Shear Properties of Waste Tire-Bottom Ash Mixture with Different Particle Size of Waste Tire (폐타이어 입경에 따른 폐타이어-저회 혼합토의 전단특성)

  • This paper investigates the shear properties of waste tire-bottom ash mixture with various particle size of waste tire powder. Test specimens were prepared at 5 different percentages of waste tire powder content (i.e., 0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, 100% by weight of the dry bottom ash), and with three different particle sizes of waste tire powder (i.e., 0.1 mm~2.0 mm, 0.9 mm~5 mm and 2 mm~10 mm). In this study several series of direct shear tests were carried out. The experimental results indicate that the mechanical characteristics of waste tire-bottom ash mixture are strongly influenced by the particle size as well as waste tire powder content. It is shown that the shear strength and internal friction angle of waste tire-bottom ash mixture decrease with an increase in waste tire powder content. However, the shear strength and internal friction angle of the mixture increase due to interlocking effect between waste tire powder and bottom ash as the particle size of waste tire powder increases.

  • The 10t/d pyrolysis demonstration plant have been developed for waste tire recycling treatment and value added commercialization. The initial plant model had been started under 2.4t/d capacity with continuous operation, and the commercial plant has been achieved to the 120t/d based on demonstration plant having the tube reactor with chain conveyer attached disk. The next generation pyrolysis plant for waste tire is reviewed and the assignment for plant development is presented briefly.

Shear and CBR Characteristics of Dredge Soil-Bottom Ash-Waste Tire Powder-Mixed Lightweight Soil (준설토-저회-폐타이어 혼합경량토의 전단 및 CBR 특성)

  • This study investigated the shear and CBR characteristics of dredge soil-bottom ash-waste tire powder-mixed lightweight soil, which was developed to recycle dredged soil, bottom ash, and waste tire powder. Test specimens were prepared with various contents of waste tire powder ranging from 0 to 100% at 50% intervals by the weight of the dry dredged soil. Several series of triaxial compression tests and CBR tests were conducted. The shear strength characteristics of the lightweight soil were compared using two different shear tests (triaxial compression test and direct shear test). The experimental results indicated that the internal friction angle of the lightweight soil obtained by the direct shear tests was greater than that by the triaxial shear tests. However, the cohesion value obtained by the triaxial shear tests was greater than that by the direct shear tests. The CBR value of the lightweight soil decreased from 35% to 15% as waste tire powder content increased.

  • There are about 41% (by weight) of scrap tires were pulverized to produce rubber powder and granules in the tire recycling industry of Taiwan. However, the reuse of the by-products, steel and fiber, of the scrap tires still needs to be improved. It is difficult to remove the remaining rubber on the surface of steel or fiber. This problem reduce the availability for further reuse of steel and fiber. In addition to the improvement of magnetic, gravity separation techniques or carbonization process, using cryogenic shredding process to separate rubber and fiber (or steel) had been used as another alternative. Cryogenic shredding process for scrap tires showed many advantages, the objective of this paper is to explore the mechanisms for the cryogenic shredding process of scrap tires. Cryo-SEM is used to investigate the topographic information, in-situ, from room temperature to -195$^{\circ}C$ . One square inch shredded tire chips are prepared for SEM study. The percentage of the shrinkage of rubber is also estimated, ca. 6.7%. Mechanisms of cryogenic shredding effects on the tire chips are discussed. The proper practice of cryogenic shredding process far scrap tires is also suggested.

  • It was investigated whether the scrap tire can be recycled as a construction material for controlling the frost heave of the ground. Some frost heave tests and a frost penetration depth test in the laboratory were performed on the weathered granite soil mitred with variable amount of scrap tire powder under the atmospheric temperature at -$17^{\circ}$ to find the basic effects of the scrap tire on the control of frost. The frost heave control layer of the crushed stone mixed with scrap tire chips directly below thin subbass in the bituminous pavement was found to be effective for practical use. And the equation for the required thickness of this frost heave control layer with freezing index was suggested.

  • Recycling of waste tire has been limited and very simple, few applications have been observed. This study introduces a new elastic and permeable pavement made of scrap tire. Experimental results showed that key factors affecting the compressive strength were the size of scrap tire, size of aggregate, amounts and property of binder. Also, the water permeability depended on the size of aggregate and scrap tire. The compressive strength and water permeability of the samples were 1.4 and 116 times higher than those of the conventional porous cement concrete, respectively.

  • The recycling technology of carbon residue produced from the process of oil recovery in waste tire pyrolysis is significant in environmental and economical aspects. This study was done to figure out the recycling possibility of carbon residue to activated carbon. For this, the characteristics of the carbon residue obtained from the commercial pyrolysis process of waste tire were studied. Also, the variation of pore structure of carbon residue was studied after 1 hour of carbonization at $600^{\circ}C$ and $800^{\circ}C$ and 3 hours of activation at $950^{\circ}C$. The specific surface area of the carbon residue was $8.0m^2/g$ and it increased to $548.3m^2/g$ after carbonization and activation.

  • This study aimed at developing high-efficiency RDF(refuse derived fuels) fuel in order to use RDF energy rationally and to recycle industrial product. As most studies in this area are concentrated in large combustion apparatuses such as kilns, but this study was focused on the small-sized heating systems, applying them directly to grate type boiler which has a heating capacity of $66{\sim}132m^2$. The different kinds of fuel are experimented including RDF. Coke and Waste Tire. First, for this, we experimented and analyzed RDF to see the change in its mass and heating value. Also, four kinds of exhaust gas are sampled by gas analyzer including CO, $CO_2$, NO and $NO_2$ at different temperature. As a result, the levels of CO concentration of RDF are higher than these of coke and waste tire. But, the levels of NO, $CO_2$ and $SO_2$ concentration of RDF and coke were lower then the levels when waste tire is burned.
