric $ceram^{(R)}$, Ivoclar Vivadent Liechtenstein) according to various liners(Tetric $flow^{(R)}$, Ivoclar Vivadent, Liechtenstein/$Ionosit^{(R)}$, DMG, German/ $Vitrebond,^{TM}$ 3M-ESPE, USA). The strain gauge method was used for measurement of polymerization shrinkage strain. Specimens were divided by 8 groups according to curing units and liners. Group A, E: Tetric $ceram^{(R)}$ bulk filing, Group B, F: Tetric $flow^{(R)}$ lining, Tetric $ceram^{(R)}$ filling, Group C, G: $Ionosit^{(R)}$ lining, Tetric $ceram^{(R)}$ filling, Group D, H: $Vitrebond^{TM}$ lining, Tetric $ceram^{(R)}$ filling. Group A, B, C and D were cured using the conventional halogen light($XL3000^{TM}$ 3M ESPE, USA) for 40 seconds at $400mW/cm^2$. Group E, F G and H were cured using light emitted diode(LED) light(Elipar Freelight $2^{TM}$, 3M-ESPE, USA) for 15 seconds at 800 $mW/cm^2$. Strain gauge attached to each sample was connected to a strainmeter. Measurements were recorded at each second for the total of 750 seconds including the periods of light application. Obtained data were analyzed statistically using Repeated measures ANOVA and Tukey test. The results of this were as follows : 1. Contraction stresses in flowable resin and glass ionomer lining group were lower than that in compomer lining group(p<0.05). 2, Contraction stresses in LED curing light groups were higher than that in halogen curing light groups, but there was no significant difference (p>0.05).

Many researches have been performed on hybrid fiber reinforced concrete for years, which is to improve some of the weak material properties of concrete. Researches on characteristics of hybrid fiber reinforced concrete using amorphous steel fiber and organic fiber, however, yet remain to be done. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to estimate the compressive strength, long term drying shrinkage, and resistance to freezing and thawing of hybrid fiber reinforced concrete(HFRC) using amorphous steel fiber and polyamide fiber as one of organic fibers. For this purpose, HFRCs containing amorphous steel fiber and polyamide fiber were made according to their total volume fraction of 1.0% for target compressive strength of 40 and 60 MPa, respectively, and then the compressive strength, length change, and resistance to freezing and thawing of these were evaluated. As a result, the long term length change ratio of HFRC used in this study decreased by more than 30%, 25% than plain concrete at 365 and 730 days, respectively, and the durability factor of HFRC was very excellent as more than 90%.
