This paper presents the design concept and operation results of float-off for FSO (340,000 DWT Class, ELF AMENAM KPONO Project) built on the ground, without dry dock facilities. It was the first attempt to build FSO, completely, on the ground and launch it using DBU (Double Barge Unit, which was connected by rigid frame structure.) The major characteristics of FSO, which are similar to general VLCC type hull, including topside structure, weigh 51,000 metric ton. In order to have sufficient stability during the deck immersion of DBU, while passing through a minimum water plane area zone, proper trim control was completed with LMC (Load Master Computer). The major features of the monitoring system include calculation for transverse bending moment, shear force, local strength check of each connector, based on component stress, and deformation check during the load-out and float-off. Another major concern during the operation was to avoid damages at the bottom and sides of FSO, due to motion & movement after free-floating; therefore, adequate clearances between DBU and FSO were to be provided, and guide posts were installed to prevent side damage of the DBU casings. This paper also presents various measures that indecate the connector bending moment, damage stability analysis, and mooring of DBU during float off.
The paper deals with comparative study of various surrogate models based approximate optimization in the structural design of the passive type deck support frame under design load conditions. The passive type deck support frame was devised to facilitate both transportation and installation of 20,000 ton class topside. Structural analysis was performed using the finite element method to evaluate the strength performance of the passive type deck support frame in its initial design stage. In the structural analysis, the strength performances were evaluated for various design load conditions. The optimum design problem based on surrogate model was formulated such that thickness sizing variables of main structure members were determined by minimizing the weight of the passive type deck support frame subject to the strength performance constraints. The surrogate models used in the approximate optimization were response surface method, Kriging model, and Chebyshev orthogonal polynomials. In the context of numerical performances, the solution results from approximate optimization were compared to actual non-approximate optimization. The response surface method among the surrogate models used in the approximate optimization showed the most appropriate optimum design results for the structure design of the passive type deck support frame.

In this study, finite element analysis was performed to evaluate a method of increasing the fatigue life of the pipe connection structure commonly used in the topside structure of offshore platforms. MSC Patran/Nastran, a commercial analysis program, was used, and the critical structural model was selected from the global analysis. To realize the stress concentration phenomenon according to the load, modeling using 8-node solid elements was implemented. The main loads were considered to be two lateral loads and a tensile load on a diagonal pipe. To check the hotspot stress at the main location, a 0.01 mm dummy shell element was applied. After calculating the main stress at the 0.5-t and 1.5-t locations, the stress generated in the weld was estimated through extrapolation. In some sections, this stress was observed to be below the fatigue life that should be satisfied, and reinforcement was required. For reinforcement, a bracket was added to reduce the stress concentration factor where the fatigue life was insufficient without changing the thickness or diameter of the previously designed pipe. Regarding the tensile load, the stress in the bracket toe increased by 23 %, whereas the stress inside and outside of the pipe, which was a problem, decreased by approximately 8 %. Regarding the flexural load, the stress at the bracket toe increased by 3 %, whereas the stress inside and outside of the pipe, which was also a problem, decreased by approximately 48 %. Owing to the new bracket reinforcement, the stress in the bracket toe increased, but the S-N curve itself was better than that of the pipe joint, so it was not a significant problem. The improvement method of fatigue life is expected to be useful; it can efficiently increase the fatigue life while minimizing changes to the initial design.

The latest trend of development for submarine oil field is caused by the drained oil and gas for ground field, and FPSO is a keyword as the development for submarine oil field. FPSO (Floating Production Storage Offloading) is a kind of vessel type have a topside system for production of oil and gas and store them until the oil or gas can be offloaded onto a tanker or transported through a pipeline. Prior to the introduction of reinforcement under the pull-in winch on the STP extended top as the object of this paper, the technical background shall be introduced such as FPSO and the system and main equipments for STP as follows. The original structural concept for reinforcement of pull-in winch on the STP top and extended structure on moonpool was proposed by buyer's engineering team but it was much modified and improved in accordance with builder's fabrication and construction method.
This study proposes an empirical formulation to predict the maximum deformation of offshore blast wall structure that is subjected to impact loading caused by hydrocarbon explosion. The blast wall model is assumed to be supported by a simply-supported boundary condition and corrugated panel is modelled. In total, 1,620 cases of LS-DYNA simulations were conducted to predict the maximum deformation of blast wall, and they were then used as input data for the development of the empirical formulation by regression analysis. Stainless steel was employed as materials and the strain rate effect was also taken into account. For the development of empirical formulation, a wide range of parametric studies were conducted by considering the main design parameters for corrugated panel, such as geometric properties (corrugation angle, breadth, height and thickness) and load profiles (peak pressure and time). In the case of the blast profile, idealised triangular shape is assumed. It is expected that the obtained empirical formulation will be useful for structural designers to predict maximum deformation of blast wall installed in offshore topside structures in the early design stage.

Recently, the demand for the Floating, Production, Storage, and Offloading facility (FPSO) which has some economic and technical advantages, has increased in offshore oil production areas. The 36,8000 DWT class FPSO was built in Hyundai Heavy Industries and will be installed in Offshore Angola. She dose not have self-propulsion system, but has additional facilities for oil production and positioning system. Main noise sources are contributing to the cabin noise of the accommodation are classified into three classes such as the machinery in the engine room and the deckhouse, HVAC system, and the topside equipments. In general, the noise regulation for the offshore structure is severer than that of the cargo ship and acceptable noise limit of cabin is specified as 45 dB(A). This paper describes the procedure of noise analysis, the countermeasures of noise control, and the measurement results of the quay trial. In order to minimize the noise levels, careful attention have to be paid by the special committee of experts from the initial design stage to the delivery. Proper countermeasures, considering the characteristics of sources and receiver spaces, were applied from the noise prediction and various experiment results. Finally, this ship was successfully delivered with excellent noise properties. The technology to minimize the noise levels for FPSO has been established throughout the construction of this ship.

Recently, the demand for the Floating, Production Storage, and Offloading facility(FPSO) which has some economic and technical advantages, has increased in offshore oil production areas. The basic characteristics of a 343,000 DWT class FPSO which is being built in Hyundai Heavy Industries and shall be installed in offshore Angola, is almost same as that of oil carriers. However, she do not have self-propulsion system, but has additional facilities for oil production and positioning system. Main noise source contributing to the cabin noise of the accommodation, are classified into the machine in the engine room and the deckhouse, HVAC system, and the topside equipments. In general, the noise regulation for the offshore structure is much severer than that of the common commercial ships and the maximum acceptable sound pressure level of cabins is specified in 45dB(A). This paper describes the procedure of noise analysis along with its results. Noise analysis has been carried out for the case of emergency diesel generator running condition and the case of normal production condition and the results has been compared with the measurement results of the first case. Based on the results, proper countermeasures to reduce excessive noise level has been applied considering the characteristics of sources and receiver spaces and can be satisfied the specifications at all spaces.
Current industrial practices and approaches are simplified and do not describe the actual behavior of plated elements of offshore topside structures for safety design due to fires. Therefore, it is better to make up for the defective methods with integrated fire safety design methods based on fire resistance characteristics such as residual strength capacity. This study numerically investigates the residual strength of steel stiffened panels exposed to hydrocarbon jet fire. A series of nonlinear finite element analyses (FEAs) were carried out with varying probabilistic selected exposures in terms of the jet fire location, side, area, and duration. These were used to assess the effects of exposed fire on the residual strength of a steel stiffened panel on a ship-shaped offshore structure. A probabilistic approach with a feasible fire location was used to determine credible fire scenarios in association with thermal structural responses. Heat transfer analysis was performed to obtain the steel temperature, and then the residual strength was obtained for the credible fire scenarios under compressive axial loading using nonlinear FEA code. The results were used to derive closed-form expressions to predict the residual strength of steel stiffened panels with various exposure to jet fire characteristics. The results could be used to assess the sustainability of structures at risk of exposure to fire accidents in offshore installations.

The electron density and temperature in the topside ionosphere are observed by the ionosphere Measurement Sensor (IMS) onboard the KOMPSAT-1, which has the sun-synchronous orbit of the altitude of 685 km and the orbital inclination of $98^{\circ}$ with a descending node at 22:50LT. Observations have been analyzed to determine the seasonal variations of the electron density and temperature in the low-latitude region. Only the night-time (22:50LT) behavior on magnetically quiet days (Kp < 4) has been examined. Observations show a strong longitudinal and seasonal variation. Generally, in the dip equator the density increases and the temperature decreases. In equinox the latitudinal distributions of the electron density and temperature are quite symmetric about the dip equator. However, the local maximum of the density and the local minimum of the temperature shift toward the Northern hemisphere in summer solstice but the Southern hemisphere in winter solstice. Such variations are due to the influences of field-aligned plasma transport induced by F region neutral wind. Compared with the IRI95 model, the observed electron density and temperature show significant differences from those predicted by the IRI95 model.
Motion reduction of an offshore structure at resonant frequency is essential for avoiding critical damage to the topside and mooring system. A damping plate has a distinct advantage in reducing the motion of a floating structure by increasing the added mass and the damping coefficient. In this study, the heave motion responses of a circular cylinder with an impermeable and a permeable damping plate attached at the bottom of the cylinder were investigated thru a model test. The viscous damping coefficients for various combinations of porosity were obtained from a free-decay test by determining the ratio between any pair of successive amplitudes. Maximum energy dissipation occurred at a porous plate with a porosity P = 0.1008. Experimental results for regular and irregular waves were compared with an analytical solution by Cho (2011). The measured heave RAO and spectrum reasonably followed the trends of the predicted values. A significant motion reduction at resonant frequency was pronounced and the heaving-motion energy calculated by the integration of the area under the heave motion spectrum was reduced by more than 75% by the damping plate. However, additional energy dissipation by eddies of strong vorticity and flow separation inside a porous damping plate was not found in the present experiments.
