A Study on the Optimal Parameter Selection of a Power System Stabilizer for HVDC Linked System (HVDC 연계 시스템의 전력계통 안정화 장치의 적정 파라메터 선정에 관한 연구)

  • Power system stabilizer act efficiently to damp the electromechanical oscillations in interconnected power systems. This paper presents an algorithm for the optimal parameter selection of a power system stabilizer in two-area power systems with a series HVDC link. This method is one of the classical techniques by allocating properly pole-zero positions to fit as closely as desired the ideal phase lead between the voltage reference and the generator electrical power and by changing the gain to produce a necessary damping torque over the matched frequency range. The small signal stability and transient stability studies using the PSS parameters obtained from this method show that a natural oscillation frequency of the study case system is adequately damped. The simulation used in the paper was performed by the Power System Toolbox software program based on MATLAB.

Mouse phenogenomics, toolbox for functional annotation of human genome

  • Mouse models are crucial for the functional annotation of human genome. Gene modification techniques including gene targeting and gene trap in mouse have provided powerful tools in the form of genetically engineered mice (GEM) for understanding the molecular pathogenesis of human diseases. Several international consortium and programs are under way to deliver mutations in every gene in mouse genome. The information from studying these GEM can be shared through international collaboration. However, there are many limitations in utility because not all human genes are knocked out in mouse and they are not yet phenotypically characterized by standardized ways which is required for sharing and evaluating data from GEM. The recent improvement in mouse genetics has now moved the bottleneck in mouse functional genomics from the production of GEM to the systematic mouse phenotype analysis of GEM. Enhanced, reproducible and comprehensive mouse phenotype analysis has thus emerged as a prerequisite for effectively engaging the phenotyping bottleneck. In this review, current information on systematic mouse phenotype analysis and an issue-oriented perspective will be provided.

  • Despite the fact that much has been published about Six Sigma in the business and academic press and on the Internet in recent years, there is still confusion among many people, particularly those who work in the transactional and service environments, about the nature of Six Sigma. It is true that Six Sigma like other process improvement programs before was first applied to manufacturing processes; however, many corporations including General Electric and Sony have successfully applied Six Sigma to their transactional and service processes as well. Six Sigma is used by many companies not only to improve the quality of their products and services but also to achieve quantifiable financial results, improve management style and communication, and achieve customer and employee satisfaction. Whether in manufacturing or non-manufacturing environments, the application of Six Sigma differs from organization to organization. Although there are many common elements between these applications, however, special care must be taken when customizing Six Sigma to suit the organizations' needs. In this paper, the author provides some practical and useful guidelines for Six Sigma deployment. This paper is not about the use of numerous statistical tools and techniques that can be found in a typical Six Sigma toolbox. The main emphasis has been placed both on the concept and the implementation of Six Sigma, particularly within the non-manufacturing areas of business.

  • Composites are somewhat more difficult to model than an isotropic material such as iron or steel due to the fact that each layer may have different orthotropic material properties. In finite element literature the asphalt mixes are represented by using rectangular meshes, not the actual picture of their cross-sections. Asphalt aggregate size and distribution in the asphalt concrete sample, aggregate shape, and fractured surface effects are ignored. In this research, the actual image of the sample including all these effects were directly considered in the finite element. The samples, were cut into cross-sections and were scanned. The image-processing toolbox of Labview was utilized in obtaining the rectangular gray images of the scanned images. In the rectangular sample the aggregates were white and the asphalt binders were black. The grayscale images were converted by LABVIEW into the format required by ANSYS as an input file, with the same dimensions. The nodes at the bottom of the model were constrained in both x and y directions. Left and right edges were symmetry and top was free. Certain amount of pressure was applied along the top surface to simulate the tire pressure.

This paper presents an algorithm for the optimal parameter selection of a power system stabilizer in two-area power systems with a series HVDC link. This method is one of the classical techniques by allocating properly pole-zero positions to fit as closely as desired the ideal phase lead between the voltage reference and the generator electrical power and by changing the gain to produce a necessary damping torque over the matched frequency range. Control of HVDC converter and inverter are used a constant current loop. Proper parameters of PI controllers are obtain based on the Root-locus technique in other to have sufficient speed and stability margin to cope with charging reference values and disturbance. The small signal stability arid transient stability studies using the PSS parameters obtained from this method show that a natural oscillation frequency of the studycase system is adequately damped. Also the simulation results using the HVDC converter and inverter parameters obtained from this proposed method show proper current control characteristics. The simulation used in the paper was performed by the Power System Toolbox software program based on MATLAB.

Performance Test of Asynchronous Process of OGC WPS 2.0: A Case Study for Geo-based Image Processing

  • Geo-based application services linked with the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) Web Processing Service (WPS) protocol have been regarded as an important standardized framework for of digital earth building in the web environments. The WPS protocol provides interface standards for analysis functionalities within geo-spatial processing in web-based service systems. Despite its significance, there is few performance tests of WPS applications. The main motivation in this study is to perform the comparative performance test on WPS standards. Test system, which was composed of WPS servers, WPS framework, data management module, geo-based data processing module and client-sided system, was implemented by fully open source stack. In this system, two kinds of geo-based image processing functions such as cloud detection and gradient magnitude computation were applied. The performance test of different server environments of non-WPS, synchronous WPS 1.0 and asynchronous WPS 2.0 was carried out using 100 threads and 400 threads corresponds client users on a web-based application service. As the result, at 100 threads, performance of three environments was within an adjacent range in the average response time to complete the processing of each thread. At 400 threads, the application case of WPS 2.0 showed the distinguished characteristics for higher performance in the response time than the small threads cases. It is thought that WPS 2.0 contributes to settlement of without performance problems such as time delay or thread accumulation.

Impact of Fixed Series Capacitors and SSSC on the LOE Protection of Synchronous Generator

  • Loss of excitation (LOE) relay is prevalently used to protect synchronous generator. The widely used method for synchronous generator LOE protection is a negative offset mho relay with two zones. The basis of this relay is identical to mho impedance relay. In other words, this relay calculates impedance by measuring voltage and current at the generator terminal. On the other hand, the presence of series compensation, changes measured voltage and current signals during loss of excitation. This paper reveals that the presence of series compensators such as fixed series capacitors (FSCs) and static synchronous series compensator (SSSC) causes a significant delay on the performance of generator LOE relay. It is also shown that the presence of SSSC causes the LOE relay to be under-reached. Different operating modes of the power system, the SSSC and also different percentages of series capacitive compensations have been considered in the modeling. All the detailed simulations are carried out in the MATLAB/Simulink environment using the SimPowerSystems toolbox.

  • We investigated the temperature uniformity in an anode-supported solid oxide fuel cell, using the open source computational fluid dynamics (CFD) toolbox, OpenFOAM. Numerical simulation was performed in three different flow paths, i.e., co-flow, counter-flow, and cross-flow paths. Gas flow in a porous electrode was calculated using effective diffusivity while considering the effect of interconnect rib. A lumped internal resistance model derived from a semi-empirical correlation was implemented for the calculation of electrochemical reaction. The result showed that the counter-flow path displayed the most uniform temperature distribution.

  • The light-weight design of UTM (Urban Transit Maglev)-02 car-body frames are performed, based on initial configuration. The thicknesses of fourteen sub-structures are defined as design variables and the loading condition is considered according to weight of sub-structures, electronic and pneumatic modules and passengers. For efficient and robust process of design optimization, objective function and constraints are approximated by response surface approximation. Structural analysis is performed at some sampling points to construct the approximated objective function and constraints composed of design variables. Design space is changed to find many optimal candidates and best optimal design can be found eventually. The Matlab Optimization Toolbox is used to find optimal value and sensitivity analysis about each design variable is also performed.

  • The design and implementation of an engine control system has become an important area in developing a new car, but the implementation of an engine control system is becoming a tedious and time-consuming work as the level of complexity increases. In order to shorten the development cycle of the control system, rapid control prototyping (RCP) technique deserves developers' attention. A new RCP platform has been developed for an automotive engine control application. This prototyping system strictly adheres to the layered architecture of the final production ECU, and separates the automatically generated part of software, or the application area, from the hand coded area, which generally carefully designed and tested because of the hardware dependency and the efficiency of microcontroller. The $Matlab{\circledR}$ tool-chain of Mathworks Inc. has been selected as a base environment in this study. A newly developed Engine Control Toolbox of Real-Time $Workshop{\circledR}$ converts a graphically represented control algorithm into optimized application codes and links them with other parts of the software to generate executable code for the target processor.
