  • Soil foundations exhibit significant creeping deformation, which may result in excessive settlement and failure of superstructures. Based on the theory of viscoelasticity and fractional calculus, a fractional Kelvin-Voigt model is proposed to account for the time-dependent behavior of soil foundation under vertical line load. Analytical solution of settlements in the foundation was derived using Laplace transforms. The influence of the model parameters on the time-dependent settlement is studied through a parametric study. Results indicate that the settlement-time relationship can be accurately captured by varying values of the fractional order of differential operator and the coefficient of viscosity. In comparison with the classical Kelvin-Voigt model, the fractional model can provide a more accurate prediction of long-term settlements of soil foundation. The determination of influential distance also affects the calculation of settlements.

  • One of the possible alternatives of simulation-based time-dependent reliability assessment of pre-stressed biconcave and biconvex cable trusses, the Monte Carlo method, is applied in this paper. The influence of an excessive deflection of cable truss (caused by creep of cables and rheologic changes) on its time-dependent serviceability is investigated. Attention is given to the definition of the basic random variables and their statistical functions (basic, mutually dependent random variables such as the pre-stressing forces of the bottom and top cable, structural geometry, the Young's modulus of elasticity of the cables, and the independent variables, such as permanent load, wind, snow and thermal actions). Then, the determination of the response of the cable truss to the loading effects, and the definition of the limiting values considering serviceability of the structure are performed. The potential of the method, using direct Monte Carlo technique for simulation-based time-dependent reliability assessment as a powerful tool, is emphasized. Results obtained by the First order reliability method (FORM) are compared with those obtained by the Monte Carlo simulation technique.

  • The goal of this paper is to investigate dynamic responses of simply-supported laminated micro beams under moving load. In the considered micro-scale problem, the modified coupled stress theory which includes the length scale parameter is used. The governing equations of problem are derived by using the Lagrange procedure. In the solution of the problem the Ritz method is used and algebraic polynomials are used with the trivial functions for the Ritz method. In the solution of the moving load problem, the Newmark average acceleration method is used in the time history. In the numerical examples, the effects of stacking sequence of laminas, fibre orientation angles and the length scale parameter on the dynamic responses of laminated micro beams are examined and discussed.

  • In this study, a numerical method for the material nonlinear analysis of reinforced concrete shell structures including the time dependent effects due to creep and shrinkage is developed. Degenerate shell elements with the layered approach are used. The perfect or strain hardening plasticity model in compression and the linearly elastic model in tension until cracking for concrete are employed. The reinforcing bars are considered as a steel layer of equivalent thickness. Each :steel layer has an uniaxial behaviour resisting only the axial force in the bar direction. A bilinear idealization is adopted to model elasto-plastic stress-strain relationships. For the nonlinear anaysis, incremental load method combined with unbalanced load iterations for each load increment is used. To include time dependent effects of concrete, time domain is divided into several time steps which may have different length. Some numerical examples are presented to study the validity and applicability of the present method. The results are compared with experimental and numerical results obtained by other investigator.

  • Various aspects of structural optimization techniques under transient loads are extensively reviewed. The main themes of the paper are treatment of time dependent constraints, calculation of design sensitivity, and approximation. Each subject is reviewed with the corresponding papers that have been published since 1970s. The treatment of time dependent constraints in both the direct method and the transformation method is discussed. Two ways of calculating design sensitivity of a structure under transient loads are discussed - direct differentiation method and adjoint variable method. The approximation concept mainly focuses on re- sponse surface method in crashworthiness and local approximation with the intermediate variable Especially, as an approximated optimization technique, Equivalent Static Load method which takes advantage of the well-established static response optimization technique is introduced. And as an application area of dynamic response optimization technique, the structural optimization in flexible multibody dynamic systems is re- viewed in the viewpoint of the above three themes

  • In the construction of flat plate slabs, which are widely used for tall buildings but have relatively low flexural stiffness, serviceability problems such as excessive deflections and cracks are of great concern. To prevent excessive deflections at service load levels, current design codes require the minimum slab thickness, but the requirement could be unconservative because it is independent on loading and elastic modulus of concrete, both of which have significant effects on slab deflections. In the present study, to investigate the effects of the construction load of shored slabs, reduced flexural stiffness and moment distribution of early-age slabs, and creep and shrinkage of concrete on immediate and time-dependent deflections, numerical analysis was performed using the previously developed numerical models. A parametric study was performed for various design and construction conditions of practical ranges, and a new minimum permissible thickness of flat plate slabs was proposed satisfying the serviceability requirement for deflection. The proposed minimum slab thickness was compared with current design code provisions and numerical analysis results, and it agreed well with the numerical analysis results.

  • Measurement techniques for the in-duct source characteristics of fluid machines can be classified into direct method and load method, according to whether the technique employs an external acoustic source or not. It has been known that the two methods yield different results and the load method used to come up with a negative source resistance, in spite of the fact that a very accurate prediction of radiated noise can be obtained by using any result. This paper is focused to the effect of time-varying nature of fluid machines on the output result. For this purpose, a simplified fluid machine consisting of a reservoir, a valve and a pipe is considered as representing a typical linear, periodic, time-varying system and the measurement techniques are simulated by utilizing the Hill equation and its steady-state forced response. In the load method, the source impedance turns out being dependent on the valve impedance at the calculation frequency and the valve and load impedances at other frequencies as well.

  • In designing the prestressed concrete box-bridge, the dead load, prestressing force, creep and shrinkage of concrete are the main factors which influence the camber and deflection of segmental concrete structure under construction. Among these factors the creep and shrinkage are the functions of the time-dependent property which, therefore, must be considered with time. The prediction model for estimating creep and shrinkage of concrete has been suggested by ACI, CEB/FIP, JSCE and KSCE design code and EMM, AEMM, RCM, IDM and SSM has been suggested for analytical method in consideration of the time-dependent characteristics. In this study, the creep test was carried out for four curing ages of concrete which were applied to the prestressed concrete structure at a construction site, and the results of test were compared to the values of creep prediction by the design code. Also the creep test of step-wise incremental stresses were performed and were compared to analytical methods.

  • In the present paper, the overall state of the arts of ice mechanics which is the most typical research topic of the artic engineering field was studied. And also, ice loads genrated by ice-structure interaction were estimated using numerical approach. The effects of viscous property of ice sheets to the ice load were investigated. The time dependent deformation behaviors of ice was modeled by visco-plastic problem using the finite element formalism. Constitutive model representing the material properties of ice was idealized by comblned rheological model with Maxwell and Voigt models. Numerical calculations for the bending and crushing behavior of ice sheet which are the most typical interaction modes between ice sheets and structures were carried out. The time dependent viscous behaviors of ice sheets interaction forces acting on structures were analyzed and the results were studied in detail.

  • This paper discusses a method for the determination of frequency control reserve requirement with consideration of the interaction between ex-ante planning and real-time balancing. In proposed method, we consider the fact that the delivered energy for tertiary control reserve is determined based on required capacity for secondary control reserve and the expected amount of load errors. Uncertain load errors are derived by Brownian motion, an optimization method is suggested using a stochastic programming. In a short, we propose an interactive dependent method for determining secondary control reserve requirement based on the principle that it satisfies to minimize the total cost. As a result, this paper provides will analyze for an example model to demonstrate the capabilities of the method.
