In this study, an elasto-plastic finite element code, ESFORM, was developed to analyze sheet stamping processes. A formulation of 4-node degenerated shell element was implemented in the code. Workpiece materials were assumed to have planar anisotropy, and governed by associated flow rule. Explicit time integration method was employed to save computation time and reduce the required computer memory. Penalty method was used to describe interface behavior between workpiece and rigid die. Deep drawing of square cup and front finder stamping processes were simulated by ESFORM>

The AutoForm previously used the membrane element and it accomplished sheet metal forming analysis. The membrane analysis has been widely applied to various sheet metal forming processes because of its time effectiveness. However, it is well-known that the membrane analysis can not provide correct information for the processes which have considerable bending effects. In this research experimental results were compared with the analysis results obtained by using the shell element which is applied newly in the AutoForm commercial software. The shell element is a compromise element between continuum element and membrane element. The Finite element method by using shell element is the most efficient numerical method. From this research, it is known that FEA by using shell element can predict accurately the problems happened in actual experimental auto-body panel.
This is a leading study to replace the structural analysis methodology on the specific traditional joint by a numerical analysis. Tests were carried out to test the compressive methodologies with the numerical results. The Japanese larch was used as a sample. The Orthotropic property of wood was specifically considered for the finite element numerical analysis. Linear numerical analysis and non-linear numerical analysis for the BEAM element and the two SOLID elements of ANSYS were used to analyze the compressive performance. In addition, more finely divided elements were used to raise the accuracy of the numerical result. Finally, the statistically significant differences were tested between that of the analytical and numerical results. It could be concluded that the SOLID 64 element shows the most optimum result when the non-linear analysis with the more finely divided element was used. However, finely dividing of the element is a considerable time consuming process, and it is quite difficult to raise the accuracy of the non-linear numerical analysis. Therefore, if considering the vertical displacement to be of the only interest, the BEAM element is more efficient than the SOLID element because the BEAM element is reflected as a simple line, which is less time consuming and difficult in dividing the elements. But, the BEAM element cannot accurately model the knot as a strength defect factor which is an important property in the orthotropic property of wood. Therefore, the SOLID element should be used to model the strength defect factor, knot, as it can be efficiently applied on the structural size flexure member which could be more strongly effected by the knot. In addition, it is useful at times when the failure types of members are to be more closely investigated, as the SOLID element is able to examine the local stress distribution of the member. The conclusion drawn by this study is of the good concordance between analytical results and numerical results of compressive wood members, but how orthotropic properties should only be considered. The numerical analysis on the specific Korean traditional joints will be based on the current study results.

This paper is intended as an investigation of study on the thermal and electrical characteristics of the carbon heating element. In this experimentation, the electric material used is the crystalline graphite a kind of natural graphite. The bentonite is used to solidify the heating element and the vacuum furnace is used for sintering it. It is noted that the natural drying time should be at least 58 hours. The plating of the electric pole with the electroless nickel showed the lowest contact resistance among others. The resistance shows linear variation with regard to length. For the insulation and resolution, the glaze coating is best with 80% of water content. The temperature rising characteristic of the heating element is better than sheath heater saving 43% of rising time. The correlation equation for temperature was obtained with the electric power.

An inverse finite element approach is employed for more capability to design the optimum blank shape from the desired final shape with small amount of computation time and effort. For multi-stage deep-drawing processes, numerical analysis is extremely difficult to carry out due to its complexities and convergence problem as well as tremendous computation time. In this paper, multi-stage finite element inverse analysis is applied to multi-stage rectangular cup drawing processes to calculate intermediate blank shapes and strain distributions in each stages. Deformation history of the previous stage is considered in the computation. Finite element patches are used to describe arbitrary intermediate sliding constraint surfaces.

Long-term performance of the enthalpy exchange element is a topic of current interest due to the concern of possible performance degradation over time. In this study, a 350 CMH enthalpy recovery ventilator equipped with an enthalpy exchange element was installed in an office room, and the performance has been traced over the past 5 years. The appearance, overall dimension, thermal performance, leakage ratio and anti-bacterial performance were checked annually. Results showed that the change in thermal performance (sensible, latent and enthalpy efficiency) was negligible with periodic cleaning with an air gun. However, the leakage ratio increased with time, measuring 7.3% after 5 years. Anti-bacterial test revealed that no bacteria were found during the test period. The largest change in the dimension occurred at the middle location of the element, although the change was less than 2% of the initial value.

A finite element based on the efficient higher order zig-zag theory with multiple delaminations Is developed to refine the predictions of frequency and mode shapes. Displacement field through the thickness are constructed by superimposing linear zig-zag field to the smooth globally cubic varying field. The layer-dependent degrees of freedom of displacement fields are expressed in terms of reference primary degrees of freedom by applying interface continuity conditions including delaminated interfaces as well as free hounding surface conditions of transverse shear stresses. Thus the proposed theory is not only accurate but also efficient. This displacement field can systematically handle the number, shape, size, and locations of delaminations. Throught the dynamic version of variational approach, the dynamic equilibrium equations and variationally consistent boundary conditions are obtained. Through the natural frequency analysis and time response analysis of composite plate with multiple delaminations, the accuracy and efficiency of the present finite element are demonstrated. The present finite element is suitable in the predictions of the dynamic response of the thick composite plate with multiple delaminations.

In the process of finite element analysis, mesh generation is tedious job which consumes tremendous time. Therefore, the automation of well shaped mesh generation from the minimal boundary input data is desirable to improve reliability and accuracy of the analysis and also to reduce the process time of the entire design process. The automation of triangular mesh generation has been relatively well treated due to its robustness and ease of handling when compared to rectangular element mesh generation. In this study, the offset method developed previously for generating plane rectangular element mesh has been corrected and modified to generate triangular element mesh on the B-spline surface having arbitrary holes. The result shows that the generated triangular mesh has the average aspect ratio over 0.9. The designed arbitrary surface shape has been interactively constructed by non-uniform B-spline theory for triangular mesh generation.
This paper presents a newly implemented parallel finite element procedure for contact-impact problems. Three sub-algorithms are includes in the proposed parallel contact-impact procedure, such as a parallel Belytschko-Lin-Tsay (BLT) shell element generation, a parallel explicit time integration scheme, and a parallel contact search algorithm based on the master slave slide-line algorithm. The underlying focus of the algorithms is on its effectiveness and efficiency for inclusion in future finite element systems on parallel computers. Throughout this research, a prototype code, named GT-PARADYN, is developed on the IBM SP2, a distributed-memory computer. Some numerical examples are provided to demonstrate the timing results of the procedure, discussing the accuracy and efficiency of the code.
