In order to observe the bioactivity of ovariectomized rats, ovariectomized group (Ovx), nonovariectomized group (Sham), ovariectomized Vitamin C-treat group (Ovx+Vit C), ovariectomized Vitamin E-treat group (Ovx+Vit E) and ovariectomized Vitamin C+Vitamin E-treat group(Ovx+Vit C+E) were made. Lipidperoxides of liver and kidney, serum total cholesterol and HDL-cholesterol were investigate as follows. Lipidperoxides of liver and kidney in Ovx group were 1.78 times and 1.61 times increased compared to Sham group respectively. But, they were significantly decreased in Ovx+Vit C group, Ovx+Vit E group, Ovx+Vit C+E group compared to Ovx group. Serum total cholesterol in Ovx group was increased 2.57 times compared to Sham group. Injections of each substance such as ascorbate, tocopherol, mixture (C+E) make data of Cholesterol become low. When especially Vit C is injected, the data of cholesterol lowed by about 94%. Serum HDL-cholesterol in Ovx group decreased 36.7% compared to Sham group. And as the result of the measurement of SOD, Catalase, and GPx which are antioxidant enzyme, SOD and Catalase activities in Ovx group much higher than in Sham group. Based on the results, it is supposed that more produced free radicals increased antioxidant enzyme. And it is also thought that vitamin can inhibit aging by reducing antioxidant enzyme.
This study were investigated the effects of dietary supplementation of yacon by-products and mugwort powder on performance, carcass characteristics, pH, TBARS (thiobarbituric acid reactive substance), WHC (water holding capacity), shear force and meat color of broiler thigh meat. Broiler chicks were fed diets for five weeks containing 0% yacon by-products and mugwort powder (Control), 0.5% yacon by-products powder (T1), 1.0% yacon by-products powder (T2), 0.5% mugwort powder (T3), and 1.0% mugwort powder (T4). There were no significant difference in performance among treatments, but mortality was decreased in diets by the supplementation of yacon by-products and mugwort powder than that of control. The total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol and triglyceride of control were higher than treatment groups and HDL-cholesterol of control was lower than treatment. The TBARS was significantly decreased by the supplementation of yacon by-products and mugwort powder compared to the control (P<0.05), especially, mugwort powder treatment group was significantly (P<0.05) more effective in improving freshness compared to other treatment groups. The WHC and shear force were not significantly different. CIE $L^*$ and $a^*$ value of treatment groups showed significantly higher value compared to the control, however, no difference in the CIE $b^*$ values was observed among treatment groups. In conclusion, a supplementation of yacon by-products and mugwort powder were effective in decreasing TBARS, total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol and increasing HDL-cholesterol concentration. Mugwort powder supplementation was most effective.
This study was conducted in order to investigate the effects of supplementation diets of mulberry leaves powder on performance, carcass characteristics, blood characteristics, and meat color of chicken meat. Broiler chicks were fed diets containing 0% mulberry leaves powder (Control), 1% mulberry leaves powder (T1), 2% mulberry leaves powder (T2), and 3% mulberry leaves powder (T3) for five weeks. The weight gain, feed intake, and feed conversion were no significant difference among treatment groups. The carcass weight, carcass ratio, gizzard, cecum, heart, and abdominal fat weight were not significantly different. The liver weight significantly decreased by the supplementation of mulberry leaves powder compared to the control (p<0.05). The total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol concentration of the control were higher than T3, but the HDL-cholesterol concentration, glucose, and albumin of the control were lower than those of the treatment groups (p<0.05). However, there were no significant difference in GPT and triglyceride concentration among treatments. In meat color, the CIE $L^*$ and $a^*$ value of treatment groups (T3) showed significantly higher value compared to the control, however, no difference in the CIE $b^*$ values was observed among treatment groups. In conclusion, these data indicate that 3% mulberry leaves powder supplementation was most effective in decreasing the total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol as well as increasing the HDL-cholesterol, glucose, and albumin concentration.

Aralia contientalis show several beneficial effects including anti-oxidant effects. Aralia contientalis is used as a therapeutic agent to stop haemorrhages and a tonic to promoted health in Korean and Chinese medicine. The pharmacokinetic profiles of the main Aralia contientalis is still not accurately investigated. In present study, I examined the effects of water extracts of Aralia contientalis on high cholesterol diet atherosclerosis-induced rats in serum and abdominal aorta. A total of 3-week old 9 male rats of Sprague-Dawley were divided into 3 groups and fed with the basal diet (normal group), high cholesterol diet (atherosclerosis induced group) for 8 weeks, high cholesterol diet supplemented with water extracts of Aralia contientalis (Aralia contientalis group) for 2 weeks. And rats were sacrificed, serum lipid level, abodominal aortic anti-oxidant activities and lipid peroxide were measured. These results indicated that serum total cholesterl, LDL-cholesterol, triglycerides concentration significently lowered in Aralia contientalis group than high cholesterol diet group. But HDL-cholesterol concentraion significently higher in Aralia contientalis group than high cholesterol diet group.
The objective of this study was to examine the effects of seven dietary oils on the serum lipid patterns of rats. Seventy weanling Wistar Kyoto rats were divided into seven groups of ten rats each. Walnut oil (rich in PUFA), wheat germ oil (rich in PUFA), corn oil (rich in PUFA), canola oil (rich in monounsaturated fatty acids), fish oil (rich in PUFA), primrose oil (rich in PUFA), and palm oil (rich in saturated fatty acids) were employed for 21 days. Serum total cholesterol concentrations for rats fed palm oil, walnut oil, and wheat germ oil were significantly higher than were concentrations for rats receiving corn oil. fish oil, and primrose oil. The mean serum LDL cholesterol values for rats fed fish oil, primrose oil, and corn oil were significantly lower than those for rats fed walnut oil, wheat germ oil, canola oil, and palm oil. HDL cholesterol concentrations were the highest when wheat germ oil was fed and the lowest when fish oil was fed. The feeding of wheat germ oil and palm oil to rats resulted in considerably higher serum triglyceride levels than did all other treatments. The feeding of wheat germ oil to rats resulted in considerably higher serum phospholipid levels. Serum phospholipid concentrations were significantly lower in rats fed the canola oil, fish oil, ,and primrose oil diets, when compared to concentrations achieved with the feeding of walnut oil, wheat germ oil, corn oil, and palm oil. Palm oil, which has a high ratio of saturated to polyunsaturated fatty acids, resulted in the highest serum total cholesterol and highest LDL cholesterol levels, while fish oil, primrose oil, and corn oil produced the lowest total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol. Wheat germ oil produced the highest values for HDL cholesterol, triglycerides, and phospholipids. In general, feeding oils rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids produced more favorable responses than feeding oils containing large amounts of monounsaturated or saturated fatty acids.

We investigated the effect of high molecular weight polygamma- glutamic acid (hm ${\gamma}$-PGA) on adiposity and lipid metabolism of rats in the presence of an obesity-inducing diet. Thirty-two Sprague-Dawley rats were fed either a normal-fat (11.4% kcal fat, NFC) or high-fat (51% kcal fat, HFC) diet. After 5 weeks, half of each diet-fed group was treated with hm ${\gamma}$-PGA (NFP or HFP) for 4 weeks. The HFC group had significantly higher body weight, visceral fat mass, fasting serum levels of total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and leptin, and lower serum HDL cholesterol level compared with those of the NFC group (p < 0.05). Treatment with hm ${\gamma}$-PGA decreased body weight gain and perirenal fat mass (p<0.05), fasting serum total cholesterol, and mRNA expression of glucose-6- phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD), regardless of dietary fat contents (p < 0.01). However, hm ${\gamma}$-PGA increased serum HDL cholesterol in the HFC group (p < 0.05). In vitro, 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme-A (HMGCoA) reductase activity was suppressed by the addition of hm ${\gamma}$-PGA. In agreement with observations in animal study, the supplementation of hm ${\gamma}$-PGA (150 mg/day) to 20 female subjects in an 8-week double-blind, placebocontrolled study resulted in a tendency to decrease total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol concentrations. We thus conclude that dietary supplementation of hm ${\gamma}$-PGA may act as a hypocholestrolemic agent, secondary to its inhibitor effect on HMG-CoA reductase, and decrease abdominal adiposity by decreasing hepatic lipogenesis. The present study is an important first step in establishing the effect of hm ${\gamma}$-PGA on cholesterol levels in rats and humans.
This study was conducted to examine the effect of dietary iron levels on lipid metabolism, antioxidative and antithrombogenic capacities in 16-month-old rats. Thirty-two Sprague-Dawley male 16-month-old rats weighing 618 $\pm$ 6 g were raised for 10 days with medium-iron diet (35 ppm in diet) and blocked into 4 groups according to their body weights. One of groups was sacrificed to obtain initial data and the rest 3 groups were raised for 3 months with experimental diets containing different levels of iron (5 ppm, 35 ppm, and 350 ppm). Total lipid, triglyceride and total chole-sterol concentrations in plasma and liver, HDL-cholesterol concentration in plasma, fecal total lipid triglyceride and total cholesterol excretions, thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) level in plasma LDL + VLDL (low density lipoprotein + very low density lipoprotein) fractions, blood-clotting time and eicosanoids levels in plasma were measured. The results are as follows: Plasma total lipid, triglyceride and total cholesterol concentrations, TBARS level in plasma LDL + VLDL fractions were increased and blood-clotting time tended to be shortened during 3 months of experimental period. Low (5 ppm) iron diet improved lipid metabolism via increasing HDL-cholesterol and fecal choles-terol excretion. High (350 ppm) iron diet decreased plasma total lipid, triglyceride and total cholesterol concentrations as compared to medium (35 ppm) iron diet and lowered body weight and epididymal fat pad weight. On the other hand, TBARS level in plasma LDL + VLDL fractions and blood-clotting time were increased with high iron diet. It is plausible that low iron diet improves lipid metabolism, antioxidative and antithrombogenic capacities in 16-month-old rats.
This study was done to compare serum levels of lipids, trace minerals, ceruloplasmin and ferroxidase activity between female college smokers and nonsmokers. Serum levels of lipids, Cu, Zn, ceruloplasmin and ferroxidase activity were determined in 33 smokers and 42 nonsmokers residing in the Seoul area. Serum levels of TG, total cholesterol and HDl-cholesterol were measured using test kits. Serum Cu Zn were determined by the AAS. Serum ceruloplasimin level and ferroxidase activity were determined by spectrophotometric methods. All data were statistically analyzed by the SAS PC package program. Mean and standard errors were calculated for each item, and the significance of the difference between two groups was evaluated by Student's t-test at p〈0.05. There was no significant difference in levels of total cholesterol, TG, VLDL-cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, LDL/HDL and atherogenic index, but HDL-cholesterol level was significantly lower(p$\ll$0.05) in female college smokers than in nonsmokers. Serum zinc level showed no significant difference, whereas copper level was significantly higher in smokers, consequently yielding higher Cu/Zn ratio in smoking college women. Ceruloplasmin level was 32.6mg/dl in smoking college women, which was significantly higher(p$\ll$0.05) than that of 28.6mg/dl in nonsmokers. However, cerulopasmin ferroxidase activity, 0.34U/mg in nonsmokers was higher(p$\ll$0.05) than that of 0.29U/mg in smokers. From these results, it is confirmed that cigarette smoking itself has a very detrimental effect on health and mineral nutritional status although the smoking history is relatively short among college women(pack-years=1.7). The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix on the high fat diet-induced hyperlipidemia in rats. Sixty male Sprague-Dawley rats, around 270g of B.W., were divided into normal, control, sample A and sample B group. Normal and control groups were orally administrated with saline during 4 weeks, sample A and sample B with 252.5mg/kg(rat) and 420.1 mg/kg(rat) of solid extract of Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix during 4 weeks respectively. Blood samples were collected from each of animals at 4 weeks, and used for the blood chemical analysis. Animals were sacrificed at 4 weeks, and chemical analysis was performed on the collected liver samples. The serum total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol levels of sample A group were significantly decreased compared with the control group. On the basis of these of results, it is confirmed that Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix has the curative effects on the hyperlipidemia in rats induced by high fat diet
Objective : In order to study effects of ${\lceil}Persicae\;Semen{\rfloor}$ on the hyperlipidemia rats induced by Triton WR, we have made hyperlipidemia rats by administering Triton WR-1339 for 3 days, then have administered. The results were summerized as follows : 1. The Total cholesterol, triglyceride, LDL-cholesterol, Free fatty acid, phospholipid and CRF(Cardiak Risk Factor) by hypercholesteremic rats injected by Triton WR-1339 of the herb-Acupuncture group were decreased as compared with those of the control group, especialy hypercholesteremic rats injected by Triton WR- 1339 of the herb-Acupuncture+Acupuncture group were some more decreased as compared with those of the control group. 2. The HDL-cholesterol by hypercholesteremic rats injected by Trion WR -1339 of the herb-Acupuncture group were increased as compeared those of control group, especialy hypercholesteremic rats injected by Triton WR-1339 of the herb-Acupuncture+Acupuncture group were some more increased as compared with those of the control group. According to the above results, Persicae Semen showed inhibition on decrease of serum total cholesterol, triglyceride and phosholipid contents as well as inhibition on increase of HDL-cholesterol contents in hyperlipidemia.
