This study considers the problem of scheduling jobs on uniform parallel machines with a common due date. The objective is to minimize the total absolute deviation of job completion times about the common due date. This problem is motivated by the fact that a certain phase of printed circuit board manufacturing is bottleneck and the processing speeds of parallel machines in this phase are uniformly different for all jobs. Optimal properties are proved and a simple polynomial time optimal algorithm is developed.
In this paper, a hybrid genetic algorithm (HGA) approach is proposed for an n-job, m-machine flow shop scheduling problem with limited capacity buffers with blocking in which the objective is to minimize the total stretch. The stretch of a job is the ratio of the amount of time the job spent before its completion to its processing time. HGA adopts the idea of seed selection and development in order to improve the exploitation and exploration power of genetic algorithms (GAs). Extensive computational experiments have been conducted to compare the performance of HGA with that of GA.
Lot-streaming is the process of splitting a job (lot) into sublots to allow the overlapping of operations between successive machines in a multi-stage production system. A new genetic algorithm (NGA) is proposed for an n-job, m-machine, lot-streaming flow shop scheduling problem with equal-size sublots in which the objective is to minimize the total stretch. The stretch of a job is the ratio of the amount of time the job spent before its completion to its processing time. NGA replaces the selection and mating operators of genetic algorithms (GAs) by marriage and pregnancy operators and incorporates the idea of inter-chromosomal dominance and individuals' similarities. Extensive computational experiments for medium to large-scale lot-streaming flow-shop scheduling problems have been conducted to compare the performance of NGA with that of GA.
This paper considers a scheduling problem to minimize the total tardiness in the two-stage assembly-type flowshop. The system is composed of multiple fabrication machines in the first stage and a final-assembly machine in the second stage. Each job consists of multiple tasks, each task is performed on the fabrication machine specified in advance. After all the tasks of a job are finished, the assembly task can be started on the final-assembly machine. The completion time of a job is the time that the assembly task for the job is completed. The objective of this paper is to find the optimal schedule minimizing the total tardiness of a group of jobs. In the problem analysis, we first derive three solution properties to determine the sequence between two consecutive jobs. Moreover, two lower objective bounds are derived and tested along with the derived properties within a branch-and-bound scheme. Two efficient heuristic algorithms are also developed. The overall performances of the proposed properties, branch-and-bound and heuristic algorithms are evaluated through numerical experiments.
This paper addresses the problem of placing tools in a tool magazine with random-select capability on a flexible machine. The tool placement problem could be a significant portion of the total processing time. It is assumed that the total number of tools required to process a set of parts exceeds the available magazine capacity, and so tool switches may occur between two adjacent parts in a given part sequence. Two heuristics are presented so as to minimize the total travel distance of the tool magazine before the completion of all parts.
This paper discusses a brcriterion approachto sequencing with time/cost trade-offs. The first problem is to minimize the total flow time and the maximum tardiness. And second is to the maximum tardiness and resource allocation costs. This approach , which produces an efficient frontier of possible schedules, has the advantage that it does not require the sequencing criteria to be measurable in the same units as the resource allocation cost. The basic single machine model is used to treat a class of problems in which the sequencing objective is to minimize the maximum completion penalty. It is further assumed that resource allocation costs can be represented by linear time/cost function.
There is a worldwide trend to automate the handling operations in port container terminals in an effort to improve productivity and reduce labor cost. This study iscusses how to apply an AGV(automated guided vehicle) system to the handling of containers in the yard of a port container ter-minal. The main issue of this paper is how to assign tasks of container delivery to AGVs during ship operations in an automated port container terminal. A dual-cycle operation is assumed in which the loading and the discharging operation can be performed alternately. Mixed integer linear program-ming formulations are suggested for the dispatching problem. The completion time of all the dis-charging and loading operations by a quayside crane is minimized, and the minimization of the total travel time of AGVs is also considered as a secondary objective. A heuristic method using useful properties of the dispatching problem is suggested to reduce the computational time. The perfor-mance of the heuristic algorithm is evaluated in light of solution quality and computation time.

The objective of this study was to examine the significance of feeding induced hypovolemia (decrease in plasma volume) in controlling the feed intake of goats fed on dry feed. In order to alleviate hypovolemia with feeding, a 2 h intravenous infusion (16-18 ml/min) of artificial saliva or mannitol solution was begun 1 h prior to feeding and continued until 1h after the start of the 2 h feeding period. In comparison with no infusion (NI), cumulative feed intake was increased by 41% with artificial saliva infusion (ASI) and by 45% with mannitol infusion (MI) by the completion of the 2 h feeding period. Both infusion treatments (ASI and MI) were significantly different (p<0.05) from the NI treatment in terms of the cumulative feed intake. The cumulative feed intake between the ASI and MI treatments was not significantly different (p>0.05). No infusion treatment (NI) had the lowest cumulative feed intake (929 g DM), whereas MI had the highest (1345 g DM), after completion of the 2 h feeding period. Generally, infusion treatments also increased the rate of eating at all time points after feeding was commenced. Following the first 30 mins of feeding, the rate of eating decreased sharply, and subsequently declined gradually in all treatments. Compared to the NI, both ASI and MI significantly (p<0.05) decreased thirst level (water intake for 30 mins after the completion of the 2 h feeding period) by approximately 13%. However, the thirst level caused by ASI and MI was not significantly different (p>0.05). Both ASI and MI decreased the plasma concentrations of osmolality and total protein, and hematocrit at 1 h after infusion. The results suggested that the thirst sensation in the brain could be produced by feeding induced hypovolemia. Moreover, the results indicate that hypovolemia is one of the factors controlling the feed intake of goats fed on dry feed.
In this paper a new heuristic algorithm has been developed and presented for minimizing the total completion time of a scheduling problem in a multi stage automated machining and assembly systems. The proposed Higher Ratio First(HRF) algorithm is based on the idea that jobs with higher processing time ratio should be a higher priority. The heuristic algorithm is implemented on the various problem cases by number of jobs and machines. The proposed algorithm provided smaller makespan than the makespan applied by three previously documented heuristics. The results obtained show a superior solution by the new heuristic over previous heuristics on all problem sizes.
