In this paper, a model-based stick-slip compensation for the micro-positioning is proposed using an enhanced stick-slip model based on statistical rough surface contact model. The smart structure is comprised with PZT(lead (Pb) zirconia(Zr) Titanate(Ti)) based stack actuator incorporating with the PID(proportional-integral-derivative) control algorithm, mechanical displacement amplifier and positioning devices. For the stick-slip compensation, the elastic-plastic static friction model is used considering the elastic-plastic asperity contact in the rough surfaces statistically. Mathematical model of system for the positioning apparatus was derived from the dynamic behaviors of structural parts. PID feedback control algorithms with the developed stick-slip model as well as feedforward friction compensator are formulated for achieving the accurate positioning performance. Experimental results are provided to show the performances of friction control using the developed positioning apparatus.

This paper presents the feasibility of using electromechanical impedance based active sensing technique for nondestructive strength gain monitoring of early-age concrete by employing piezoelectric lead-zirconate-titanate (PZT) patches on concrete surface. The strength development of early age concrete is actively monitored by performing a series of experiments on concrete specimens under moist curing condition. The electrical admittance signatures are acquired for five different curing ages and compared with each other. The resonant frequency shifts of PZT patches with increasing days is observed which is on account of additional stiffening due to strength gain of concrete during curing and level of stiffening being related to strength obtained from compression tests on companion cylinder specimens. The proposed approach is found to be suitable for monitoring the development of compressive strength in early-age concrete. It is also observed in this study that root mean square deviation (RMSD) in admittance signatures of the PZT patches can also be used as an indicator of concrete strength development.
Lead zirconate titanate (PZT) thick films with a thickness of $10-20{\mu}m$ were fabricated on silicone substrates using an aerosol deposition method. The starting powder, which had diameters of $1-2{\mu}m$, was observed using SEM. The average diameter ($d_{50}$) was $1.1{\mu}m$. An XRD analysis showed a typical perovskite structure, a mixture of the tetragonal phase and rhombohedral phase. The as-deposited film with nano-sized grains had a fairly dense microstructure without any cracks. The deposited film showed a mixture of an amorphous phase and a very fine crystalline phase by diffraction pattern analysis using TEM. The as-deposited films on silicon were annealed at a temperature of $700^{\circ}C$. A 20-${\mu}m$ thick PZT film was torn out as a result of the high compressive stress between the PZT film and substrate.
This work employed density functional theory to investigate the structural and ferroelectric properties of the Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) phase of lead titanate, $Pb_2TiO_4$, as well as its phase transitions with epitaxial strain. A wealth of novel structural instabilities, which are absent in the host $PbTiO_3$ material, were identified in the RP phase through phonon soft-mode analysis. Our calculations showed that the ground state of $Pb_2TiO_4$ is antiferroelectric, distinct from the dominant ferroelectric phase in the corresponding host material. In addition, applied epitaxial strain was found to play a key role in the interactions among the instabilities. The induction of a sequence of antiferroelectric and antiferrodistortive (AFD) phase transitions by epitaxial strain was demonstrated, in which the ferroic instability and AFD distortion were cooperative rather than competitive, as is the case in the host $PbTiO_3$. The RP phase in conjunction with strain engineering thus represents a new approach to creating ferroic orders and modifying the interplay among structural instabilities in the same constituent materials, enabling us to tailor the functionality of perovskite oxides for novel device applications.
Lead zirconate titanate (PZT) thin fills were deposited onto the Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si substrate by the pulsed laser deposition with the second harmonic wavelength (532 nm) of Nd:YAG laser. In order to determine the optimum conditions for the film deposition, the phase of the films were investigated as functions of ambient oxygen pressure, substrate temperature, and laser fluence. Also the chemical composition analysis was conducted for the PZT films deposited under various ambient oxygen pressure. When the distance between substrate and bulk PZT target is set to 20 mm, the optimum conditions have been determined to be 3 torr of oxygen pressure, 1.5 J/cm2 of laser fluence, and 823-848(±10) K range of substrate temperature. At these conditions, perovskite phase PZT films were obtained on platinized silicon. The chemical composition of the films is very similar to that of PZT bulk target. The physical structure of the deposited films analyzed by scanning electron microscopy shows a columnar morphology perpendicular to the substrate surface. Capacitance-Voltage hysteresis loop measurements show also a typical characteristics of ferroelectric thin film. The dielectric constant is found to be 528 for the 0.48 μm thickness of PZT thin film.
Gelation time, gel structure and volatility of by-products during gelation of PZT sol-gel processing were investigated by FT-IR spectroscopy. FT-IR spectroscopic study was performed on PZT gels with the various H₂O contents (1, 2 and 3 mol) and the several types (HNO₃, NH₄OH) and amounts (0.1, 0.2 mol) of catalysts, monitoring temporal (0, 1, 3, 10 weeks, 3 months and 3 years) and thermal (100-700 ℃) changes of FT-IR spectra. The interpretation of temporal change of the spectra revealed two trends. One is under the condition of 1 mol H₂O, 1 mol H₂O+0.1 mol HNO₃, 3 mol H₂O and the other is for 1 mol H₂O+0.1 mol NH₄OH, 2 mol H₂O, 1 mol H₂O+0.2 mol HNO₃. The gel structures and the gelation times for these conditions were discussed in comparison with the reported results of SiO₂, and we suggested the reaction mechanisms for these structural characteristics. Thermal variation of FT-IR spectra was interpreted as the evolution processes of gel by investigating the evaporation of solvent and the decomposition of organic residues.
In this paper lead zirconate titanate transducers (PZT) are employed for damage detection of four reinforced concrete (RC) column specimens retrofitted with carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) jackets. A major disadvantage of FRP jacketing in RC members is the inability to inspect visually if the concrete substrate is damaged and in such case to estimate the extent of damage. The parameter measured during uniaxial compression tests at random times for known strain values is the real part of the complex number of the Electromechanical Admittance (Conductance) of the sensors, obtained by a PXI platform. The transducers are placed in specific positions along the height of the columns for detecting the damage in different positions and carrying out conclusions for the variation of the Conductance in relation to the position the failure occurred. The quantification of the damage at the concrete substrate is achieved with the use of the root-mean-square-deviation (RMSD) index, which is evaluated for the corresponding strain values. The experimental results provide evidence that PZT transducers are sensitive to damage detection from an early stage of the experiment and that the use of PZT sensors for monitoring and detecting the damage of FRP-retrofitted reinforced concrete members, by using the Electromechanical Admittance (EMA) approach, can be a highly promising method.

We explain optical and electrical properties of top and bottom-emission structured alternating-current powder electroluminescent devices (ACPELDs) with Ga-doped ZnO(GZO) transparent electrode. The top-emission ACPELDs were layered as the metal electrode/dielectric layer/emission layer/top transparent electrode and the bottom-emission ACPELDs were structured as the bottom transparent electrode/emission layer/dielectric layer/metal electrode. The yellow-emitting ZnS:Mn, Cu phosphor and the barium titanate dielectric layers were layered through the screen printing method. The GZO transparent electrode was deposited by the sputtering, its sheet resistivity is $275{\Omega}/{\Box}$. The transparency at the yellow EL peak was 98 % for GZO. Regardless of EL structures, EL spectra of ACPELDs were exponentially increased with increasing voltages and they were linearly increased with increasing frequencies. It suggests that the EL mechanism was attributed to the impact ionization by charges injected from the interface between emitting phosphor layer and the transparent electrode. The top-emission structure obtained higher EL intensity than the bottom-structure. In addition, charge densities for sinusoidal applied voltages were measured through Sawyer-Tower method.
Process of the hydroxyapatite (HA) formation on bioactive titanium metal prepared by NaOH treatment in a modified-simulated body fluid (mSBF) containing bovine serum albumin (BSA) was investigated by high resolution transmission electron microscope attached with energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDX). The amorphous titanate, which was formed on titanium surface by NaOH treatment, combined with the calcium ions in the liquid to form an amorphous calcium titanite. With increasing of soaking time in the liquid, an amorphous calcium titanite combined with the phosphate ions to form an amorphous calcium phosphate with low Ca/P atomic ratio, and it grows as aggregates of plate (or needle)-like substance on titanium surface. The crystalline apatite layers, which are needle-shaped with the c axis parallel to the long axis, are formed in an amorphous calcium phosphate with further increase in soaking time. The formation of needle-shaped apatite layers can be explained by electrostatic effects and difference of concentration between calcium, phosphate, and albumin ions.
The flame-retardant (FR) treatments of wool fibers using Hexafluorozirconate/titanate salts and tetrabromophthalic anhydride can cause skin irritation and gas toxicity due to Zr and Br compounds respectively. A water-soluble polyfunctional cyclophosphazene derivative, synthesized through substitution reaction of Hexachloro cyclophosphazene and N-[3-(Dimethylamino)propyl] metacrylamide, was applied as a durable flame-retardant for wool fabrics. Also, a crosslinked structure was introduced to improve washing durability of the FR-wool, up to 10 laundering cycles, using Acrylamide(AAm) and Triacryloylhexahydrotriazine (TAHT) as a comonomer and a crosslinker respectively. The mole ratios of the TAHT and AAm concentrations compared to the Dichloro tetrakis{N-[3-(Dimethylamino)propyl]methacrylamido} cyclcophosphazene (DCTDCP) were optimized to 1.33 and 7.5 respectively. In addition, the pyrolysis and combustion properties of the FR wool were assessed using LOI, TGA and microcalorimetry suggesting a solid-phase FR mechanism.
