Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of the modified plaque score (MPS) for assessing the oral hygiene status of periodontitis patients. Methods: A total of 116 patients were included in this study. After evaluation of the $L{\ddot{o}}e$ and Silness gingival index (GI), Silness and $L{\ddot{o}}e$ plaque index (PlI), O'Leary plaque control record (PCR), and MPS, patients were randomly assigned to either a conventional tooth brushing instruction (C-TBI) group (n=56) or a professional intraoral tooth brushing instruction (P-TBI) group (n=60). The MPS and clinical parameters were re-evaluated after scaling and a series of root planing. The convergent validity of MPS with the PlI and PCR was assessed. The measurement time for MPS and PCR was compared according to the proficiency of the examiner. Results: After root planing, the GI, PlI, PCR, and MPS improved from their respective baseline values in both groups. Three different plaque indices including the MPS, showed significant differences between the C-TBI group and the P-TBI group after root planing. The MPS showed significant concurrence with the PCR and PlI. The mean time for PCR measurement was $2.76{\pm}0.71$ times longer than that for MPS measurement after 2 weeks of training. Conclusions: MPS seems to be a practical plaque scoring system compared with the PlI and PCR. These findings suggest that repetitive plaque control combined with an easily applicable plaque index (MPS) may facilitate more effective oral hygiene education and improved periodontal health.
This study surveyed people with hearing impairments and speech defect living in an area of Gyeonggi-do using a self-administered questionnaire and interviewed them with a deaf interpreter's help during the period from January 21 to February 14, 2009 in order to investigate their oral health management attitude according to their general characteristics. Background: Dental caries in preschool children can cause early loss of teeth, reduced masticatory function, malocclusion, and speech disorders, making oral care for preschool children essential. However, because children have a poor ability to perform oral hygiene by themselves, educational tools that help establish correct oral health behaviors are required. This study evaluated the effect of toothbrushing application for kids on dental plaque removal and toothbrushing interest in preschool children. Methods: Seven 5-year-old children enrolled in a daycare center participated in the evaluation, and the same children participated in the experiment twice a week. The Pokémon Smile application (App) was used as an auxiliary application for tooth brushing, and the degree of dental plaque removal on the tooth surface was evaluated by quantitative light-induced fluorescence-digital imaging. After the experiment, children's toothbrushing preferences were investigated through interviews. Results: The levels of AREA R30 and AREA R70 measured after the children's toothbrushing as usual decreased compared to those before toothbrushing; however, the change was not significant. The levels of AREA R30 and AREA R70 measured after using the Pokémon Smile App were significantly reduced compared to those before toothbrushing. Children's interest in brushing their teeth increased by 28.59% after using the Pokémon Smile App. Conclusion: The toothbrushing application for kids effectively removes dental plaque by helping preschool children brush their teeth. It also increased preschool children's interest in tooth brushing. Therefore, an oral health education application would be useful for children who need to develop correct oral care methods and habits.

This study was conducted to reveal the relationship between the oral health status and their Knowledges about the oral health of the freshman of colleges in Taegu city. The evaluation for the oral health status through the oral examinations and their analysis of their knowledges on the periodontal disease were done on 216 males and 205 females from 1st to 30th April, 1993. The obtained results were as follows: The oral health status of 421 subject showed that 35.7% was good, 59.1% fair, and 6.2% poor, respectively. In case of the oral health status of females, 41.9% was good and 4.4% poor, and then in males 27.8% was good, 7.8% poor. The oral health status of the females was better than that of the males(p=0.006). The 52.1% among the good oral health status group answered that the dental plaque is the bacterial membrane causing dental disease, and the 23.1% among the poor oral health status group answered same as the above. The 91.8% among the good oral health status group answered that the periodontal diseases can be prevented, and the same answer came out from 15.4% of the poor group. It was found that the better oral health status group had the better knowledges about periodontal disease(p=0.001). For the question about their experiences in scaling the 30.1% of good oral health status group and the 23.1% of poor group answered that scaling is very helpful to periodontal health(p=0.001). About the experience of the education for tooth brushing, the 53.2% of good oral health status group and the 7.6% of poor group had the experiences to receive the education for tooth brushing(p=0.001). About the frequency and the time of tooth brushing, the 53.4% of good oral health status group brushed their teeth more then 3 times a day and 41.8% of good group brushed their teeth after every meal(p=0.001). The result of multiple regression analysis according to the simplified oral health index indicated that the variable having an effect on the oral health status was the tooth brushing frequency, knowledge of periodontal disease prevention, experience in education of tooth brushing and time of tooth brushing(p=0.001).
In 2011, South Korea's Ministry of Health and Welfare started a national tooth brushing room program without a pilot project. This study aimed to assess the effect of the implementation of this program in Gangneung, Korea. One-year outcomes of oral health behavior and self-reported oral symptoms in the study group after installation of the tooth brushing room were evaluated and compared with those of the control group using chi-square test. The prevalence rate of good self-rated oral health in grade 1-3 students increased from 35.7% immediately after installation to 48.9% after 6 months (p=0.031) compared to 37.3% in the control group (p=0.051). Immediately after installation of the tooth brushing room, 53.5% of grade 1-3 students in the study group brushed their teeth every day, but after 6 months, only 35.5% of students brushed daily (p<0.001) compared to 28.6% in the control group (p=0.007). The prevalence rate of bad breath in grade 1-3 students was 26.2% for the study group immediately after installation compared to 25.5% in the control group (p=0.065), but it declined 16.5% after 6 months (p=0.055). The prevalence rate of bad breath in grade 4~6 students was 14.7% for the study group after 6 months compared to 25.3% in the control group (p=0.016). We recommend the creation of a healthy school environment through a school-based tooth brushing program under the active supervision of classroom teachers and the continuous monitoring of program processes in order to promote children's oral health.

Objectives: This study was conducted to examine the effectiveness in oral health promotion through oral health education for freshmen students of the dental hygiene department. Methods: To verify its effectiveness, research was conducted on 74 freshmen of the dental hygiene department by the evaluation of DMFT index, PHP index, and Cariview test (2015-2016). Results: The analysis of the test results using Cariview equipment shows a categorization of low risk group consisting of 10 students (13.5%), middle risk group consisting of 47 students (63.5%), and a high risk group consisting of 17 students (22.9%). DT index according to the number of daily tooth brushing by <2 is DT index average score higher and in such a case, statistics are considered meaningful (p<0.01). Oral health state at DMFT index of low risk group according to Cariview risk group for an analysis is lower than both the middle risk group and the high risk group (p<0.001). Conclusions: A review of the effect of the promotion of oral health through oral health education on the behavior change rather than of Cariview test and value of dental plaque through tooth brushing method was conducted.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of diabetes on periodontal disease according to oral health behavior. The date from the 2013-2015 Korean National Health and Nutrition Survey were used, and 14,282 subjects were included in the analysis. Periodontal disease was assessed using the Community Periodontal Index and using logistic regression. When all of the oral health behaviors were included in the model, tooth brushing frequency, flossing, and interdental brushing were significantly associated with periodontal disease, and periodontal disease risk was significantly higher with diabetes, but there was little difference in periodontal disease risk by input factors. Oral health behaviors were associated with periodontal disease in the normal blood glucose group but not in the presence of diabetes mellitus. If there is diabetes, it is difficult to manage periodontal disease by only the health behavior, so it is necessary to control blood sugar.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the stability of external stain that long term attrition caused by tooth brushing affected the color variation of external stain of IPS e.max Press Porcelain. The specimen was made by IPS e.max Press LT ingots, and treated the shade of external staning as Orange, A, B, C, D After conducting horizontal toothbrush strokes about 11,000 / 22,000 / 44,000 / 66,000 / 88,000, Color changers of the external stained layer was measured with SpectroShade$^{tm}$ MICRO(MHT, Italy). The result of this study was obtained as follows: 1. After 11,000 strokes, the color changes of shade were greater in Orange shade than the other 4 shade groups. And even though toothbrush strokes were increased until 88,000, there were no statistical significant color changes about the external stain shade variation. 2. The amount of color variation about increasing of toothbrushing strokes was irregular(no consistent increasing, or decreasing), and it was no statistical significant changes According to these results, the long term tooth-brushing doesn't affect the changes of external stain about IPS e.max press porcelain. And it doesn't reduce the stability of external stain clinically. Later, it will be needed to study other factors affecting the external stain.
