  • This paper presents a procedure for the time-scale separation and a design method for the sub-optimal composite regulator and Kalman filter of the large-scale discrete stochastic system with two time-scale properties. Provided that the fast sub-system is asymptotically stable, the reduced-order regulator and Kalman filter for the slow sub-system with dominant modes is designed as a sub-optimal regulator for the system.

  • In this paper, a variable time-scale modification using SOLA is proposed, which takes into consideration the different time-scaled characteristics of voiced and unvoiced speech. The conventional method performs time-scale modifiction at a uniform rate for all speech. For this purpose, voiced and unvoiced speech duration at various taling speeds were statistically analyzed. A clipping autocorrelation functio was applied to each analysis frame to detemine voiced and unvoiced speech to obtain respective variation rates. The results were used to perform variable time-scale modification to evaluate performance, a MOS test was conducted to compare the proposed voiced/unvoiced variable time-scale modification and the uniform SOLA method. Results indicate that the proposed method produces sentence quality superior to that of the conventional method.

  • We propose the Optimum Power Allocation (OPA) scheme for Distributed Antenna Systems(DAS) in the time-varying Rayleigh fading channel. Recently, the OPA schemes which uses the Channel State Information (CSI) including a small scale (fast) fading have been proposed. However, the channel is changing vary fast over time due to small scale fading, therefore Bit Error Rate (BER) increases. Because of this reason, we derive the OPA for minimizing BER in DAS, which only uses a large scale fading to CSI and excepts a small scale fading. The simulation results show that the proposed OPA achieves better BER performance than conventional OPA considering a small scale fading in time-varying Rayleigh fading channel, and also has similar performance in Rayleigh flat-fading environment. The BER performance of proposed OPA which derived in Rayleigh fading channel is similar to minimum BER of Ricean fading channel which has small Line-of-Sight (LOS).

  • Numerical data of the geological time scale in Earth Science I, II textbooks and those of University textbooks of Korea and other countries are briefly reviewed. Numerical data of the geologic time scale shown in Earth Science I, II textbooks are mostly out of date and many of them follow those in the University textbooks of Korea. The same situation is apparent for introductory Earth Science or Geology textbooks of other countries as old data exist in their text books as well. There are many new data in the International Stratigraphic Chart (ISC 2000) and International Geologic Time Scale (IGTS 2003) recently updated by International Commission on Stratigraphy (ICS) and A Geologic Time Scale (GTS 2004). Among the new data, some important things are Paleogene and Neogene Periods of Cenozoic Era, Mississippian and Pensilvanian Epochs of Carborniferous Period, Paleoproterozoic, Mesoproterozoic, and Neoproterozoic Eras of Proterozoic Eon, and Eoarchean, Paleoarchean, Mesoarchean, and Neoarchean Eras of Archean Eon. These new data should be used in the new Earth Science textbooks.

  • In the present study, a new computational closure model is proposed in order to contain physical models in the k- and .epsilon.- equations. The time scale of the third-order diffusive transport of turbulent kinetic energy in a curved streamline flow field is assumed as a function of a velocity time scale and a curvature time scale, the latter being derived from the analogy between buoyancy and streamline curvature effects on turbulence. The curvature time scale is represented by a combination of Brunt-Vaisala frequency of the curvature instability and the velocity time scale. Besides the modification of diffusive transport time scale, the destruction term in the dissipation rate equation is modeled to incorporate the streamline curvature effect on the dissipation rate of turbulent kinetic energy as a function of the ratio between velocity time scale and curvature time scale. The new curvature dependent 2-equation model is found to yield very good prediction accuracy for the various turbulent recirculating flows. Particurarly, the recovery of the mean velocity profile in the redeveloping region after the reattachment is correctly simulated by the present model.

  • Mobile devices such as smartphones are very attractive targets for augmented reality (AR) services, but their limited resources make it difficult to increase the number of objects to be recognized. When the recognition process is scaled to a large number of objects, it typically requires significant computation time and memory. Therefore, most large-scale mobile AR systems rely on a server to outsource recognition process to a high-performance PC, but this limits the scenarios available in the AR services. As a part of realizing large-scale standalone mobile AR, this paper presents a solution to the problem of accuracy, memory, and speed for large-scale object recognition. To this end, we design our own basic feature and realize spatial locality, selective feature extraction, rough pose estimation, and selective feature matching. Experiments are performed to verify the appropriateness of the proposed method for realizing large-scale standalone mobile AR in terms of efficiency and accuracy.

  • The hierarchical approach method is proposed to sperate each different time scale sub-systems from linear time invariant multi-parameter singular perturbation systems. By means of this proposal, the original multi-parameter singular perturbation systems is completely separated into independent subsystems with each different time scale. It is also investigated that the controllability of the system is invariant. And this paper applies singular perturbation methods to the minimum control effort problem for linear time invariant systems with constrained controls. Also near-optimum control theory, which is based on dividing the total time interval with the time scales respectively, is proposed. As a result, the time scale separation method is show to be particularly useful in a near optimum design which can be otained through a decentralized control structure.

  • We consider a delayed predator prey model. The local stability and Hopf bifurcation results are stated taking the time delay as a control parameter. We apply multiple scale analysis to analyze the effects of additive white noises near the Hopf bifurcation point at the positive interior equilibrium state. The governing equations for the amplitude of oscillations on a slow time scale are derived. We identify the process of amplitude of oscillations and derive its transient properties. We show that oscillations, which would decay in the deterministic system whenever time delay lies below its critical value, persists for long time under the validity of multiple scale analysis.

  • A decentralised computational procedure is proposed for the optimal feedback gain matrix of large-scale discrete-time systems with time-delays. The constant feedback gain matrix is computed from the optimal state and input trajectries obtained hierarchically by the interaction prediction method. All the calculation in this approach are done off-line. The resulting gains are optimal for all the initial conditions. The interaction prediction method is applied to time-delay large-scale systems with general structures by extending the dimensions of coupling matices. A numerical exampie illustrates the algorithm.

  • In large-scale systems, we frequently encounter the time-delay and the uncertainty, and these should be considered in the design of controller because these are the source of the degradation of the system performance and instability of system. In this paper, we consider the robust stability of the linear large scale systems with the uncertainties and the time-delays. The considered uncertainties are both structured uncertainty and the unstructured uncertainty. Also, the considered time-delays are time-varying having finite time derivative limits. Based on the Lyapunov theorem and the linear matrix inequality(LMI) technique, we present two sufficient conditions that guarantee the robust stability of the system. The conditions are expressed as the LMI forms which can be easily checked their feasibility by using the well-known LMI control toolbox. Finally, we show by two examples that our results are less conservative than the previous results.
