  • In today's design trend of vehicle structure, crush zone is fiequently reinforced by adding a box-shaped sub-frame in order to avoid an excessive deformation against a high-speed offset barrier such as EU Directive 96/97 EC, IIHS offset test. That kind of vehicle structure design results in a relatively monotonic crash pulse for airbag ECU(Electronic Control Unit) located at non-crush zone. As for an angular crash event, the measured crash signal using a single-axis accelerometer in a longitudinal direction is usually weaker than that of frontal barrier crash. Therefore, it is not so easy task to achieve a satisfactory crash discrimination performance for offset and angular crash events. In this paper, we introduce a new crash discrimination algorithm using an electronic X-Y 2-axis accelerometer in order to improve crash discrimination performance especially for those crash events. The proposed method uses a crash signal in lateral direction(Y-axis) as well as in longitudinal direction(X-axis). A crash severity measure obtained from Y-axis acceleration is used to improve the discrimination between fire and no-fire events. The result obtained by the proposed measure is logically ORed with an existing algorithm block using X-axis crash signal. Simulation and pulse injection test have been conducted to verify the performance of proposed algorithm by using real crash data of a 2,000cc passenger vehicle.

  • This paper describes liquidity evaluation on the horizontal branch pipe connected to a food waste disposer and performance of five disposers marketed. Experimental apparatus for analyzing the five disposers has been introduced to measure vibration, sound level and power consumption of the disposers. Simulator for analyzing the required water velocity to avoid waste jam inside the pipe connected to a food waste disposer has been designed and constructed. The simulator can control some experimental parameters: pipe slope, disposer supply water quantity, food waste materials and operation time of a disposer. Throughout the experimental measurements of the disposers marketed, it is found that the time need to crash food waste is about 20 seconds on the average. At the same flow condition, increase rate of internal water velocity is accelerated as the pipe slope increases. The water velocity inside the pipe having 50 A and slope of 1/50 is 0.26 m/s when the water flowrate to supply the disposer is 16 l pm. Considering the specific gravity and adhesion property of food waste, water velocity of the horizontal branch pipe connected to a food waste disposer need to excess 0.26 m/s at least to avoid the waste blockage inside the pipe.

  • In the vehicle communication system, transferred information is needed to be detected as possible as fast in order to inform car status located in front and rear side. Through the moving vehicle information, we can avoid the crash caused by sudden break of front one or acquire to real time traffic data to check the detour road. To be connecting the wireless communication between the vehicles, fast timing synchronization can be a key factor. Finding out the sync point fast is able to have more marginal time to compensate the distorted signals caused by channel variance. Thus, we introduce the combination method which helps find out the start of frame quickly. It is executed by auto-correlation and cross-correlation simultaneously using only short preambles. With taking the absolute value at the implemented synch block output, the proposed method shows much better system performance to us.

  • Recent advanced sensors and communication technologies have been widely applied to advanced safety vehicle (ASV) for reducing traffic accident and injury severity. To apply the advanced safety vehicle technologies, it is important to quantify the safety benefits, which is a fundamental for justifying application. This study proposed a methodology for quantifying the effectiveness of the advanced driver assistant system (ADAS), and applied the methodology to lane departure warning system (LDWS) and automatic emergency braking system (AEBS) which are typical advanced driver assistant systems. When the proposed methodology is applied to 2008-2010 gyeonggi-province crash data, LDWS would reduce about 10~14% of relevant crashes such as head-on, run-off-the road, rollover and fixed-object collisions on the road. In addition, AEBS could potentially prevent about 50% of total rear-end crashes. The outcomes of this study support decision making for developing not only vehicular technology but also relevant safety policies.

  • Furnishing traffic safety information can contribute to providing hazard warnings to drivers, thereby avoiding crashes. A smart road lighting platform that instantly recognizes road conditions using various sensors and provides appropriate traffic safety information has therefore been developed. This study analyzes the short-term traffic safety improvement effects of the smart road lighting's tunnel traffic safety information service using surrogate safety measures (SSM). Individual driving behavior was investigated by applying the vehicle trajectory data collected with RADAR in the Anin Avalanche 1 and 2 tunnel sections in Gangneung. Comparing accumulated speeding, speed variation, time-to-collision, and deceleration rate to avoid the crash before and after providing traffic safety information, all SSMs showed significant improvement, indicating that the tunnel traffic safety information service is beneficial in improving traffic safety. Analyzing potential crash risk in the subdivided tunnel and access road sections revealed that providing traffic safety information reduced the probability of traffic accidents in most segments. The results of this study will be valuable for analyzing the short-term quantitative effects of traffic safety information services.

  • To enhance the reliability of programs, developers use fuzzing tools in test processes to identify vulnerabilities so that they can be fixed ahead of time. In this case, the developers consider the security-related vulnerabilities to be the most critical ones that should be urgently fixed to avoid possible exploitation by attackers. However, developers without much experience of analysis of vulnerabilities usually rely on tools to pick out the security-related crashes from the normal crashes. In this paper, we suggest a static analysis-based tool to help developers to make their programs more reliable by identifying security-related crashes among them. This paper includes experimental results, and compares them to the results from MSEC !exploitable for the same sets of crashes.

  • Power lines are one of the main obstacles causing an aircraft crash and thus their realtime detection is significantly important during flight. To avoid such flight obstacles, the use of LIDAR has been recently increasing thanks to its advantages that it is less sensitive to weather conditions and can operate in day and night. In this study, we suggest a fast method to detect power lines from LIDAR data for flight obstacle avoidance. The proposed method first extracts non-ground points by eliminating the points reflected from ground surfaces using a filtering process. Second, we calculate the eigenvalues for the covariance matrix from the coordinates of the generated non-ground points and obtain the ratio of eigenvalues. Based on the ratio of eigenvalues, we can classify the points on a linear structure. Finally, among them, we select the points forming horizontally long straight as power-line points. To verify the algorithm, we used both real and simulated data as the input data. From the experimental results, it is shown that the average detection rate and time are 80% and 0.2 second, respectively. If we would improve the method based on the experiment results from the various flight scenario, it will be effectively utilized for a flight obstacle avoidance system.
