This study was designed to investigate the association between the period of engraftment and the nutritional status of patient s undergoing bone marrow transplantation for acute myelogenous leukemia (AML). Nutritional status was evaluated by body mass index (BMI), percentage of ideal body weight (PIBW), percentage of weight loss, and serum albumin, total protein (T protein), hemoglobin (HGB) and hematocrit (HCT) levels on the day prior to transplantation and on the day of bone marrow transplantation. The periods of engraftment were determined by absolute neutrophil counts (ANC) above $500/mm^3$ from the day of bone marrow transplantation. The study subjects were 80 patients (55 males, 25 females) with acute myelogenous leukemia admitted to the University Hospital in Seoul. The result of this study is as follows : Tie nutritional status values of the majority of patients on the day prior to transplantation were in the normal range except for HGB and HCT ; however, during hospitalization, all of the levels of the nutritional status values were significantly decreased. The periods of engraftment of the abnormal group according to their BMI, PIBW, HGB and HCT levels on the day of bone marrow transplantation showed no difference when compared to the normal group. However, the periods of engraftment of the abnormal group, according to the percentage of weight loss, albumin, and T protein levels were significantly decreased when compared to the normal group. Therefore, the nutritional status of patients at the time of transplant had a noticeable influence on the periods of engraftment. Our results suggested that nutritional status is a critical factor of engraftment in BMT during pre-transplant and post-transplant. Futhermore, we recommend that the process of nutritional preparation for the transplant should initiate immediately after the transplant decision has been made.
Purpose: The evidence for an association between inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and obesity is conflicting. Therefore, we set out to review the body mass index (BMI) at presentation of IBD to understand if the rise of the obesity rate in the general population, lead to an increase of obesity in patients with IBD at the time of diagnosis. Methods: Retrospective review of all patients with IBD seen at Children's Hospital and Medical Center from January 1st 2010 to December 31st 2014. From the initial visit and endoscopy, we obtained: age; sex; BMI; disease phenotype; disease severity. Results: We had a total of 95 patients, 35 patients were excluded due to incomplete data or referral being made after diagnosis was made. 28 were males and 32 were females, Age range was 2-17 years. A 37 had Crohn's disease, 19 ulcerative colitis, and 4 indeterminate colitis. Disease severity in 19 cases was mild, 29 moderate and 12 severe. BMI distribution was as follows-obese (5.0%), overweight (6.7%), normal weight (65.0%), mild malnutrition (8.3%), moderate malnutrition (15.0%), severe malnutrition (1.7%). Conclusion: Our data is consistent with other series. Showing most children had a normal BMI, regardless of disease severity or phenotypes. One confounding factor is the possibility of delay in referral to GI. This could mean some obese children may fall in the normal BMI range at the time of diagnosis due to ongoing weight loss. Future studies should include prospective cohort studies, comparing incidence of IBD in obese and non-obese patients, severity at presentation, duration of symptoms, and clinical outcomes.

Object Although Taeeum and Soyang constitutional types have bigger body shapes and higher body mass index values than those with the Soeum, the relationship between the Sasang constitutional type and bone mass density is controversial and the association of osteopenia and osteoporosis remains unknown. Therefore, we investigated the relationship between bone mineral density, osteopenia, and osteoporosis according to Sasang constitutional type. Methods A total of 2,508 participants were included in this study. Among the study participants, 1,396 had Taeeum type, 276 had Soeum type, and 836 had Soyang type, respectively. The relationships to bone mass density, osteopenia, and osteoporosis in those with Sasang constitutional type were estimated using logistic and linear regression models. Results Bone mass density was significantly higher in the order of Taeeum, Soyang, and Soeum group (p < 0.01). Soeum group in comparison with Taeeum or Soyang group was significantly associated with a high odds ratio for osteopenia and osteoporosis except in the hip and femoral neck in the comparison of Taeeum and Soeum group (p < 0.01). Moreover, the bone mass density of Soeum group decreased more rapidly as the age increased when compared with Taeeum and Soyang group. Conclusions Our findings may contribute to the early prevention and management of high-risk individuals with poor bone mass density, osteopenia, and osteoporosis using Sasang constitution medicine.
This study was conducted to evaluate the weight reduction effect of yeast hydrolysate-SR101. Thirty female college students participated in a 6 week weight control program. All subjects were randomly assigned to either the placebo group, YH-SR101 (yeast hydrolysate-SR101) group, or eX diet (product of yeast hydrolysate-SR101) group. The mean energy intake of the placebo group was 1445.2${\pm}$364.0 kcal (carbohydrate: 60.1%, protein: 25.6%, fat: 14.3%), while those of the YH-SR101 and the eX diet group were 1505.6${\pm}$296.2 kcal (carbohydrate: 60.5%, protein: 22.2%, fat: 14.8%) and 1353.8${\pm}$326.3 kcal (carbohydrate: 63.2%, protein: 20.9%, fat: 15.9%), respectively. The placebo group lost 0.19${\pm}$1.14 kg of body weight, while the treatment groups (YH-SR101 and eX diet) lost 1.13${\pm}$0.83 and 1.54${\pm}$0.74 kg of body weight, respectively. There were significant differences in the decrease in body weight between the placebo and the treatment group (p<0.05). There were also significant differences in the decrease in fat mass between the placebo and treatment group (p<0.05). Furthermore, the BMI of the YH-SR101 and the eX diet groups also differed significantly before and after the diet program (p<0.05). Additionally, the BMI and waist size reduction of the treatment groups (YH-SR101 and eX diet group) differed significantly when compared to the placebo (p<0.05). The reduction of the resting metabolic rate (RMR) blood glucose, total-cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol and triglyceride did not differ significantly among groups. Taken together, these findings indicate that consumption of yeast hydrolysate-SR101 and eX Diet may lead to decreased body weight and fat.

Purpose: Weight loss and deterioration in body composition are observed in patients with gastric cancer (GC) following gastrectomy. This study aimed to investigate the impact of residual stomach volume (RSV) on the nutritional status and body composition of patients with GC treated with distal gastrectomy. Materials and Methods: In total, 227 patients who underwent minimally invasive distal gastrectomy with Billroth 1 anastomosis for stage I GC between February 2015 and May 2018 were enrolled. Clinicodemographic and laboratory data were collected from the GC registry. The RSV, abdominal muscle area, and subcutaneous/visceral fat areas were measured using computed tomography data. Results: A larger RSV was associated with a lower decrease in the nutritional risk index (P=0.004) and hemoglobin level (P=0.003) during the first 3 months after surgery, and better recovery at 12 months. A larger RSV demonstrated an advantage in the preservation of abdominal muscle area (P=0.02) and visceral fat (P=0.04) after surgery, as well as less reduction in weight (P=0.02) and body mass index (P=0.03). Conclusions: Larger RSV was associated with improved nutritional status and better preservation of muscle and fat after distal gastrectomy.

Background Perforator flaps minimize abdominal site morbidity during autologous breast reconstruction. The purpose of this study was to assess whether the number of perforators harvested influences the overall deep inferior epigastric perforator (DIEP) flap survival and flap-related complications. Methods A retrospective review was performed of all DIEP flaps performed at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania from 2006 to 2011. The outcomes assessed included flap loss and major complications. We compared flaps by the number of total perforators (1-4) and then carried out a subgroup analysis comparing flaps with one perforator to flaps with multiple perforators. Lastly, we conducted a post-hoc analysis based on body mass index (BMI) categorization. Results Three hundred thirty-three patients underwent 395 DIEP flaps. No significant differences were noted in the flap loss rate or the overall complications across perforator groups. However, the subgroup analysis revealed significantly higher rates of fat necrosis in the case of one-perforator flaps than in the case of multiple-perforator flaps (10.2% vs. 3.1%, P=0.009). The post-hoc analysis revealed a significant increase in the flap loss rate with increasing BMI (<30=2.0%, 30-34.9=3.1%, 35-39.9=3.1%, >40=42.9%, P<0.001) in the DIEP flaps, but no increase in fat necrosis. Conclusions This study demonstrates that the number of perforators does not impact the rate of flap survival. However, the rate of fat necrosis may be significantly higher in DIEP flaps based on a single perforator. Multiple perforators should be utilized if possible to decrease the risk of fat necrosis.
Objectives: Weight gain is one of the symptoms of hypothyroidism and it could deteriorate thyroid function. Our objectives are to evaluate weight changes and analyze adverse events in overweight and obese women with hypothyroidism who were prescribed Gamitaeeumjowee-tang. Methods: A retrospective chart review was conducted using medical records of patients with hypothyroidism, who had body mass indexes (BMI) above 23 and were prescribed Gamitaeeumjowee-tang for 12 weeks between August 2017 and November 2022. Reported adverse events (AEs) were assessed by severity, causality and system-organ classes. Results: Thirty patients were included (mean±standard deviation, age 46.10±9.94 years, weight 70.52±11.18 kg, BMI 28.30±3.80 kg/m2). The mean total weight loss of hypothyroidism patients was 5.45±2.77 kg, while the mean weight loss rate and mean BMI change were 7.66±3.41% and 2.18±1.07 kg/m2, respectively. Among evaluated causality of adverse events, 'Unlikely' was predominant (80.8%) and severity assessment showed most of the symptoms were mild (91.7%). Conclusions: Gamitaeeumjowee-tang could be an option for hypothyroidism patients, who are overweight or obese, to lose weight and no serious adverse events occurred. Further well-designed clinical studies are recommended.

The purpose of this study was to compare the effect of changing the order of exercise types on body composition and blood lipid in obese women. The subjects were 40-years obese women. They were trained during the 12 weeks by combined exercise program which included aerobic and resistant exercises. 1. In the cases of weight, A group(aerobics and resistance training)more decreased than B group(resistance training and aerobics). There was not statistically significant difference before and after 12-week combined exercise program between the groups. In the case of body fat mass, A group more decreased than B group. There was a statistically significant difference between the groups(p<0.01). Lean body mass, A group more increased than B group but there was a statistically significant difference between the groups. A and B groups were decreased in abdominal percent fat and there was a not statistically significant difference between the groups. 2. There were not any significant differences between two groups after 12-week combined exercise program at total cholesterol(TC), triglyceride, and high density lipo-protein(HDL) cholesterol. 3. In the case of blood glucose, group A showed more decreased than group B after 12-week combined exercise program. The difference before and after exercise program of A and B groups was statistically significant(p<0.01). In conclusion, the combined training which include resistant and aerobic exercise may use selectively to induce change of body composition and blood lipid for weight loss in 40-aged obese wome
The purpose of this study is to investigate initial nutritional status of stomach cancer patients. The study subjects were 88 patients with stomach cancer admitted at Kosin University Gospel Hospital in Busan. We assessed the initial nutritional status by anthropometric, biochemical and dietary intake data along with subjective global assessment(SGA). The results are as follows. 1. The mean age, weight, height, triceps skinfold thickness, mid arm circumference, and mid arm muscle circumference of the subjects were 55.9$\pm$11.0years, 60.0$\pm$9.8kg, 162.4$\pm$8.5cm, 10.9$\pm$5.7mm, 26.8$\pm$3.8cm, and 23.4$\pm$3.5cm respectively. The mean body mass index was within the normal range, with 22.7$\pm$2.8kg/m2, while 15.4% of the patients was underweight. The result shows that body fat mass and body protein mass of the patients with stomach cancer were decreased. 2. The mean biochemical data of the subjects were 4.0$\pm$0.5g/dl for albumin, 174.7$\pm$41.9mg/dl for cholesterol, 107.6$\pm$57.2mg/dl for triglyceride, 92.1μg/dl for Zn, 297.0$\pm$103.1mg/dl for transferrin, 1980.0$\pm$0.8$mm^3$ for total lymphocyte count. 3. Daily energy intake was 1997.8$\pm$579.3kcal. And the ratio of carbohydrate, protein, and lipid to energy intake was 72:14:14. 4. The patients were divided into three groups according to SGA performed by an observer. Group A(well nourished) was 55.7% with 49 patients, Group B(moderately malnourished) was 22.7 % with 20 patients, and Group C(severely malnourished) was 21.6 % with 19 patients. The three groups showed a significant difference in body weight(p<0.01), 1 month weight loss %(p<0.001), 6 months weight loss %(p<0.001), body mass index(p<0.01), and mid arm circumference(p<0.05), albumin(p<0.01), energy intake(p<0.05) as well as carbohydrate intake(p<0.05). From these results, it may be concluded that SGA can be used as a nutrition screening tool, and comprehensive nutrition assessment is desirable for those malnourished.

Objectives: The purpose of this study is to investigate the weight loss effects of auricular acupuncture in obese patients. Methods: Six databases (Research Information Sharing Service [RISS], Korean studies Information Service System [KISS], Oriental Medicine Advanced Searching Integrated System [OASIS], PubMed, The Cochrane Library, China National Knowledge Infrastructure [CNKI]) were searched up to May 20, 2020. Eight eligible randomized controlled trials were included the present study. The quality of included studies was assessed by the Cochrane risk of bias tool and a meta-analysis was performed by Review Manager software. A meta-analysis was conducted using a random-effects model and a subgroup analysis was performed to detect the sources of heterogeneity, identify the selection of acupuncture methods and explore its contributions to the weight loss effects. Results: Among 8 trials, 5 trials used auricular acupuncture and 2 trials used auricular acupressure, 1 trial used both types of intervention. Most commonly selected acupoints were Shenmen (TF4) and stomach (CO4). Treatment duration was six to twelve weeks, and total treatment session was six to twelve. Compared to the control groups, auricular acupuncture significantly decreased body weight, body mass index (BMI), high density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL) and ghrelin. For the selection of acupuncture methods, both methods performed similarly in most outcome except waist circumference (WC), body fat percentage (BFP), and triglycerides (TG). Conclusions: We found that auricular acupuncture can be effective for weight loss and controlling appetite. However, the findings should be interpreted with caution due to heterogeneity. So further vigorous and well-designed studies should be conducted to strengthen the evidence of the use of auricular acupuncture for obesity.
