  • A fictitious crack model was used to analyze fatigue crack growth under the influence of residual stress. In the fictitious crack model, crack is represented in terms of the separation of two adjacent interfaces and the constitutive equation between the separation and traction is assumed. The effect of fatigue loading was included in the constitutive equation by considering damage accumulation in the cohesive zone. To investigate the effect of the residual stress on the fatigue crack growth, we calculated the residual stress distribution due to transient heat flux to the specimen by finite element method. Fatigue crack growth was simulated by the fictitious crack model with repeated loading. The mode-I crack growth rates were compared for the cases with and without the compressive residual stress around the crack tip. It was observed that the mode-I crack growth can be suppressed by compressive residual stress.

  • Mode I stress intensity factor $(K_I)$ of Notched Ring Test(NRT) specimen for measuring slow crack growth resistance was found using finite-element method. The theoretical $K_I$ value of NRT was not available in any references and could not be solved analytically. At first, in order to verify the accuracy of the finite-element approach, published $K_I$ values of several cracks were calculated and compared with finite-element results. The results were in good agreement within inherent errors of theoretical $K_I$. Finally the mode I stress intensity factor of NRT was found using 2- and 3-dimensional finite-element methods and expressed as a function of the applied load. This enabled direct comparison of resistance to slow crack growth between NRT and Notched Pipe Test(NPT), which employ different loading regime.

  • In this work, we investigate the growth behavior of silicon oxide nanowires via a solid-liquid-solid process. Silicon oxide nanowires were synthesized at $1000^{\circ}C$ in an Ar and $H_2$ mixed gas. A pre-oxidized silicon wafer and a nickel film are used as the substrate and catalyst, respectively. We propose two distinctive growth modes for the silicon oxide nanowires that both act as a unique solid-liquid-solid growth process. We named the two growth mechanisms "grounded-growth" and "branched-growth" modes to characterize their unique solid-liquid-solid growth behavior. The two growth modes were classified by the generation site of the nanowires. The grounded-growth mode in which the grown nanowires are generated from the substrate and the branchedgrowth mode where the nanowires are grown from the side of the previously grown nanowires or at the metal catalyst drop attached at the tip of the nanowire stem.

  • For investigating the effect of the pre-existing joints on the initiation pattern of hydraulic fractures, the numerical simulation of circular holes under internal hydraulic pressure with a different pattern of the joint distributions are conducted by using a finite element code, FRANC2D. The pattern of hydraulic fracturing initiation are scrutinized with changing the values of the joint length, joint offset angle. The hydraulic pressures with 70% of the peak value of borehole wall breakout pressure are applied at the similar models. The simulation results suggest that the opening-mode fracture initiated from the joint tip and propagated toward the borehole for critical values of ligament angle and joint offset angle. At these critical values, the crack grow length is influenced by joint ligament length. When the ligament length is less than 3 times the borehole diameter the crack growth length increases monotonically with increasing joint length. The opening-mode fracture disappears at the joint tip as the ligament length increases.

  • In this paper, A circular arc crackered plate in biaxially stretched sheets was investigated in the boundary element method. The applications of fracture mechanics have traditionally concentrated on crack problems under an mode I, straight crack. However, many service failures occur from growth of cracks subjected to mixed mode loadings. A rectangular plate with arc crack or slanted central crack, under biaxial tensile loading, was treated analytically and also solved numerically. The Results from BEM applying different loading conditions, crack length (a/W), arc angle($\alpha$) are presented and discussed. The stress intensity factors are evaluated by the techniques of the J-integral. The decomposition method, used to decouple the stress intensity factors in mixed mode problems, is implemented by a considering a small circular contour path around each crack tip. The BIE method was successfully applied to a circular arc crackerd plate problem, also slanted centre cracked plate under mixed mode.

  • We apply the Finite Fracture Mechanics criterion to address the problem of a V-notched structure subjected to mode II loading, i.e., we provide a way to determine the direction and the load at which a crack propagates from the notch tip and express the critical conditions in terms of the generalized stress intensity factor. Weight functions for V-notch emanated cracks available in the literature allow us to implement the fracture criterion proposed in an almost completely analytical manner: the determination of the critical load and the direction of crack growth is reduced to a stationary point problem. A comparison with experimental data presented in the Literature concludes the paper.

  • Recently, the structural failures due to fatigue occur frequently with the increase of size of ships and offshore structures. In this respect, the assessment of fatigue life and the residual strength are very important. Currently, the smart materials technology has demonstrated a variety of possibilities for a diagnosis of structural strength and structural health condition for large structures. The benefits and feature of the MFC sensor are more flexible, durable and reliable than conventional smart material. In this study, Micro Fiber Composite (MFC) sensor for the measurement of stress intensity factor (SIF) of two dimensional cracks induced in a structure is developed. Two MFC sensors are placed in the vicinity of the crack tip close to each other with the crack tip in between them. The SIFs of Mode I($K_I$) as well as of Mode II($K_{II}$) based on the piezoelectric constitutive law and fracture mechanics are calculated. In this study, the SIF values measured by MFC sensors are compared with the theoretical results and measured value.

  • The objective of this work is to develop the capability to analyze accurately the mixed-mode propagation of a crack in composite structures with elastic orthotropic material stiffness properties and anisotropic material strength characteristics. In order to develop the capability to fully analyze fracture growth and failure in anisotropic structures, we examined the fundamental problem of mixed mode fracture by carrying out the analysis on orthotropic materials with an inclined crack subject to biaxial loading. Our goal here is to include an additional term in the asymptotic expansion of the crack tip stress field and to show that the direction of crack initiation can be significantly affected by that term. We employ the normal stress ratio theory to predict the direction of crack extension. It is shown that the angle of crack extension can be altered by horizontal loads and the use of second order term in the series expansion is important f3r the accurate determination of crack growth direction.

  • Composite patch repair of cracked aircraft structures has been accepted as one of improving fatigue life and attaining better structural integrity. Analysis for the stress intensity factor at the skin/stiffener structure with inclined central crack repaired by composite stiffened panels are developed. A numerical investigation was conducted to characterize the fracture behavior and crack growth behavior. In order to investigate the crack growth direction, maximum tangential stress(MTS) criteria is used. The main objective of this research is the validation of the inclined crack patching design. In this paper, the reduction of stress intensity factors at the crack-tip and prediction of crack growth direction are determined to evaluate the effects of various non-dimensional design parameter including; composite patch thickness and stiffener distance. The research on cracked structure subjected to mixed mode loading is accomplished and it is evident that more work using different approaches is necessary.
