The aim of this study is to develop a semi-analytical method to investigate fluid-structure coupling of concentric double shells with different lengths and elastic behaviours. Co-axial shells constitute a cylindrical circular container and a baffle submerged inside the stored fluid. The container shell is made of functionally graded materials with mechanical properties changing through its thickness continuously. The baffle made of steel is fixed along its top edge and submerged inside fluid such that its lower edge freely moves. The developed approach is verified using a commercial finite element computer code. Although the model is presented for a specific case in the present work, it can be generalized to investigate coupling of shell-plate structures via fluid. It is shown that the coupling between concentric shells occurs only when they vibrate in a same circumferential mode number, n. It is also revealed that the normalized vibration amplitude of the inner shell is about the same as that of the outer shell, for narrower radial gaps. Moreover, the natural frequencies of the fluid-coupled system gradually decrease and converge to the certain values as the gradient index increases.

In this paper, viscous fluid induced nonlinear free vibration and instability analysis of a functionally graded carbon nanotube-reinforced composite (CNTRC) cylindrical shell integrated with two uniformly distributed piezoelectric layers on the top and bottom surfaces of the cylindrical shell are presented. Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) are selected as reinforcement and effective material properties of FG-CNTRC cylindrical shell are assumed to be graded through the thickness direction and are estimated through the rule of mixture. The elastic foundation is modeled by temperature-dependent orthotropic Pasternak medium. Considering coupling of mechanical and electrical fields, Mindlin shell theory and Hamilton's principle, the motion equations are derived. Nonlinear frequency and critical fluid velocity of sandwich structure are calculated based on differential quadrature method (DQM). The effects of different parameters such as distribution type of SWCNTs, volume fractions of SWCNTs, elastic medium and temperature gradient are discussed on the vibration and instability behavior of the sandwich structure. Results indicate that considering elastic foundation increases frequency and critical fluid velocity of system.

In this paper, buckling conditions and retrofitting of cylindrical steel water storage tanks with different roof types and wall thicknesses were investigated by using finite element method. Four roof types of cylindrical steel tanks which are open-top, flat-closed, conical-closed and torispherical-closed and three wall thicknesses of 4, 6 and 8 mm were considered in FE modeling of cylindrical steel tanks. The roof shapes significantly affect load distribution on the tank shell under the seismic action. Composite FRP materials are widely used for winding thin-walled cylindrical steel structures. The retrofitting efficiency of cylindrical steel water tank is tested under the seismic loading with the externally bonded CFRP laminates. In retrofitting of cylindrical steel tank, the CFRP composite material coating method was used to improve of seismic performance of cylindrical steel tanks. ANSYS software was used to analyze the cylindrical steel tanks and maximum equivalent (von-Mises) and directional deformation were obtained. Equivalent (von-Mises) stresses significantly decreased due to the coating of the tank shell with FRP composite material. In thin-walled steel structures, excessive stress causes buckling and deformations. Therefore, retrofitting led to decrease in stress, reductions in directional and buckling deformation of the open-top, flat-closed, conical-closed and torispherical-closed tanks.

It uses a tank to store, purify and feed lube oil in power plants, which is made by steel plate. Several pumps to feed lube oil are installed on the top plate of the oil tank. In this case if pumps on the top plate are removed or added, the dynamic characteristics of the structure will be changed. In this paper, we present that we analyze in detail the similar case with a finite element model for tank & pump structure coupled with oil and that we set plan to change mode shapes on the top plate of the tank.

In the modern design technology, a component should be designed to fit into the overall system performance. A design methodology is developed to expedite the mechan- ical design of complex mechanical systems, The relation between the system design and component design is defined by a top-down approach and the results from the system design are utilized in the component design process. As a design example, an automobile exhaust system is selected for the system design and a bellows is chosen for a component design. Design methodology based on the top-down approach consists of five steps; (1) Analysis of service load, (2) Development of a lumped parameter, (3) Completion of the system design, (4) Selection of the component topology, (5) Completion of the component design, A method using a equivalent matrix is developed in order to determine unknown external forces in linear structural analyses. The bellows is also analyzed by the finite element method using a conical frustum shell element. Various experiments are performed to verify the developed theories. The top-down desi- gn approach is demonstrated by a design case using structural and shape optimization technology. Since the method is relatively simple and easy compared to other methods, it can be applied to the general design where system and component designs are involves simultaneously.
This study describes the spermatogenesis and sperm ultrastructure of the spiny top shell, Batillus cornutus using light and electron microscopy. The spiny top shells were collected by divers in the coastal water of Wandogun, Cheollanamdo, Korea(N $34^{\circ}13'$, E $126^{\circ}47'$) at May 2003. Spiny top shells of $60.0{\sim}69.9\;mm$ in shell height were used in this study. The testis comprises many spermatogenic follicles which contains germ cells in different developmental stages. The primary spermatocytes in the pachytene stage were characterized by synaptonemal complexes. The early spermatids were characterized by appearance of Golgi complex, increased karyoplasmic electron density and tubular mitochondria. In early spermatid the mass of proacrosomal granules consists of numerous heterogeneous granules with high electron density. From the mid-stage of spermiogenesis the well-developed mitochondria aggregate posterior to the nucleus, and surround the proximal and distal centrioles. In this stage, proacrosomal granules are condensed and form a acrosome with thin envelope. During the late spermiogenesis, the acrosome begins to elongate and then became conical. The sperm consists of head, mid-piece and tail. The head comprises a round nucleus and a conical acrosome. Acrosomal rod of microfibrous is observed between nucleus and acrosome. Five mitochondria observed in mid-piece. And tail has the typical "9+2" microtubular system originates from the centrioles.
To improve the environmental management and resources, in this study, we aimed to investigate the effect of adding oyster shell powder to Hanwoo manure on its characteristics and microbial composition during the storage period. Additives were deposited on top of the manure surface at the rate of 0, 0.5, and 1% of oyster shell powder per 200 g of Hanwoo manure in a plastic container with three replicates; however, untreated manure litter served as the control. Manure characteristics (dry matter, organic matter and crude ash) and microbial composition (lactic acid bacteria, yeast, Bacillus subtilis, Salmonella, and E.coli) were evaluated at day 0, 2, 4, and 8. Manure characteristics exhibited an effect on dry matter, organic matter, and crude ash at day 2 and 8 (p<0.05), and not for day 0 and 4 (p>0.05). With the exception of yeast content at day 4 of storage, lactic acid bacteria, yeast, Bacillus subtilis, Salmonella, and E.coli exhibited no significant differences in all conditions during the storage period. Conclusively, addition of 1% oyster shell powder to Hanwoo manure resulted in slightly better manure characteristics; however, its microbial composition remained unchanged.

In the present work, topology optimization method using adaptive inner-front level set method is presented. In the conventional level set based topology optimization method, there exists an incapability for inner-front creation during optimization process. In this regard, as a new attempt to avoid and to overcome the limitation, an inner-front creation algorithm is proposed. In the inner-front creation algorithm, the strain energy density of a structure along with volume constraint is considered. Especially, to facilitate the inner-front creation process during the optimization process, the inner-front creation map which corresponds to the discrete valued function of strain energy density is constructed. In the evolution of the level set function during the optimization process, the least-squares finite element method (LSFEM) is employed. As an application to shell structures, the lightweight design of doubly curved shell and segmented mirror is carried out.
Free vibration analyses of circular cylindrical shells attached with plate structures for the symmetric boundary condition such as simply-simply supported shells by receptance method are found in literatures. However analyses of those shells with unsymmetric boundary condition as clamped free boundary are hardly found. Here frequency equation of the clamped free circular cylindrical shell with end plate is derived using receptance method and natural frequencies of the combined system were calculated. The frequencies and mode shapes obtained from present method are compared with those of ANSYS to show the validity of the method. Natural frequencies and mode component ratios of clamped-free cylindrical shell are obtained by employing Rayleigh-Ritz method on energy equations, and they are used in receptance calculation. Results show good agreement with those of ANSYS analyses.
For enhancement of apple productivity, the calcium fertilizers to increase the calcium content of fruit, and reduce the incidence of bitter pit in apples are applied. Crushed oyster shell contains a plenty of calcium carbonate, and a very small amount of boron, ferrous, and manganese. A field study was conducted to determine the optimum level of crushed oyster shell for soil nutrient management, and its effect on the induction of bitter pit in cultivar 'Gamhong' apple. The application of crushed oyster shell increased organic matter, available phosphate, and exchangeable cation concentration in soil. We found a significant positive correlation between soil pH, and application level of crushed oyster shell in both top, and subsoils. The incidence of bitter pit in apple fruit at the harvest stage was significantly higher in non treatment and calciummagnesium carbonate treatment than on over applications 4 Mg $ha^{-1}$ for crushed oyster shell. However, the optimum level of crushed oyster shell was 2 Mg $ha^{-1}$, especially considering the soil Ca content, soil pH, fruits weight, and yield. Our results show that the crushed oyster shell can be effective in restoring the soil nutrient balance, and inducing the bitter pit in apple fruit.
