  • In this paper, a new and simplified method is presented in which the natural frequencies of the uniform and non-uniform beams are calculated through simple mathematical relationships. The various vibration problems such as: Rayleigh beam under variable axial force, axial vibration of a bar with and without end discrete spring, torsional vibration of a bar with an attached mass moment of inertia, flexural vibration of the beam with laterally distributed elastic springs and also flexural vibration of the beam with effects of viscose damping are investigated. The governing differential equations are first obtained and then; according to a harmonic vibration, are converted into single variable equations in terms of location. Through repetitive integrations, the governing equations are converted into weak form integral equations. The mode shape functions of the vibration are approximated using a power series. Substitution of the power series into the integral equations results in a system of linear algebraic equations. The natural frequencies are determined by calculation of a non-trivial solution for system of equations. The efficiency and convergence rate of the current approach are investigated through comparison of the numerical results obtained with those obtained from other published references and results of available finite element software.

  • The paper begins by presenting a unified variational approach to the lateral-torsional buckling (LTB) analysis of doubly symmetric prismatic and tapered thin-walled beams with open cross-sections, which accounts for the influence of the pre-buckling deflections. This approach (i) extends the kinematical assumptions usually adopted for prismatic beams, (ii) consistently uses shell membrane theory in general coordinates and (iii) adopts Trefftz's criterion to perform the bifurcation analysis. The proposed formulation is then applied to investigate the influence of the pre-buckling deflections on the LTB behaviour of prismatic and web-tapered I-section simply supported beams and cantilevers. After establishing an interesting analytical result, valid for prismatic members with shear centre loading, several elastic critical moments/loads are presented, discussed and, when possible, also compared with values reported in the literature. These numerical results, which are obtained by means of the Rayleigh-Ritz method, (i) highlight the qualitative differences existing between the LTB behaviours of simply supported beams and cantilevers and (ii) illustrate how the influence of the pre-buckling deflections on LTB is affected by a number of factors, namely ($ii_1$) the minor-to-major inertia ratio, ($ii_2$) the beam length, ($ii_3$) the location of the load point of application and ($ii_4$) the bending moment diagram shape.

  • In this paper, a novel radial beam coupling model was proposed and the design parameters were studied for the efficient transmission of torque. To develop a high performance radial beam coupling, an analytical way to predict the performance in design phase is required. One of the best ways to estimate the performance of the coupling without manufacturing is to evaluate the stress and torsional stiffness by building a finite element model with a special attention to the radial beam cutting part. For the best results of FEA, the material properties were obtained through testing. To verify the reliability of finite element model, the results of FEA were compared with the experiments. The main design parameters of radial beam cutting width, radial beam cutting depth, and radial beam cutting direction were considered for the performance of radial beam coupling.

  • As part of the effort to reduce the weight of powertrain, a hollow crankshaft has been designed. The mass reduction of the crankshaft changes the dynamic properties of the crankshaft such as moment of inertia, and torsional, bending stiffness. The purpose of this paper is to compare the dynamic behavior of the hollow crankshaft with that of the original, solid crankshaft. Global dynamic behavior of the crankshaft is analyzed bgy the transfer matrix method(TMM). The crankshaft has been modeled by 38 lumped mass and stiffness elements. The dynamic patameters of each lumped element are provided by Finite Element Method(FEM). The responses of the crankshaft from TMM are fed back as loading conditions to the Finite Element model to obtain dynamic stresses for critical areas of the crankshaft.

  • The bridge to be analyzed is a self-anchored suspension bridge which is constructed within the country. Forced vibration test was performed with oscillator for verification of safety, maintenance and management. In this study, the feasibility of deduction was verified with the modified analysis model by comparing natural frequency, natural mode and damping ratio of the real bridge, which are obtained from the vibration test of the whole bridge after construction of 3-dimensional self-anchored cable suspension bridge, with the eigenvalue of analytic computation model and evaluating them. As a result of study, the friction of bridge bearing must be considered to get the natural frequencies of flexural vibration, and evaluating the polar moment of inertia is critical factor in analysis modeling in case of torsional vibration. The logarithmic damping ratio of the test appeared to exceed the ordinary one assumed at the design phase.

  • In this paper described is the software developed to calculate the physical properties of arbitrary section shape. The software consists of arbitrary section display module(ASDM) and section property calculation module(SPCM). ASDM defines and displays the shape of arbitrary section and SPCM calculates its properties such as area, centroid, moment of inertia, torsional constant, etc.. In many cases, calculation of section properties is not easy because user has to define the vertex coordinates which are difficult to do so in the case of arbitrary section. In the developed software, however, since user is asked to define only points of central lines and thickness of arbitrary section, the calculattion task of arbitrary section is very effective.

  • In this paper, the dynamic system modeling and the state sensitivity analysis of the spin-coater system for the reduction of the vibration are proposed. In the respect of modeling, the spin-coater system is composed of components of servomotor, belt, spindle, and a supported base. Each component is defined and combined modeling is derived to 3dimensional equations. Verification of modeling is verified by experimental values of actual system in the frequency domain. By direct differentiation the constraint equations with respect to kinematic design variables, such as eccentricity of spindle, moment of inertia, torsional stiffness and damping of supported base, sensitivity equations are derived to the verified state equations. Sensitivity of design variables could be used for vibration reduction and natural frequency shift in the frequency domain. Finally, dominant design variables ...

  • In this paper, an optimization method of thin walled beam structures is proposed, Stiffnesses of a thin walled beam are characterized by the thickness of thin plates and the shape of the typical section of the beam. Explicit formula for section properties such as area, area moment of inertia, and torsional constants are derived using the response surface method. The explicit formula can be used for the optimal design of a structural system which consists of complicated thin walled beams. A vehicle structural system is optimized to demonstrate the proposed method.

  • A Dual Mass Flywheel(D.M.F.) system is an evolution to the reduction of torsional vibration and impact noise occurring in powertrain when a vehicle is either moving or idling. The D.M.F. system has two flywh-eels, which is different from the conventional clutch system. One section belongs to the mass moment of in-ertia of the engine-side. The other section increases the mass moment of inertia of the transmission-side. These two masses are connected via a spring/damping system. This reduces the speed at which the dreaded resonance occurs to below idle speed. Since 1984m D.M.F. system has been developed. However, the processes of development of D.M.F. system don't have any difference from the trial and error method of conventional clutch system. This paper present the method for systematical design of D.M.F. system with dimensionless design varia-bles of D.M.F. system, mass ratio between two flywheels, natural frequency rate of two flywheels, and visc-osity coefficient. And expermental results are used to prove these theoretical results.
