  • In a shear wall-frame structural system, the structural response is determined by the interaction between the shear wall in bending mode and the frame in shear mode. In order to effectively consider these characteristics of a shear wall-frame structure, the simplified numerical model using the T-shape rigid body was suggested in the previous study. Based on the previously proposed model, an efficient numerical model for a wall-frame structure with an eccentric core has been proposed in this study. To this end, the previously proposed 2D model is extended to the 3D model and it is enhanced by considering torsion effects. As a result, the enhanced model can be applied to the analysis of a wall-frame structure with an eccentric core as well as a centric core.

  • Torsion is one of the most important causes of building collapse during earthquakes. Sometimes, despite the symmetric form of the building, infill walls disturb the symmetry of the lateral resisting system. The purpose of this research is to investigate the effect of urban layout on developing torsion caused by infill walls. For this purpose, a typological study was conducted based on the conditions of perimeter walls on 364 buildings and then 9 cases were selected. The dimensions of the selected buildings are constant and the conditions of the perimeter walls including facades with openings and cantilevered facades are variable. The selected buildings with 60 different layouts of infill walls were analyzed and the behavior of each one was evaluated based on the torsional irregularity criteria of seismic codes. The results of the analyses showed that if the perimeter walls of a building are symmetric, asymmetric interior walls will not be important in developing torsion and effective parameters in symmetry of the perimeter infill walls are the number of walls, area of openings, aspect ratio, and construction details. Finally, architectural solutions to mitigate the torsional effects of infill walls were proposed for buildings with solid infill walls on some sides, for buildings where the perimeter walls of one side are on the cantilevered part, and for buildings where the perimeter walls of two adjacent sides are on the cantilevered part. In three-sided buildings, where two adjacent façades are cantilevered, it is often impossible to use the potential of the infill walls.

  • The objective of this study is to construct the TPU aerodynamic database with wind tunnel test data of overall wind loads and responses on tall buildings. In this study, wind tunnel tests were conducted to investigate characteristics of wind forces and the effect of wind load combination by cross-correlation analysis among along-wind overturning moment, across-wind overturning moment and torsional moment on a tall building with various side ratios(D/B=0.33, 0.50, 0.77, 0.83, 0.91, 1.0, 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 2.0 and 3.0) for different terrain roughnesses. The results of wind tunnel tests were compared with those of past literatures. As a result, there was no significant effects of changing of terrain roughnesses on moment coefficients and power spectral densities of across-wind overturning moment coefficients and torsional moment coefficients with various side ratios. Further, these results were good agreement with those of past literatures. From cross-correlation analysis, the across-wind overturning moment coefficients were highly correlated with the torsional moment coefficients. The results of this study will be helpful for practical designers in preliminary design stage.

  • In this study, we performed a loading test to evaluate the effect of load distribution on continuous two-span plate-girder bridges with or without bottom lateral bracing using one-fifth-scale bridge specimens. From the test results, when specimens with lateral bracing were loaded eccentrically, the load distribution capacity of the concrete deck and cross beam improved and greater loading was distributed to the other side of the girder subjected to loading. The load distribution rate of the specimens with and without lateral bracing system was evaluated from the analytical model that was verified by the test results. From the result of the quantitative evaluation, when specimen without lateral bracing was loaded eccentrically, mostly 21% of loading according to the concrete deck was distributed to the other side of the girder subjected to loading. However, when specimen with lateral bracing was loaded eccentrically, the load distribution rate increased by 1.7 times as all cross beams, bracing and concrete deck participated in load distribution. The reason is that the torsional rigidity increased as the model with lateral bracing behaved like a pseudo-closed box section.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the dynamic behavior of highway bridge due to moving vehicle load, considering the effect of laminated rubber bearing. Dynamic behaviors of bridge considering the effect of bearings are studied with 3-dimensional bridge and vehicle models. To analyze the effect of bearings on the dynamic behaviors of superstructures of bridges, laminated rubber bearing is modeled as 3-dimensional frame element with equivalent stiffness and damping, and the models are included in the bridge analysis model. The results from the analytical models with laminated rubber bearing show a significant effects on dynamic responses and more complex vibration characteristics compared with the results from the bridge with pot bearings. Generally, larger dynamic amplification factors are obtained in the case of laminated rubber bearing, which is mainly due to the smaller torsional stiffness of the bridge with laminated rubber bearing. It can be recommended that were careful consideration on the vibration of bridges and dynamic load allowance in design are needed when adopting laminated rubber bearing.

  • A liner static and dynamic analysis for a golf shaft, which is made of carbon fiber reinforced composite materials, is presented in this study. Major mechanical parameters of golf shafts such as deflection, torsional angel, frequency of vibration(CPM), and kick point are analyzed by finite element method. The effects of major parameters on the performance of golf shafts are also discussed. The results show that the major parameters of golf shafts are strongly dependent on the material properties of fibers and design pattern of golf shafts. The present results will be useful to design sheet-rolled golf shafts.

  • This paper presents the results of an elastic buckling analysis of elastically restrained orthotropic plate with a longitudinal stiffener under in-plane linearly distributed load. It is assumed that the loaded edges of web plate are simply supported and other two edges are elastically restrained against rotation. The stiffener is modeled as a beam element and its torsional rigidity is neglected. For the buckling analysis Lagrangian multiplier method is employed. The effects of restraint and longitudinal stiffener are presented in a graphical form.

  • The effects of various factors were studied on the process of a steel cord by twisting wires. To remove residual twisting moment after the steel cord process, the twisting angles of residual elasti c twisting and overtwisting were measured and compared with finite element results. The agreement between experimental data and finite element calculations was good for the angles of residual elastic twisting and over-twisting. The stress distributions in a steel cord under complex loading conditions were also obtained by using the finite element analysis.

  • When one opens the door of a microwave oven during operation, microwave might leak through the clearance of the door. Present research has been motivated by the need to reduce the possible clearance by enhancing torsional stiffness of the door of the microwave oven. Static deformation of the door frame of the oven is analyzed under a door-opening force. On the basis of the topological optimization, the right flange of the door frame is shown to need reinforcing. Several types of reinforcing brackets weldable to the right flange is proposed, and their effects to the stiffness of the door frame are compared and evaluated.

  • In this investigation, experimental attempts were made to observe and determine the variations in elastic of the PVC depending on the amounts of MBS added to the mixture, PVC/MBS, and also on the thicknesses of the specimens. An acoustic resonance technique was used for the tests in this investigation. It serves as a method to characterize properties of materials set in vibrational motions, which is initiated by low level stresses generated by externally supplied acoustic energy. Substantial variations were observed in the test results with the addition of the MBS to the PVC. It was found that the magnitudes of elastic constants decrease when MBS rubber was added in the range up to 9 phr and the shape factor effect in torsional vibration is more significant than the shape factor effect in flexural vibration.
