  • In this paper, a systematic beam splitter design for multi-beam forming is proposed. The objective of this research is to a design beam splitter that splits and focuses scattering microwaves into intense beams in multiple directions. It is difficult to split multi-beam to non-specific directions with theoretical approaches. Therefore, instead of using transformation optics(TO), which is a widely used process for controlling electromagnetic wave propagation, we used a systematic design process called the phase field design method to obtain an optimal topological structure of beam splitter. The objective function is to maximize the norm of electric field of the target areas of each direction. To avoid island structure and obtain the structure in one body, volume constraint is added to the optimization problem by using augmented Lagrangian. Target frequency is set to X-band 10GHz. The optimal beam splitter performed well in multi-beam forming and the transported electric energy of target areas improved. A frequency dependency test was conducted in the X-band to determine effective frequency range.

  • Spin-orbit coupling (SOC) effect is known to be the physical origin for various exotic magnetic phenomena in the low-dimensional systems. Recently, SOC also draws lots of attention in the study on magnetically doped thermoelectric alloys to determine their properties as the thermoelectric application as well as the topological insulator via the exact electronic structures determination near the Fermi level. In this research, aiming to investigate the spin-orbit coupling effect on the structural properties such as the lattice constants and the bulk modulus of the most widely investigated thermoelectric host material, $Bi_2Te_3$, we carried out the first-principles electronic structure calculation using the all-electron FLAPW (full-potential linearized augmented plane-wave) method. Employing both the local density approximation (LDA) and the generalized gradient approximation (GGA), the structural optimization is achieved by varying the in-plane lattice constant fixing the perpendicular lattice constant and vice versa, to find that the SOC effect increases the equilibrium lattices slightly in both directions while it markedly reduces the bulk modulus value implying the strong orientational dependence, which are attributed to the material's intrinsic structural anisotropy.

  • A genetic algorithm (GA) is a stochastic direct search strategy that mimics the process of genetic evolution. The GA applied herein works on a population of structural designs at any one time, and uses a structured information exchange based on the principles of natural selection and wurvival of the fittest to recombine the most desirable features of the designs over a sequence of generations until the process converges to a "maximum fitness" design. Principles of genetics are adapted into a search procedure for structural optimization. The methods consist of three genetics operations mainly named selection, cross- over and mutation. In this study, a method of finding the optimum topology of truss/beam structure is pro- posed by using the GA. In order to use GA in the optimum topology problem, chromosomes to FEM elements are assigned, and a penalty function is used to include constraints into fitness function. The results show that the GA has the potential to be an effective tool for the optimal design of structures accounting for sizing, geometrical and topological variables.variables.

  • High-.ate in-situ$ YBa_2$Cu$Cu_3$$O_{7-x}$ (YBCO) film growth was demonstrated by means of the electron beam co-evaporation. Even though our oxygen pressure is low, ∼$5 ${\times}$10^{-5}$ Torr, we can synthesize as-grown superconducting YBCO films at a deposition rate of around 10 nm/s. Relatively high temperatures of around 90$0^{\circ}C$ was necessary in this process so far, and it suggests that this temperature at a given oxygen activity allows a Ba-Cu-O liquid formation along with an YBCO epitaxy. Local critical current density shows a clear correlation with local resistivity. Homogeneous transport properties with a large critical current density ($4 ∼ 5 MA/\textrm{cm}^2$ at 77K, 0T) are observed in top faulted region while it is found that the bottom part carries little supercurrent with a large local resistivity. Therefore, it is possible that thickness dependence of critical current density is closely related with a topological variation of good superconducting paths and/or grains in the film bodies. The information derived from it may be useful in the characterization and optimization of superconducting films for electrical power and other applications.

  • This paper presents a new approach using an Improved branch exchange (IBE) technique to maximize the voltage stability as well as loss minimization in radial power systems. A suitable voltage stability index (VSI) for optimal routing algorithm is developed using novel methods both a critical transmission path based on a voltage phasor approach and an equivalent impedance method. Furthermore, the proposed algorithm can automatically detect the critical transmission path to be reached to a critical load faced with voltage collapse due to additional real or reactive leading. To develop an effective optimization technique, we also have applied a branch exchange algorithm based on a newly derived index of loss change. The proposed IBE algorithm for VSI maximization can effectively search the optimal topological structures of distribution feeders by changing the open/closed states of the sectionalizing and tie switches. The proposed algorithm has been tested with the various radial power systems to show its favorable performance.

  • This study carried out simulation for structural layout design for concrete structures by using the models of the ground structure method. The micro lattice truss is modeled as assemblage of a number of unit cells. The progress of analysis repeat to undergo finite element analysis to feed-back results of stress to the stiffness of each member. Through the repeated this analysis, truss model is represented to form the topological materials and the structural shape with the use of the local stress condition without mathematical optimum tools. It is successful to analyse the shape-layout problem as numerical samples on the lattice truss model.

  • In this paper, the voltage measurement-based coordinated Voltage/VAR control (VMCVVC) algorithm for conservation voltage reduction(CVR) is proposed. The proposed algorithm has the purpose of enhancing the CVR effect through coordinated control of the voltage control devices such as the distributed energy resources and the load tap changer(LTC) transformers. It calculates the references of the voltage control devices such that the bus voltages are maintained at as close to the lower operation limit as possible. For this purpose, firstly, the distribution system is divided into LTC transformer control zones through topological search. Secondly, the reactive power references of the reactive power control devices are determined such that the voltage profile of the section is flattened. Finally, the tap references of the LTC transformers are calculated to lower the voltage profile. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is demonstrated through case studies using IEEE test network.

  • In this study, a structure satisfying the fatigue constraint is designed by applying the topology optimization based on the phase field design method. In order to predict life based on the stress value, high cycle fatigue failure theory in which stress acts within the range of elastic limit is discussed and three fatigue theories of modified-Goodman, Smith-Watson-Topper and Gerber theory are applied. To calculate the global maximum stress, a modified P-norm stress correction method is used. As a result, it is possible to obtain topology optimization results that minimize the volume while satisfying the fatigue constraints. By applying the phase field design method, a simple shape with a minimized gray scale was obtained, and the maximum stress value acting on the optimization result became very close to the allowable stress value due to the modified P-norm stress method. While previous studies does not consider the stress correction factor, this study proposes the determination method regarding the stress correction factor considering loading effects related to axial stress components.

  • An artificial neural network (ANN) is successfully presented for prediction acidity constant (pKa) of various benzoic acids and phenols with diverse chemical structures using a nonlinear quantitative structure-property relationship. A three-layered feed forward ANN with back-propagation of error was generated using six molecular descriptors appearing in the multi-parameter linear regression (MLR) model. The polarizability term $(\pi_1)$, most positive charge of acidic hydrogen atom $(q^+)$, molecular weight (MW), most negative charge of the acidic oxygen atom $(q^-)$, the hydrogen-bond accepting ability $(\epsilon_B)$ and partial charge weighted topological electronic (PCWTE) descriptors are inputs and its output is pKa. It was found that properly selected and trained neural network with 205 compounds could fairly represent dependence of the acidity constant on molecular descriptors. For evaluation of the predictive power of the generated ANN, an optimized network was applied for prediction pKa values of 37 compounds in the prediction set, which were not used in the optimization procedure. Squared correlation coefficient $(R^2)$ and root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.9147 and 0.9388 for prediction set by the MLR model should be compared with the values of 0.9939 and 0.2575 by the ANN model. These improvements are due to the fact that acidity constant of benzoic acids and phenols in water shows nonlinear correlations with the molecular descriptors.
