A new magnetostrictive patch array transducer for the generation and detection of torsional waves is developed fur the on-line health monitoring of rotating shafts. Even though the torsional wave is useful in nondestructive evaluation due to its non-dispersive property, a transducer generating torsional waves in rotating shafts has not been developed so far. In this research, a torsional wave transducer using the magnetostrictive effect is newly developed. By bonding an away of magnetostrictive rectangular patches on the outer surface of the shaft at an oblique angle of $45^{\circ}$ and encircling the array by a solenoid coil, we have successfully generated and measured torsional waves by the developed transducer. Several experiments were carried out to check the transducer performance.
The aim of this paper is to study the propagation of torsional surface waves in non-homogeneous isotropic layer of finite thickness placed over a homogeneous viscoelastic half-space, when both density and rigidity of the non-homogeneous medium are assumed to vary exponentially with depth. The frequency equations are obtained by using simple method of separation of variables. Further, it is seen that when viscoelastic parameter and non-homogeneity parameter is neglected, the dispersion equation gives the dispersion equations of Love waves in homogeneous, elastic and isotropic layer placed over homogeneous viscoelastic medium. The problem has been solved numerically and the effects of various inhomogeneities of the medium on torsional waves have been illustrated graphically.

The paper describes a theoretical and experimental study on the speed of the torsional elastic waves propagating in an axisymmetirc waveguide whose cross-sectional area varies periodically as an harmonic function of the axial coordinate. The approximate solution of the phase speed has been obtained using the perturbation technique for sinusoidal modulation of small amplitude. The experiment verifying the theoretical result consists of transmitting and receiving torsional waves by magnetostriction and measuring the wave speed in the waveguides with threaded surfaces.
The paper describes a theoretical study on the speed of torsional elastic waves propagating in a circular rod whose material properties vary periodically as harmonic functions of the axial coordinate. An approximate solution for the phase speed has been obtained by using the perturbation technique for sinusoidal modulation of small amplitude. This solution shows that the wave speed in the nonuniform rod is dependent on the wave frequency as well as the periodic variation of the material properties. It implies that the torsional waves considered in this paper are dispersive even in the fundamental mode.

A torsional guided wave mode in a tubular structure has many advantages in obtaining a higher sensitivity and lower attenuation for a defect, because it shows no dispersion characteristics and no radial displacement for a tubular structure. Many attempts have been made to excite and receive torsional guided waves by conventional piezoelectric transducers, but only a few examples are used during a practical field inspection. In this study, an array of electromagnetic acoustic transducers (EMATs) were for an excitation and reception of the torsional guided waves in a pipe was designed and fabricated. The signal patterns were analyzed based on various beam path length. The feasibility of detecting the defects was investigated through a series of experiments with artificial notches on a pipe.

The objective of this investigation is to develop an efficient method to generate and measure torsional waves in non-ferromagnetic waveguides by using magnetostrictive transducers. In existing methods using a nickel strip that is attached circumferentially to the test specimen, large current input to the magnetostrictive transducer often generates undesired wave modes in addition to the desired torsional wave. However, we propose a new method to generate the torsional waves without being accompanied with other undesirable wane modes regardless of the input current magnitude. The specific transducer configuration is suggested and its performance is also checked through a series of experiments.

The objective of this investigation is to develop an efficient method to generate and measure torsional waves in non-ferromagnetic waveguides by using magnetostrictive transducers. In existing methods using a nickel strip that is attached circumferentially to the test specimen such as aluminum pipes, large current input to the magnetostrictive transducer often generates undesired wave modes in addition to desired torsional wave. However, we propose an improved method to generate the torsional waves without being accompanied by other undesirable wave modes regardless of the input current magnitude. The specific transducer configuration and its performance will be presented in the present investigation.
We examined variations of the solar wind magnetic fields which are characterized by smooth field rotations with time scales of 2-7 hours, and identified the existence of two classes of structures. One is a small-scale magnetic flux rope, and the other shows clear characteristics of Alfven waves. In this study, we attempted to clarify fundamental characteristics of the structure of the second class. We have found that the observed features are basically described by the cylindrical structure consisting of the uniform background field and the circular torsional wave field propagating along the background field. We performed the least-squares fitting analysis for the observed rotational variations with a simple model of the torsional Alfven wave as described above. The fitted results show satisfactory agreement with observations and thus allow us to determine the structure of the region occupied by the torsional Alfven wave. Furthermore, the examination of ACE and WIND observations reveals several cases in which two spacecrafts encountered the same structure at different position and different times. Comparison of such cases provides further evidence that the observed rotational field variations are due to the torsional Alfven waves, and not due to elliptically-polarized Alfven waves.
The paper aims to analyze the behaviour of torsional type surface waves propagating through fluid saturated inhomogeneous porous media clamped between two inhomogeneous anisotropic media. We considered three types of inhomogeneities in upper anisotropic layer which varies exponentially, quadratically and hyperbolically with depth. The anisotropic half space inhomogeneity varies linearly with depth and intermediate layer is taken as inhomogeneous fluid saturated porous media with sinusoidal variation. Following Biot, the dispersion equation has been derived in a closed form which contains Whittaker's function and its derivative, for approximate result that have been expanded asymptotically up to second term. Possible particular cases have been established which are in perfect agreement with standard results and observe that when one of the upper layer vanishes and other layer is homogeneous isotropic over a homogeneous half space, the velocity of torsional type surface waves coincides with that of classical Love type wave. Comparative study has been made to identify the effects of various dimensionless parameters viz. inhomogeneity parameters, anisotropy parameters, porosity parameter, and initial stress parameters on the torsional wave propagation by means of graphs using MATLAB. The study has its own relevance in connection with the propagation of seismic waves in the earth where fluid saturated poroelastic layer is present.
A torsional guided wave was applied to detect a defect in petrochemical pipes. Phase and group velocity dispersion curves for the longitudinal and torsional modes of the inspected pipe were presented for the theoretical analysis. It was found through mode shape analysis that there was mode conversion when torsional wave is incident at an asymmetric defect. An artificial notch was fabricated in the pipe and the detectability was examined from the distance 2m of the end of the pipe by using magnetostrictive sensors. The relativities between the amplitude of the reflected signal and the size of the defect was examined. It was shown that the T(0,1) mode could be used for the long range inspection for the petrochemical pipes.
