  • This study was conducted from 2003 to 2005 at crop field of National Institute of Subtropical Agriculture, RDA, in Jeju. The treatment consisted of chemical fertilizer 100%(CF 100%, T1), cattle manure 100%(CM 100%, T2), CF 50%+CM 50%(T3), CF 25%+CM 75%(T4), CM 100%(1st yr.)+CF 100%(2nd yr,)+CM(3rd yr)(T5), CM 100%(1st yr.)+CF 100%(2nd yr.)+CF(3rd yr.)(T6). The highest substitution effect of chemical fertilizer for cattle manure indicated that the highest yield(Avg. 11,169 kg/ha) obtained from CM 100%(1 yr.)+CF 100%(2 yr.) treatment. The forage yield of CM 100%(1 yr.)+CF 100%(2 yr.) was 4% more than CM 100% application whereas was 3% less than CF 100% application. Changes of physical and chemical properties of soils for applications of CF 100% and CM 100% was clearly in cattle manure application. Especially, cattle manure application in pasture were superior to chemical fertilizer application with respect to organic matter(OM, %), total nitrogen(T-N, %), and avaliable phosphorous($P_2O_5$, %) contents of soils. In this present study, cattle manure application recorded slightly lower forage yields than CF 100% application but the combined use of cattle manure and chemical fertilizer was attribute to reduction of chemical fertilizer application rate as well as maintaining soil health on long-term basis.

  • As diverse physiological functions of taurine have been reported, taurine-containing health drinks and products are marketed worldwide for the treatment of various conditions such as improvements of liver, heart and circulatory functions or as an aid to athletic performance. Although animal studies have shown that taurine is fairly safe when supplemented in the diet for an extended period, the effective dose range of taurine for dietary supplements is in controversy. Reports on dietary taurine intakes have been sparse, and would serve as a guideline for determining an appropriate taurine dosage. The present study was aimed to estimate dietary intake level of taurine using the taurine content database of commonly used food stuffs established recently in our laboratory, and also to evaluate plasma concentration and urinary excretion of taurine in adolescents and adults residing in Seoul area. Dietary taurine intakes of the subjects were 219$\pm$16.9mg/day for 16-19 years old(n=123), 177$\pm$18.1mg/day for adults older than 20 years old(n=123). Male subjects(n=115) consumed 216$\pm$21.1mg of taurine/day, while female subjects(n=131) consumed 181$\pm$14.3mg of taurine/day(p<0.05). The level of dietary taurine intake was positively correlated with the levels of dietary intakes of energy, carbohydrate, total lipids, cholesterol, vitamin A, vitamin B$_1$, niacin, vitamin C, calcium, phosphorous, sodium and potassium at p<0.01, and with dietary intakes of iron and animal lipids at p<0.05, respectively. Plasma taurine concentration of subjects were 135$\pm$5.9$\mu$mol/L, which is considered to be within a normal range for healthy subjects. The subjects excreted 1158$\pm$72.7nmol/ of tarine mg creatinine in their urine, which is approximated as 150-170mg of taurine/24hr urine based on the assumption that 18mg creatinine/kg/day is excreted in the urine of healthy adults, and this would be about 80% of the daily taurine intake observed in the same subjects. Dietary taurine intake level was positively correlated with plasma taurine concentration, as well as with urinary taurine excretion corrected by creatinine excretion at p<0.05. The present study was the first report of taurine intake, and plasma concentration and urinary excretion of taurine in a Korean population so far, and these results would serve as an index for the future study evaluating taurine status in a diverse population within and outside Korea. • The physical and chemical characteristics were examined in the southern sea of Korea including the Cheju Strait, and the entrance of the Korea Strait in the period of May 30 to June 8, 1995. The results are as follows. Firstly, the variation ranges of the temperature and salinity at the Cheju Stratit during 24 hours observation were larger in the surface layer than that in the deep layers. Secondly, daily variations of nutrients show that total inorganic nitrogen, phosphate phosphorous, and silicate silicon concentration are higher at night than at day. Thirdly, water temperature and salinity distributions show highest values at the entrance of Korea Strait, which is thought to be influenced directly by Tsushima Warm Current, while they show the lowest values in Cheju Strait. This means that the surface waters in Korea Strait are greatly influenced from the entrance of Korea Strait and bottom waters is greatly influenced from Cheju Strait. Fourthly, nutrients distribution shows highest values in Korea Strait but dissolved oxygen shows lowest values in the area. These seem to be caused by the oxygen consumption used in the inorganization of nutrients to decompose organisms and the liquidation of nutrients.

  • The amounts of carbon (C), nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) in relation to dry weight (D.W.) were measured in zooplankton from the large four rivers (Han R., Geum R., Yeongsan R. and Seomjin R.) during 2004~2008. The stoichiometry of total zooplankton in four river systems was highly variable. The ranges of average C, N and P-contents were $70{\sim}620mgC\;mg^{-1}$ D.W., $7.1{\sim}85.5{\mu}gN\;mg^{-1}$ D.W. and $2.5{\sim}7.4{\mu}gP\;mg^{-1}$ D.W., respectively. The mean C :N: P atomic ratios reflected large spatial differences. The C : P and N : P ratios of the zooplankton community ranged from 38 to 392 : 1 and from 4 to 65 : 1 in all sampling sites. Self-Organizing Map (SOM) was applied to the survey data, and the study sites were clearly classified into 3 clusters. Clustering was largely affected by the distribution pattern of C, N, P-contents, which is related with characteristics of river systems on the basis of stoichiometry.

  • The purpose of this study was to measure the changes in soil properties and forest vegetation after surface fire, which had occured on June 5, 1983 in Mt. Gwanag, Kyunggi-do. Moisture content, organic matter and acidity of soil increased just after the fire and then dropped down up to those of unfired areas as time goes. Also total nitrogen, available phosphorous exchangeable base had the similar trend to moisture, organic matter and acidity. Most of the exchangeable bases in surface soil except for sodium were higher than those in sub-soil. No changes in soil texture by the fire were found. Increasers, decreasers, invaders and neutral species could be classified according to the relative importance value of each species. Species diversity was reduced just after the fire and increased gradually afterward. Diversity in the southeast slope was higher than that in the southwest slope. Due to the fire, evenness of woody plants decreased continuously while that of herbs increased. Species similarity was shown greater at fired areas than at unfired areas.

  • Leather processing sludge were amended in sandy loam soil successively to investigate effects on soil properties and radish crop. Total nitrogen concentration of the sludge was $60\;g\;kg^{-1}$, and chromium was $9,048\;mg\;kg^{-1}$. Sludges were treated twice each year for 4 year, and the soils were mixed with sludge to give mixtures equivalent to sludge application rates of 12.5, 25 and $50\;Mg\;ha^{-1}\;yr^{-1}$ in dry matter. Chemical fertilizers $(N-P-K\;:\;280-59-154\;kg\;ha^{-1})$ used as a control. All treated soils were croped to altari and kimjang radish in spring and fall respectively. Organic matter and Cr content in soils were increased with input rate and years of successive application of leather processing sludge, while phosphorous and potassium contents were decreased. Yields of the first harvested altari grown in sludge treated pots were less than control. In the other hand, yields of the first kimjang radish were more than control in proportion with sludge input rates until third year fall. But in fourth year, all sludge treated pot was much less than control in radish yield. Chromium contents of radish in treated soil increased and Cr contents in leaves of radish were higher than roots. Leather processing sludge was considered a potential hazardous resource to soil and crops when it use continuously, because it has high Cr concentration.

  • This study aimed to investigate an effective method of purifying oil from hydrolysates of mackerel by-products. A hydrolyzed sample was separated into lipids and other material. After degumming of crude lipids with 6% citric acid solution, the phosphorous content (45 mg/kg) decreased to 5.8 mg/kg, and the acid value (18.03 mg /g) decreased to 1.19 mg KOH/g. Following the addition of 8% sodium hydroxide solution, the peroxide value (30.25 meq/kg) dropped to 3.18 meq/kg, and the chromaticity decreased from 0.488 nm to 0.057 nm. Bleaching was performed by adding 5% activated charcoal for 60℃ for 20 min under vacuum conditions. After bleaching, the acid value was 0.17 mg KOH/g, and the peroxide value was 1.21 meq/kg, but the chromaticity was not changed remarkably (0.062 nm). Crystallization was conducted to increase the amount of unsaturated fatty acids. After crystallization, the total amount of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) was 228.83 mg/g. The results suggest that the product can be used as an omega-3 fatty acid resource for functional food.

  • This study was performed to evaluate the feasibility of anaerobic pretreatment for the leachate solubilized from thermal hydrolysis of sewage sludge cake. Overall process for the treatment of sludge cake consists of thermal hydrolysis, crystallization of magnesium, ammonium, and phosphate (MAP) for the leachate and anaerobic digestion of supernatant from MAP crystallization. The experimental evidence showed that the optimum ratio of Mg : P for the struvite crystallization of leachate solubilized from thermal hydrolysis of sludge cake was 1.5 to 1.0 as weight basis at the pH of 9.5. With this operational condition, the removal efficiencies of ammonia nitrogen and phosphorous achieved 50% and 97%, respectively. The mesophilic batch test showed that the ultimate biodegradability of the supernatant from MAP crystallization reached 63% at S/I ratio of 0.5. The readily biodegradable fraction of 90% ($S_1$) of the MAP supernatant BVS (Biodegradable Volatile Solids, $S_0$) degraded with $k_1$ of $0.207day^{-1}$ for the initial 17 days where as the rest slowly biodegradable fraction ($S_2$) of 10% of BVS degraded with $k_2$ of $0.02day^{-1}$ for the rest of the operational period. Semi-Continuously Fed and Mixed Reactor (SCFMR) was chosen as one of the best candidates to treat the MAP supernatant because of its total solids content over 6%. Maximum average biogas production rates reached 0.45 v/v-d and TVS removal efficiency of 37~41% was achieved at an hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 20 days and its corresponding organic loading rate (OLR) of 1.43 g VS/L-d.
